Recommended: The issue of global poverty

As we sit in our homes, watching images of bone-thin children half way across the world materialize on the television screen, we feel sad for the children but we are more relieved that this plague is not here. Though poverty is spreading globally, as programs, organizations, and people band together in an effort to combat this growing virus.
The poverty rate in America was at a stable fifteen percent during the 2011-2012 year. Though based on an official recording, poverty today is much higher than before. This fact may seem depressing, and suggests that people who pay tax are wasting millions of dollars a year attempting to fight a losing war on poverty. According to Representative Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin, we spent “$15 trillion fighting poverty,” though currently we have “the highest poverty rates in a generation, 15 percent of Americans in poverty.” There is no doubt that it may seem as if our valiant effort was for nothing, though poverty itself is a strong and persistent foe that has been strongly combated and oppressed over the years.

In the end, most will end up in unskilled labor jobs that can barely support their families. Yet many reforms made to help people living in poverty are based “off of outdated statistics” (Henslin, 2014, p.276) and are not enough to help the lower class maintain a sufficient standard of living. Poverty relates to conflict theory since the poor are struggling just to get by. Government programs such as Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), housing assistance, and food stamps provided by the government are not enough to help the poor gain social mobility.
