As a kind man, Jerry works with little kids. He had never looked up at someone with so much respect, until he met Pony. He brought the kids to a picnic at a church, and a fire started burning down the building. The children had been trapped inside until three boys, Pony, Dally, and Johnny rescued the kids. With a huge heart, Jerry accompanied the boys to the hospital after they were hurt when rescuing the kids. He could not believe that the boys risked their lives to save those of the kids. When Ponyboy confides his personal issues to Jerry, Jerry judges them on their heroic actions, and not their appearances. Dark and gloomy, this side of the road does not look the most attractive.
