Parenting is single handedly the ultimate test of endurance, both emotionally and physically. Although someday I will look back and believe that parenting will have also been rewarding, currently it is like standing in the middle of a hurricane, the goal is to survive and not drown in the flood waters that surround you. Life right now feels like a category 5 Hurricane and I cannot wait for the storm to pass. Per usual, Shakespeare formulated the words perfectly to summarize parenting in a nutshell, “I would that were no age between 10 and 23, or that youth would sleep out the rest, for there is nothing in between but getting wenches with child, wronging the ancientry, stealing and fighting” (McCarthy and Hutz 63).

Thankfully, a P.E. teacher payed attention, she noticed her arm had marks on it and referred her to the school counselor who then contacted me. My eyes nearly popped out of my head and I was completely dumbstruck when I looked at her arm and counted 19 self-inflicted cuts. Guilt, anger, fear, disbelief and the unknown of what actions to take to help her are all feelings that came rushing to the surface at once. Guilt due to the fact that I enrolled in college, guilt for the reason that I’m not as active in her school activities, guilt in that I am now a single mother. I was angry. Anger was a very strong emotion that I dealt with as I considered her choices to be ridiculous. My daughter made a conscious choice to scar her body up for what appeared to be senseless reasons. As my emotions played out on a spectrum I became furious for not seeing the signs that were there and letting her hurt herself. Disbelief comes from not thinking that anything this horrible could be happening to my child and for it to be self-inflicted was beyond the pale. Uncertainty stemmed from not being able to trust her, …show more content…
Doyle, Treacy and Sheridan performed a study which found that the strongest correlation between self-harm and adolescent females were fighting with parents, followed by worries over their sexual orientation. In addition, peer relations, having friends or family members who self-harm and being bullied also were strong factors (Doyle et al. 2015). McCarthy and Hutz concluded that all forms of self-harm were, in fact, misdirected aggression, or aggression directed inward (77). In other words, their feelings of being angry with someone else or disappointed in their performance at school, the youth turns their anger inward, and cutting becomes a way to control the
It takes an immense amount of courage and strength to raise a child, and that is something that must be taught and earned.
When Amy Chua, a professor at Yale, wrote her personal memoir in 2011 called Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, controversy arose regarding the topic of an extreme parenting type called a “Tiger Mom” (Tiger Mom). When The Wall Street Journal posted an excerpt from Chua’s book on their website, it received over 7,000 comments both positive and negative including death threats (Extreme Parenting). In her book, Chua describes is forcing her 7-year old daughter to stay up all night without bathroom or drink breaks until she was able to play a certain piano piece (Extreme Parenting). Her daughter rebels, drops violin, and takes up tennis (Luscombe). Extreme parents exert great pressure on their child to meet expectations, and if they are not met, the child may be punished (Hatter). The MacMillan Dictionary defines a tiger mom as “a very strict mother who makes her children work particularly hard and restricts their free time so they continually achieve the highest grades,” (Tiger Mother).
Why do people hurt themselves? In a journal article from the American Journal of Psychotherapy, Louise Ruberman notes that about 2.1 million teens suffer from nonsuicidal self-injury, or NSSI. Young women between the ages of 14 and 18 years old take part in NSSI due to poor development of the relationship with their mothers, childhood abuse, and psychiatric disorders. Although there are multiple ways of causing injury to oneself, cutting of the skin as a means of self-mutilation is said to be the most common (Ruberman 119). We will start out by examining the problems that occur during the relationship development between a mother and a daughter at a young age.
Parenting styles refer to a set of different manners in which parents raise their children. There are four parenting styles including authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved parenting. The authoritarian parenting style is based on the implementation of rules, and on the idea that all rules should be followed without exceptions. Similarly, authoritative parenting style implements rules, but the child feelings are taken in consideration and reasonable exceptions to the rule are allowed. On the other hand, in permissive parenting style, there is implementation of rules, but they are rarely encouraged to be followed. Lastly, in uninvolved parenting style, there is a lack of engagement between parents and children, and there are
expensive for working class parents. For parents that are working below the average household income, it would be tougher to pay for full time childcare if the money they are earning is not able to all go to that expense. Unfortunately, not all states in the U.S. provide services that assist families with paying for child care costs. These services are more common in urban areas where there is a higher percentage of low income families.
First, when it comes to paying child support, some men are lazy and try to find reasons or excuses to get out of paying what they owe. Child support is a payment that a noncustodial parent makes as a contribution to the costs of raising a child. Failure to receive such payment has a great impact on the well-being of the child. The U.S. Department of Human Services has reported that since 1975, the total child support arrears have accumulated to more than $114.5 billion. This result is because the nonresident fathers are not paying their child support payments.
Some ways of self harm are pinching, cutting, starving, carving, scratching, pulling, and hitting oneself (young minds). Most people that don’t really understand say that it is from attention but to be honest teens self harm to take the pain from their hearts. Some teens may self harm because it is something they have control over (young minds). Some teens self harm to make sense of the pain that is happing in their lives (self harm).
Self-harm is a growing and troubling trend. It's a frightening disorder, most common among women, where hurt and alienation are expressed by injuring oneself. There are several kinds of self-harm. Self-mutilation and various eating disorders are among the most common forms of self-destruction. These forms of self-harm often lead to suicide. There are three types of self-mutilation. The rarest and most extreme form is Major self-mutilation. This form usually results in permanent disfigurement, such as castration or limb amputation. Another form is Stereo-typical self-mutilation. This usually consists of head banging, eyeball pressing, and biting. The third and most common form is Superficial self-mutilation. This involves cutting, burning, hair pulling, bone breaking, hitting, interference with wound healing, and basically anything that causes harm to oneself. It's almost unimaginable that one would inflict injury upon oneself. However, cutting, burning, slashing, stabbing, and bruising occurs while apparently no physical pain is felt. As many as three million Americans are believed to be suffering from this psychiatric disorder. (Simpson) The very nature of this problem is shrouded in secrecy. It is no surprise that it has taken some time for people to get wise to this growing problem. There are several different theories as to why one engages in such behavior. One popular theory is that it's a control issue. There are also several reasons for a need for control. For instance, when children are abused, they are in a situation of no control. Their abusers can hurt them at anytime, and the children are largely powerless to stop it.
The percent of people self-harming themselves in the world is increasing tremendously. Research provided by “Dr. Paul Moran of King’s College London, Institute of Psychiatry and George C. Patton, professor at the Center for Adolescent Health at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute in Melbourne, Australia” (Willingham), found out of 1,802 adolescents, eight percent of the adolescents were cutting, ten percent were girls, and 6 percent were boys. Age 15 to 24 year old girls are the ones that are most likely injuring themselves. In Dr. Moran and Dr. Patton’s studies they found “teens who experienced depression or anxiety were about six times more likely to self-harm in young adulthood than adolescents who did not suffer from these illnesses” (Willingham), leading to the doctors results of the percentage data.
According to the article “Rather than confirming the home as a haven from the heartless world, this study has revealed the heartlessness of the system in which mothers and nannies are caught,” the researcher wants people to know, instead of that the child becoming a well respectful adult in society, there is a possibility that the child will experience some trouble in becoming that person in his/her later life, because of the constant conflict between mothers and nannies; puppeteer is the main reason for these conflict.
Some say that the teenage years are one of the most challenging and trying times in an individual’s life. Many changes take place, both emotionally and physically, which sometimes can give the feeling of excitement… or in other cases… complete confusion and utter turmoil. Because emotions tend to run high during this period of life due to hormones, some teens resort to an unhealthy way of coping to deal with their emotional pain. This unhealthy way of dealing with emotional pain is also known as self injury. Self injury (or self harm) is widely known to take place during the teenage years up until the early years of adulthood (ages 14-24)when judgments become more defined, criticism becomes harsher, and limits are tested. The transition from childhood to adulthood may sound exciting and adventurous to some, but to others, it’s a nightmare they wish they could wake up from.
Is it fair to have to take a course and pass a test to become a parent?
Child abuse refers to lack of care or any type of emotional, physical or sexual mistreatment that results in emotional damage or physical injury to a child or a youth. In most countries, children are considered to be anyone below 18 years of age. Child abuse can occur directly by harming a child or indirectly by failing to prevent the child from any form of harm or injury. Child abuse can occur either in the family set up, in the community set up or in an institution such as a school. Also, children can be abused by adults or by other children or by people who know them or people who are complete strangers to them.
Parents object to strict parenting while others praised such parenting style. I was raised in a strict household. I grew up in a family of 10 siblings’ and authority was the only way for my parents to have all of us under control. I always thought it was the worst way to live and hated every minute of it. I felt guilty when I had to explain to friends why I couldn’t hang out with them or stay over at their house. Now, as an adult I fully understand why my parents were hard on us and treated us the way they did. Although, authoritarian parenting style has some rewarding outcomes it has some drawbacks as well. For instance, I owe my academic success to the fact that I had my parents checking up on me and making sure I stayed out of trouble, even
Single Parent Struggle For many years, children growing up in a single parent family have been viewed as different. Being raised by only one parent seems impossible to many yet over the decades it has become more prevalent. In today’s society many children have grown up to become emotionally stable and successful whether they had one or two parents to show them the rocky path that life bestows upon all human beings. The problem lies in the difference of children raised by single parents versus children raised by both a mother and a father.
