On December 7, 1941 the Japanese launched a surprise attack on the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This attacked brought the United States into World War II in both the Pacific and European theaters. On December 8, 1941 Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war on Japan. Because of the United States going at war with Japan the American citizens living on the West Coast of America racially targeted the Japanese immigrants and Japanese Americans for fear of them being Imperial Japanese spies, even though there were no accounts of espionage. On February 19, 1942 President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which allowed the Secretary of War to create military areas to help fight against sabotage and espionage. Internment of thousands of Japanese Americans started on February 19, 1942 and were not allowed to return home until the end of the war. Some families were not allowed to leave until the last camp closed which happened March 20, 1946. These internment camps, while still tamed in comparison to Jewish camps in Nazi Germany, is a disgusting and disgraceful piece of U.S. history. Not many schools and teachers cover this part of World War II. Japanese American internment should be taught to show more of the evil side of United States history. “Finally getting out of the camps was a great day.
