Ice Skating. No typically something that Dan Howell was good at. But there was just something about the cold air nipping at your fingertips or the constant chill at your spine- that's the way Tumblr described it anyway. Dan just wanted to experience that for himself. Sort-of. His fans really wanted him to experience that. Dan; not so much. He didn't really think it could be that hard, I mean it's just walking on ice, right? Should be easy. - Dan pushed open the door, the handle felt cool on his warm hands. He reluctantly walked through the door, feet dragging behind him. He was greeted by perky girl with bleach blonde hair, she looked as if she couldn't possibly be older than twenty. "Hi-ya! Names' Charlotte! How may I help you?" She
When I think of what it means to be Canadian, one of the first things that come to mind is hockey. This is true for many Canadian’s as hockey was and is an integral piece of the formation of the national identity. However, when people think of playing hockey their attention usually turns to the men in the National Hockey League or other top men’s leagues and tournaments. Even so, Canada has come a long way from its beginnings, when women were not even considered persons under the law until 1929. While it has taken many decades for women to receive more recognition in the world of sport, today shows great improvements from the past. A key reason that women are not treated the same way as men in regards to hockey is due to how the game began;
People can brake a bone walking down the street, hockey is not any different. In youth
By universal definition, "sport" is listed as "an activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively." Football, basketball, baseball, soccer and other primary activities have always been concretely defined as sports in society. However, one of the most physically demanding activities is constantly forgotten when it comes to the realm of sports- dance. Dance requires a tremendous amount of training and creates an aura of competition in which people compete to be the best, win, and take home the trophy- just like in traditionally accepted sports. These sports, however, do not possess an element of psychological health threats that some competitive dancers unfortunately must account for due to the emphasis placed on physical appearance.
After being mesmerized by figure skating at the age of eight, I became a member of the Markham Skating Club. As a competitive figure skater, I must perform various jumps and spins in a choreographed program. I have participated in numerous competitions in Central Ontario and have received multiple medals for my achievements. Yet, my achievement as a figure skater stem from the adversity that I faced throughout my skating journey. This sport has imposed challenges to both my mental and physical strength that have ultimately constructed the qualities of dedication and humility within myself.
Imagine being on the top of the world, on a bitter cold mountain, over top of an enormous crowd. Below where you stand, the lustrous lights are shining on a massive jump, that seems larger than the mountain itself, created for the professional snowboard competition. This gargantuan jump will decide whether you win or lose the competition. Becoming a professional snowboarder has been a dream to me ever since I first was beginning to snowboard. Being on top of the enormous slope and strapping into my bindings instantly made me relaxed and put a grin larger than the slope itself on my face. Everytime I glide down the face of the mountain I become focused and dialed in on my riding. When becoming a professional snowboarder as an occupation, I would
Every person has something inside them that defines them as an individual. This uniqueness can take many forms and could be visible to the outside world or quietly hidden, deep inside. Passion for something specific is often the guiding factor in developing one’s uniqueness and often in ways that were not foreseen. My love of ice hockey has changed my life in ways that I could not have imagined and has shaped my personal growth. My ability to stop a hockey puck defined me; or so I thought!
Contact sports in America, like football and boxing, carry a rich history of the spirit of the game, and the feeling of victory. These games bring us together as we cry out and cheer for our team or fighter as they deliver the winning touchdown, or the knockout that brings them the undisputed champion belt. However, these players are facing injuries that can destroy their career and affect their brain for the rest of their lives. We shouldn’t outlaw contact sports, but we should force safety to become more important. If we want to keep our players safe and continue the tradition of the contact sports we enjoy as a country, then we must evolve our safety in sports, and change the way we view contact sports as a country.

Ping! The sound of a baseball bat rings through the school’s campus. Little do the boys playing baseball know, they are learning important skills while playing ball with their friends. Unfortunately, at the same time they are learning baseball skills, the could be harming their bodies. Students-athletes could be earning friends or earning trips to the hospital. There are positives and negatives to playing on a school sports team.
Are high school sports beneficial or not for students? I personally believe if a student is in a high school sport they’re forced to prioritize between school and their sport, and at a young age I believe the student would decide to use his time to improve in his sport instead of school. Which in the long run would affect his academics, unless they decide to stay up late and work on their homework to keep up with both school and their sport. But, even like that in time the lack of sleep would catch up to them, and cause them to do even worse in both academics, and sports. High school sports are like the lotto in my opinion, many play but only a few get rewarded for their work. Therefore, high school sports cause more negativity than positivity.
I am Jewish. None of my best friends are, so I stand out. People say “are you Hannukan?” Or “are you a seder?” They know nothing about being Jewish. They will never know the joy of flipping latkes, or eating gelt while playing dreidel, or how good it feels to do Tikkun Olam. They don’t know what is under the top of the iceberg, because why would someone of some other place want to dive under there in the first place? They have their own iceberg that they will constantly slip on anyway, so why should they dive under ours? They don’t know, it feels like they will never know what it is like to be Jewish.
In the upcoming summer 2020 Olympics billions of people across the world will be watching competitive rock climbing. During the summer X-Games, there will be proclaimed professional athletes competing in eSports, a revolutionary new form of competitive video gaming. Even chess-boxing, a sport that contains a combination of chess and boxing, will make its way into many major sporting competitions. Every year new underground sports find their way into becoming a considerable part of mainstream conventional sports. Although many traditional sport fans refuse to consider unique and niche sports legitimate, sports can be defined on a wide spectrum of required physical or mental skills.
“Within five minutes, one skateboarder offered a helping hand and tips that made Peyton’s first time skateboarding a great experience (“To the Teenage Boy”). This touching quote from a Jenean Thomas, a mom from ontario is all over the internet. This is only one of many examples how skateboarders are good people. It also gives children a place in society, therefore preventing the likelihood of suicide and depression.
Physical education in school systems is beneficial because it improves students’ health. Without physical education the child’s overall health will decrease. Despite these benefits, some people believe that physical education has no value to children in schools. Physical education is significant in schools because it improves children’s health.
The ‘Friday Night Lights’ have always been accompanied by their fair share of controversies, from TV shows like Friday Night Tykes, to sports related injuries. These debates are especially relevant when the topic is student athletes. High school and youth league sports have always been a popular way to get kids involved and keep them active. They not only gain the confidence required in order to preform on a field in front of a crowd of people but also acquire a group of teammates and friends who are also involved in the same sport. Being engaged in sports at the school level also includes a certain requirement in regards to grades and GPA, which is a very enticing benchmark for kids with a desire to play. In todays society, juvenile crimes are ever present, arguably in relation to boredom. According to
