Honey bees are highly social and live in communities called colonies or hives. These communities consist of one queen bee, several hundred male drone bees & 20,000 to 80,000 female worker bees. All colonies are also the developing place for eggs, larvae and pupae. The number of bees in an area highly depends on which season they are facing. During the spring, the colony will thrive. During the winter, the population will decrease by the hundreds. These colonies also highly depend on diversity among their roles. As the worker and drone bees are the ones that store honey and fertilize.

An egg-laying queen is essential in establishing a strong honey bee colony, and is capable of producing up to 2,000 eggs within a single day. A queen will mate early on in life and then store millions of sperm within her body. They are capable of living up to eight years, but they usually only live through half of that lifespan while producing eggs.

The lives of humans and honeybees have been intertwined for millennia. For at least 8,000 years, humans have sought honey for applications in disciplines ranging from medicine to the culinary arts. But while humans love honey, honeybees provide a much more valuable service: pollination. As the world’s most prolific pollinator, honeybees are essential to the reproduction of many plant species, which in turn benefits other animals and plants. In fact, humans heavily rely on honeybees to pollinate our own food source, a service that is worth billions of dollars a year. Unfortunately, the honeybee population is in a severe and prolonged decline, often in the form of colony collapse disorder, in which entire colonies are seemingly abandoned by adult bees overnight. The few ant queens that survive this “marriage flight” cast off their wings and instinctively begin to look for a spot to start a new ant colony.
