Hidden Children When we talk about world war 2 the first thing that comes to mind is usually the Holocaust, and little attention is paid to the many children who survived the war by hiding. The children themselves wouldn’t talk about for years to come because they thought that since they weren’t actually in the war or in a camp, their story isn’t important. When you 're little you believe in the good in everyone. Though there are some kids that know early on how bad the world can be. Concentration camps were places where hundreds of thousands of jewish people were forced to labor under terrifying conditions, treated like dirt, then stuffed into gas chambers to die. Jewish families faced difficult choices. Should they risk their children being …show more content…
Who could they ask without risking being betrayed? People were scared. Some wouldn’t dare hide a jewish child. If they were caught they would be punished. As hard as it was, jewish families found a way. Children were sent to live with people of different religions. They were forced to hide in cemeteries, in attics and basements. They disappeared completely, and some would never see the light of day for a long time. Felicia Graber wrote an article on hmlc.org about hidden children. She wrote that “The majority of child survivors were hidden children, children under the age of fourteen literally hiding in cemeteries, in holes dug under floor planks, in cellars, closets, haylofts, attics. ..Some of these were loved and accepted. Others were tolerated, exploited, or abused.” Being a hidden child didn’t guarantee life would be easy. People would take children in only to betray them later, and some blackmailed families with the knowledge of their children’s whereabouts. Hidden children might have not been in the war at all, but they …show more content…
For the hidden child diaries are just one form in which they express themselves. Considering the life they had been forced into and the death and destruction just outside their door, children used artwork to open up and deal with the emotions they couldn’t show to anyone else. In a ushmm.org article say’s, “ Diaries, among the most intimate forms of writing, record innermost thoughts, hopes, fears, and aspirations. They generally are not meant for the public or prying eyes. For a hidden child, however, a diary 's personal nature presented a serious danger. A detail about one 's real family or identity could betray its author as well as his or her rescuer.” This show’s how diaries and other writing and work that might reveal their location was a huge risk. It also sheds light on how important diaries might have been to the kids who kept them. Work from these children has beencollected and kept for observing and to catch a glimpse of the world they lived
•In coded form, Irena managed to record all of the children's true identities and their temporary identities. All of the children's true identities were buried in a neighbor's yard, across the street from German barracks, underneath an apple tree.
The holocaust was truly a dark time in recent human history. Families were torn apart. Those who had at least family member had someone to look to for strength when they didn’t feel like they could carry on. As much as family can be a burden, the positives outweigh the negatives.
“I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” (Elie Wiesel) The Holocaust is a topic that is still not forgotten and is used by many people, as a motivation, to try not to repeat history. Many lessons can be taught from learning about the Holocaust, but to Eve Bunting and Fred Gross there is one lesson that could have changed the result of this horrible event. The Terrible Things, by Eve Bunting, and The Child of the Holocaust, by Fred Gross, both portray the same moral meaning in their presentations but use different evidence and word choice to create an overall
It is in a child's nature to be dependant of its parents and family members. They rely on them to protect and take care of them, so when they are suddenly ripped out of that comfort and protection, imagine the impact it would have on them. During the Holocaust, there was nothing the parents could do to protect their children; it was inevitable if they were Jewish they were always at risk. But on top of their vulnerability, children were frequently separated from their family and loved ones. Whether it be going into a concentration camp or going into hiding, the Holocaust has many examples of families being torn apart. One example would be with twins. Twins we often used for scientific experimentation, and when they were brought into concentration camps they were immediately identified and separated. The children that were used for these experiments very rarely survived them, and if they did they never saw their twin again. In just a short amount of time they were ripped away from their families and comfort and thrown into this chaos and unbearable setting (Nancy Sega...
I keep my journal hidden; the script, the drawings, the color, the weight of the paper, contents I hope never to be experienced by another. My journal is intensely personal, temporal and exposed. When opening the leather bound formality of Alice Williamson's journal a framework of meaning is presupposed by the reader's own feelings concerning the medium. Reading someone else's diary can be, and is for myself, an voyeuristic invasion of space. The act of reading makes the private and personal into public. Yet, for Alice Williamson and many other female journalists of the Civil War period, the journal was creating a public memory of the hardship that would be sustained when read by others. The knowledge of the outside reader reading of your life was as important as the exercise of recording for one's self; creating a sense of sentimentality connecting people through emotions. (Arnold)
The children during the holocaust had many struggles with their physical health. They were forced to stay in very small places and were unable to have contact with a doctor if they had gotten sick. Also they had a lack of food and some children in their host homes would get abused and mistreated. At least a little over one million children were murdered during the holocaust (“Children’s diaries”). Out of all the Jewish children who had suffered because of the Nazis and their axis partners, only a small number of surviving children actually had wrote diaries and journals (“Children’s diaries”). Miriam Wattenberg is one out of the hundreds of children who wrote about their life story during the time of the holocaust (“Children’s Diaries”). She was born October 10, 1924 (“Children’s Diaries”). Miriam started writing her diary in October 1939, after Poland surrendered to the German forces (“Children’s Diaries”). The Wattenberg family fled to Warsaw in November 1940 (“Children’s Diaries”). At that time she was with her parents and younger sister (“Children’s Diaries”). They all had to live in the Warsaw ghetto (“Children’s Diaries”). Halina, another child survivor, tells what happened to her while in hiding. Halina and her family went into hiding ...
teach about the Holocaust to children, it will be in vain if we do not
There were two types of hidden children: the children that didn’t look like the stereotypical Jew, and were hidden in plain sight, in an orphanage or maybe with a family who pretended the child was an orphaned family member. Then there were the ones that were truly hidden, such as in an abandoned building, a hidden room, or- as Lola was- in a hole dug beneath a cellar in a farmhouse on the edge of town. Either way, the children had to stay silent. While Lola Rein writes of her time in hiding she says, “But what kind of life is this? Children are supposed to be noisy, not silent…they are supposed to be part of the world, not live like they don’t exist” (Rein Kaufne). Lola also tells of how, during her year of hiding, she hardly spoke.
Juvenile delinquency is a conduct by a juvenile or a person below the legal age that is above parental control thus dealt with by the law. Crime in this case cannot be punishable by death or life imprisonment. There are many cases of juvenile delinquency in recent times that have raised many issues in the United State’s legal systems. There are many ways of explaining juvenile delinquency and crime when it comes to; cause, results, and legal actions pertaining to crimes. Alex Kotlowitz in his book, “There Are No Children Here” focuses on crime and juvenile delinquency through life experiences. This story is about the life of two boys who the author researched for a few years. The two boys were from Chicago, grew up in a poor family, surrounded by poverty, gangs, and violence as do many of us who come from low income, minority filled areas. The two boys unfortunately, sad to say end up in juvenile hall which clearly depicts the whole concept of crime and juvenile delinquency that arises from more issues than simply meets the eye . Issues relating to the social disorganization theory of poverty, disorganization, and low community control. This paper will analyze the story using themes that relate to juvenile delinquency and further discuss causes and ways to control juvenile delinquency
The “Land of the free” is not so free after all. Human trafficking is the third largest international crime industry after illegal drugs and arms trafficking . Human trafficking is like modern day slavery; it is defined as the loss of freedom to another 's control by force, fraud or coercion. The United States turns out to be the #1 destination for child sex trafficking. I chose this topic because it interested me the most out of all other topics. When finding a topic to do research on, none of the topics left me asking myself so many questions. The fact that i barely knew anything about human trafficking, made me realize that there might be many people out there that are like me. People who probably think that human trafficking rarely happens,
Poverty is “the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions” (Merriam-Webster dictionary, 2015); in other words, struggling to provide a comfortable living style. It is the cause of family stress and many other problems, especially for the children. Millions of people around the world are struggling with poverty; families suffering to provide enough food seem to be growing in numbers. According to the United States Census Bureau, the poverty rate was highest in the 1960s and decreased greatly in the 1970s. However, it is now slowly starting to increase again. Recently released census data by the Bureau showed that one in five people are living in poverty (Census Bureau, 2014). Poverty is even
Most of the human beings experienced the sentiment of being exploited many times in their lives; so, how are children supposed to feel after being abused throughout their childhood? Child labor is described as the act that deprives teenagers of their childhood, potential or dignity, and is dangerous to their physical and intellectual development such as forced labor that interferes with their schooling, work that makes them depart school in early age and humiliation which is mentally and socially unsafe. This act also damages their family ties because of their permanent absence of home. Over all the developing countries, children work to earn living for their families. They get a little cash which is very insufficient to help the children families or the children themselves to lead a
There is a lot of reasons that let people became homelessness, some of them faced bank corrupt or poor financially situation like Veterans, also you could become homeless by doing crime such as sexual harassment. Some homeless became homeless with out doing anything like children who their parents can not take care of them. The implication of this is that efforts are in place to ensure that at least, the problem of homelessness is solved. For this purpose, the paper will provide a detailed discussion regarding the state of homelessness and how it be effected to adult and children in the West Virginia and the united state also some part of the world.
Child abuse refers to lack of care or any type of emotional, physical or sexual mistreatment that results in emotional damage or physical injury to a child or a youth. In most countries, children are considered to be anyone below 18 years of age. Child abuse can occur directly by harming a child or indirectly by failing to prevent the child from any form of harm or injury. Child abuse can occur either in the family set up, in the community set up or in an institution such as a school. Also, children can be abused by adults or by other children or by people who know them or people who are complete strangers to them.
Child labour is an issue that has plagued society since the earliest of times. Despite measures taken by NGOs as well as the UN, child labour is still a prevalent problem in today’s society. Article 23 of the Convention on the Rights of a Child gives all children the right to be protected from economic exploitation and from performing any work that is likely to be hazardous or to interfere with the child 's education, or to be harmful to the child 's health or physical, mental, spiritual, moral or social development.1 Child labour clearly violates this right as well as others found in the UDHR. When we fail to see this issue as a human rights violation children around the world are subjected to hard labour which interferes with education, reinforces
