GUN CONTROL & FIREARM-RELATED DEATHS

Gun control debates frequently saturate American media news outlets at least once a year, especially following firearm-related massacres that capture national attention. The latest event that precipitated such heated discussion was the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting of 2012, where the lives of young precious first graders were unfairly taken. This tragedy reignited the endless evaluation of the value of the 2nd amendment in contemporary society. Seeing as the most common governmental mission is to "serve and protect," there is both a moral and political obligation to enact gun control legislation because it reduces loss of life and is essential to the common protection of a nation’s citizenry. …show more content…

Firearms and homicides have an appalling correlation within the past 5 years. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, 67% of all homicides of that year were committed using firearms (FBI). The FBI suggests that the preferred weapon of choice is a gun, as it would logically be deduced. Of course, a stronger gun legislation would not entirely eliminate homicides but if we were to compare a gun-shot wound and a stab wound it is safe to say that a gun-shot wound would have a higher chance of killing someone than a stab wound, which is why it is morally imperative to enact a stronger gun legislation in order to reduce the risk of losing the lives of our loved ones. Amazingly, a 2002 study in the journal Epidemiology, found that over all 50 states, during a ten-year period from 1988 to 1997, people in states with more gun availability had elevated rates of firearm suicide (Miller et al.). The message that miller is trying to convey is that because firearms are more accessible in certain states the chances of a loved one killing themselves is higher than it would be if there was a stronger gun legislation. This also proves that states with weak gun control legislation gives the power to anyone even those with mental disorders to easily access a firearm and hurt themselves or others.
