There have been controversial discussions in the United States about whether gun control legislation should be passed or not. Gun control advocates urge the government to impose stricter gun control laws while anti gun control advocates strongly oppose this idea. It is sad to see that some people in today’s society are not aware of the startling number of guns that American citizens keep and what they use these guns for. Only by passing gun control laws will there be fewer tragedies caused by gun violence. It is an indisputable fact that more guns mean more violence, and more violence means more deaths. We don’t actually have the constitutional right to own guns individually, it is the right to a “well-regulated militia”. The National Rifle Association, as known as the NRA believe that they should "protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.... and enjoy the right to use arms….” They interpret the words in the 2nd amendments as ‘all persons have the right to bear arms’, and any laws that deprive any citizen of the rights provided is “unconstitutional” and “inhuman”. In fact, the Founding Fathers “never intended to create an unregulated individual right to a gun”. The phrase “well regulated militia” and the right “to keep and bear arms” should come together. At that time, Americans expected to be able to own guns, this is a legacy of English common law and rights. The overwhelming use of the phrase “bear arms” in those days is actually referring to a militia. The NRA and gun advocates misinterpret the meaning of the words in the Second Amendment and claim that everybody has the constitutional rights to bear arms. Due to nowadays technological advancement, new firearms are invented, such as handguns, missile launchers and machine guns. With the help of these new inventions, killing become a much easier task than it was before. With a single shot, hundreds of bullets come out at the same time.
