Maybe because I am finally of the age to vote but this year’s election is extra engaging to me. I absolutely loved the election discussion we had in class today and was especially intrigued by the dialogue regarding “the black vote.” Historically, over the past 50 years, the majority of the black populace has voted democratic. This has led to the media grouping black people into one category and labeling them “the black vote,” totally negating the fact that just like any other population, blacks share dissimilar beliefs, values, and perspectives. This type of labeling also occurs with women (i.e. “the female vote” and minorities (i.e. “the Latino vote,” etc.) However, this type of categorizing seldom occurs with “the white vote.” Nevertheless, these overreaching labels of identity politics have become so commonplace in the media and elections, that the general population tends to blindly adopt these terms. However, it is critical that one not let their language slip and combine all members of a marginalized group into one category. An interviewer even asked America Ferrera about who she is going to vote for if it were a choice between Ted Cruz or Hillary Clinton? The actress was dumbfounded that a reporter would assume that as a Latino woman, she would naturally side with one of these candidates. Ms. Ferrera responded by asking the white, male reporter who he was going to vote for, given the fact that he had so many options. Link:
