Why do always assume what someone is from when we first hear about them? A lot of us end up assuming what someone looks like as well as what they might be like. We always do this and it just isn't right to do that. We do the exact same with Death. Though not everyone will do this, there are some who will. Death is not all that his name says, but were blind to see past that.
Thesis: Death is a not that bad of guy as the story tells is side of the story. Death does many things when taking the dead to the afterlife. Death is a kind and caring person who actually seems to be forced into doing this.
Death has shown many times of how he takes care of the dead who go to the afterlife. Before Death talks about the story of The Book Thief, Death

Though he seems to show most of it towards Liesel. Death has a moment of thought in “The Flag” Chapter for Liesel or as we know at that point “The Book Thief”. “I wanted to stop. To crouch down. I wanted to say “I’m sorry, child.” But that is not allowed.” Death shows empathy for Liesel as she seems to be in a very depressed state. We find out that this ends up being a foreshadowing of the end of the story. People who show empathy for someone generally are people who care about many other. Thing is Death is not allowed to interact with the people who are currently living. Though we may not know why Death is not allowed to interact with the humans who are living. We do know that Death is not the heartless, gross, terrifying, grotesque, being we all see him as. He has empathy for poor Liesel (Spoilers) that had lost everyone she loved at the hand of an explosion. Very few people managed to survive the explosion. Liesel being one of the lucky few had no one to come to her as she was one of the only survivors around. Death saw it all. The death of the many Liesel had loved. Later on Liesel was to be adopted by the Mayor’s wife and have her third family. Remember this was taking place during World War II where Hitler was seen as a threat. Hitler was not afraid of attacking the Jews. Furthermore, Hitler would do anything to remove them from the society that he has created. Death hates the idea of …show more content…
He may be Death but he seems to be forced into this. Death is not that fond of wars as he says “They say that war is Death’s best friend, but I must offer you a different point of on that one. To me, war is like the new boss who expects impossible. He stands over your shoulder repeating one thing, incessantly: “Get it done, get it done”. So you work harder. You get the job done. The boss, however, does not thank you. He asks for more.”(309) As you see Death sees it as the most annoying job ever in history. He talks about it as if he works for a company that is unruly and quite exhausting. It seems the job that we have bestowed upon is just getting him tired. Death never gets a break from this. Death shows empathy with no one showing it back towards him. Empathy is always needed. Yet we seem to not give it to Death. At the very end of the story he says something that proves it. “***A LAST NOTE FROM YOUR NARRATOR***I am haunted by humans” This is quite true as he takes the souls of the humans. Not only that the amount of deaths on average per day is 151,600. The death rate back then must`ve been heavily raised possibly putting it higher than this number. If you account for how long he has done this. Death can say he is haunted by humans, after all he has been taking our souls back and forth ever since he
Death has feelings as much as any human, imagining, getting bored, distracted, and especially wondering (350, 243, 1, 375 respectively). Odd, one could say for an eternal metaphysical being. But then again, not that queer once having considered how Death spends his time. He is there at the dying of every light, that moment that the soul departs its physical shell, and sees the beauty or horror of that moment. Where to a human witnessing a death first hand (even on a much more detached level than our narrator) can easily be a life changing event, Death is forced to witness these passings for nearly every moment of his eternal life. Emotional overload or philosophical catalyst? Death gains his unique perspective on life through his many experiences with the slowly closing eyelids and muttered last words. Yet in this...
People say the mind is a very complex thing. The mind gives people different interpretations of events and situations. A person state of mind can lead to a death of another person. As we all know death is all around us in movies, plays, and stories. The best stories that survive throughout time involve death in one form or another. For example, William Shakespeare is considered as one of the greatest writers in literary history known for having written a lot of stories concerning death like Macbeth or Julius Caesar. The topic of death in stories keeps people intrigued and on the edge of their seats. Edgar Allan Poe wrote two compelling stories that deal with death “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Raven.” In “The
He begins by looking at the very common views of death that are held by most people in the world, and tells us that he will talk of death as the "unequivocal and permanent end to our existence" and look directly at the nature of death itself (1). The first view that
Death is one of the main themes of the novel, it is a war. Death is going to be something that comes of wars and fighting. The war is filled with many
Death states the end before the begging to exemplify how there is no overcoming the dominant force of fate. As used in Death’s side notes, foreshadowing the end of the story appears to be Death’s favorite part of narrating the story. An instance when Death suggests the passing of Rudy Steiner is when he states, “***A SMALL ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT RUDY STEINER*** He didn’t deserve to die the way he did” (Zusak 241). While analyzing this quotation, Zusak clearly says Liesel’s best friend Rudy, is going to die. The mystery of this statement appears to be how and why this affair transpired. Yet, Rudy’s outcome is still identified, the question now remains, why did Death reveal this information prior ...
In Markus Zusak's novel, The Book Thief, the narrator Death, makes a statement with regards to human beings,” So much good, so much evil. Just add water.” (Zusak 164). With integrating water, you are changing the “recipe,” thereby changing the outcome and determining whether it will be positive or negative. This personified version of Death expresses this because he can see how the circumstances humans are in, determines how they will react. Death observes how the circumventing conditions mankind is exposed to determines if they will bring out their wicked or righteous side. This is frequently noted in The Book Thief, where Death follows a young girl, named Liesel, during 1939 Nazi Germany. He is amazed by how humans can be both so good and
Death can be harsh. Death can be punishing. Death can be for the most, sad. As most people see death, it brings tough and hard emotions to their minds. Most don’t understand that death should be celebrated. They believe that once they die they never see them again. This idea that death is the end, has haunted the human life for all of eternity. Death brings cold thoughts to a person, which makes them miserable. The passing away of a beloved person, can be extremely dangerous through the different ideas and attitudes that come with death. This is what came to be in the play Hamlet. The characters put their emotion into death and some of the different out puts toward death were surprising. Throughout Hamlet, the attitudes toward death are astonishing between the characters the Ghost, Claudius, and Hamlet.
Death is something inevitable which all human beings must have to face today or tomorrow, or some part of their life. There are many people around the world sinking their lives in the darkness of dignity. Each and every day individuals all throughout the U.S. are diagnosed with terminal illness. They are compelled to wait until they die naturally, at the same time their bodies deteriorate by their sickness that will eventually take their lives. Some of the time, this implies living excruciating pain ,and that most states in our nation cannot do anything about it legally. People should have the will to live or die as the death of dignity is one of those acts that promotes this behavior , as a result it should be legalized all over the states,
In the picture “You too belong to the Fuhrer”, the ignorance of life is shown, the simplicity to reach the better place of heaven also being communicated. Similar to that of the picture, the poem “Death” grants through the pretenses of drunken happiness that predictable, empathetic Death is a much better option. In the faces of human death, The Book Thief, shows the hopelessness of life and how death sees both hope and burdens. Modern day society point to the fact that Death is an unalterable, knee-crippling atrocity that everyone should turn a blind eye to. It is pointed in such a dark light that no one dares think about it, much less looks forward to it. In reality though, Death is sometimes the best option. Perhaps that is why Death is
The subject of death and dying can cause many controversies for health care providers. Not only can it cause legal issues for them, but it also brings about many ethical issues as well. Healthcare professionals not only deal with patient issues but also those of the family. Death has been an eternal problem, which human being faces all across history. Facing death requires enormous brave, furthermore, being responsible for death requires depth of wisdom. Back in centuries, individuals were deeply influenced by the ongoing beliefs, whether it was religious belief or just what people called the belief of the Ancient Greek, it manipulated them into acting in normal life and facing death to a large extent. As in texts “Hamlet” by Shakespeare and “Oedipus the King” by Sophocles, their personality and behaviour have been dramatically and successfully shaped to reflect on how the conception of their belief changed the ways of dealing with the world in regard to the understanding after death. Both of them demonstrated
In the encounter between the two allegorical characters, Death and Everyman, the antagonist, Death is displayed in detail. Death comes suddenly to Everyman when it is least expected and it cannot be delayed or postponed by any means. Acting only under the command of the Almighty, Death cannot be bribed, for it is imposed equally on the rich, on the poor, on all races, and on every nation. Death is not just the end of man’s existence, but it is also the means of transition from this life to eternity in either heaven or hell. Having a legal right on every human being, because of Adam's original sin, death cannot be ignored.
Death is the one great certainty in life. Some of us will die in ways out of our control, and most of us will be unaware of the moment of death itself. Still, death and dying well can be approached in a healthy way. Understanding that people differ in how they think about death and dying, and respecting those differences, can promote a peaceful death and a healthy manner of dying.
Death is something that causes fear in many peoples lives. People will typically try to avoid the conversation of death at all cost. The word itself tends to freak people out. The thought of death is far beyond any living person’s grasp. When people that are living think about the concept of death, their minds go to many different places. Death is a thing that causes pain in peoples lives, but can also be a blessing.
Death is inevitable. As mortal souls, we know that we will be condemned to death. Although, we will never know when it approaches. Death is devious, agonizing, fearful, and inescapable, it is the very thing that can send chills down our spine that makes us cringe. Many of us fear death, because of the things we hear of it or the mental images associated with someone on their death bed suffering in pain. But someone of us has acknowledged that there is no escaping it, and we go into the game knowing what to expect. Over the course of the semester, we’ve read different literary works, in them, we were confronted with characters who had to deal with death, some of whom took their own lives, some who faced their death without fear, and some who have wished for death but did not die. These characters include; Antigone and Haimon, in the play Antigone by Sophocles, Socrates in the Apology by Plato, and Julius Caesar and Brutus in the play Julius Caesar by Shakespeare.
