Plastic surgery is a type of surgery that deals with the alteration of the face or body. This is often done either to change or improve one’s appearance for satisfaction, repair birth defects such as ear deformities, or even for health benefits. Specifically, cosmetic surgery reconstructs a part of the face or body that the person would like to change or improve, which allows them to be more satisfied with their self-image and have more confidence. So, does cosmetic surgery have mental health benefits? Cosmetic surgery can really boost oneself’s self-esteem. Rhinoplasty, or simply a “nose job” can be done to improve the appearance of the nose. “Nose Job Boosts Student’s Self Esteem” talks about a high school student who is bullied because of his nose, which leads to having a low self-esteem and low self-worth. With the help of a charity, his nose is improved. With a more proportionate nose, the high school student is very satisfied and claims that he “feels a lot more confident.” On the other hand, “I Had a Nose Job and Regretted It” talks about a young woman that had undergone the cosmetic surgery because of a comparison someone had made about her nose years earlier. After revealing her new nose to a friend, she was told that she had not looked any different. Because of this, she had come to a realization that she had changed who she was superficial without an apparent difference. For the sake of simplicity, plastic surgery is done either because you want to, or to better your health. For those that choose to undergo plastic surgery for satisfaction, it is specifically called cosmetic surgery. As a person with a low self-esteem and is very self-conscious of their appearance, I believe that if you choose to improve a part of your face or body to enhance your self-image, there are mental health benefits that come alongside. When you are reconstructing a part of your body or face, you are improving it so that enhances your overall appearance. This way, you are much more satisfied with how you look, which can lead to a higher self-esteem and a boost of confidence.
