Schools are putting more emphasis on education early on. Kindergarten is no longer just easy creative opportunities but instead is a chance to jumpstart reading, writing, and math. To ensure children take away as much as possible from the experience it is important they are prepared. Kindergarteners with summer or early fall birthdays typically are younger than their classmates and many do not have the key skills, which develop with age, to make them successful. Waiting a year before starting school provides time for younger children to develop further. Although having a child who waited a year is difficult on teachers to provide for all intellects, the majority of children benefit and are satisfied with the decision later in life.

A major reason a family would not redshirt their child would be financial issues. Sending a child to public kindergarten eliminates the costs of another year of paid childcare which some families cannot afford. Redshirting is nearly twice as prevalent in schools serving affluent student bodies as it is among those whose mean household income is close to the poverty line (Source C). Better off families can afford not working another year or paying for preschool which other families do not have the luxury to do. It is important to continue educating children during the year they sit out and a child from a low-income family might be hindered by their lack of educational opportunities by not attending school. Although it is not an option for all families redshirting is a good choice because some children mature slower and will benefit from extra time to develop and feel comfortable (Source A). Every capable family with a child that qualifies should redshirt because if they choose not to it could hurt them in the long run through future test scores and lost possible educational advantages. Some claim redshirting creates challenges for schools to provide for a wide range of maturity and ability levels (Source D).
