Recommended: Long term and short term effects of child soldiers
At the beginning of researching, I was really unsure what I thought about this whole topic. It was the first time ever thinking about it. Know, doing a lot of research, I think that child soldiers should not be called criminals, they should be victims.
I saw a lot of information about kids being forced to kill their best friends. According to TRTWORLD article, "I was forced literally to kill my best friend as an initiation process into the army," a former child soldier from Democratic Republic of Congo Michel Chikwanine told The WorldPost. "That's something I will never forget, and I still fight with every single day.” I think sometimes, we take our friends for granted. I think that for anyone, killing your best friend would be like killing

In the article “Armed and Underaged” by Jefferey Gettleman, he stated “ “Girls are often pressed into duty as cooks or messengers. Many are subjected to sexual abuse, including rape.” I find this awful. I can understand, I can't really say that I agree with the girls being cooks but i definitely am disgusted by the thought of them being sexually abused. It is a horrible thing and it should happen to nobody. Although they have been forced into abuse and horrible duties, they have taken many lives and this is still considered heinous and horrific. Alex Neve wrote, “I was fortunate enough to have escaped to Kenya and found another life through music. But the lives of many children are cut short before they can escape. The most difficult part of this situation is that these children do not have a choice when they are introduced, often after they have been orphaned.” Emmanuel Jal talks about how his life didn't get cut short, but many lives of young children get cut short, it they dont make the decision to escape before they could get killed. I think it was different for the other kids than it was for Emmanuel because he found something to make it a little better. He found Music. A lot of kids have to be put in a orphanage because of what happened to them.(March 19, 2013 at 3:26
As defined by Timothy Webster, author of Babes with Arms: International Law and Child Soldiers, a child soldier is “any person under the age of eighteen who is or has been associated with any kind of regular or irregular armed group, including those who serve as porters, spies, cooks, messengers and including girls recruited for sexual purposes (Webster, 2007, pp.230). As this definition reveals, a child soldier is more than simply a child with a gun. It is estimated that there are approximately 300,000 children under the age of 18, being used as soldiers in 33 conflicts currently, and this figure continues to rise (Webster, 2007, pp.227). Similarly, in 1999 it was estimated that more than 120,000 children, under the age of 18, were used as soldiers to fight ...
The first reason these kids shouldn’t be prosecuted or punished in any way is because it wasn’t their choice to be a soldier to begin with. According to Child Soldiers, Prosecution, most kids were forced to fight and had no choice of weather to enlist or not. There are about 200,000 child soldiers worldwide state's Armed and Underage, (Gettleman) and these kids are doing things their adolescent brains
Children at such a young age don't have the mental ability to think long term about their actions, especially when they are being forced or drugged. Some may argue that if child criminals get punished for their actions, then child soldiers should too, but that is just not the case. The difference being, child criminals choose to commit their crimes, child soldiers are forced to commit crimes. As an example, in the article Child Soldiers it states, “More often than not, children have no say in whether they enlist or not and once recruited the children have become brainwashed through the use of drugs and alcohol” (Child Soldiers).
A child soldier is a child who has been abducted and forced to fight in a conflict in which they would not typically be involved in. Child soldiers have their relatively normal childhood taken away if they are abducted. Instead of playing with the other children, they are forced to murder them. Many are forced to watch the people they once knew be tortured and they may even take part in the act. Child soldiers are internationally banned, yet many countries still utilize them to this day. Uganda is one country in which they are used. The use of children in armed combat in Uganda sheds light on the fact that the concept of power is indeed a double-edged sword.
Child soldier is a worldwide issue, but it became most critical in the Africa. Child soldiers are any children under the age of 18 who are recruited by some rebel groups and used as fighters, cooks, messengers, human shields and suicide bombers, some of them even under the age of 10 when they are forced to serve. Physically vulnerable and easily intimidated, children typically become obedient soldiers. Most of them are abducted or recruited by force, and often compelled to follow orders under threat of death. As society breaks down during conflict, leaving children with no access to school, driving them from their homes, or separating them from family members, many children feel that rebel groups are their best chance for survival.
An example in, “Analysis: should child soldiers be prosecuted for their crimes?Pg 1” states that, “ If minor children who have committed serious war crimes are not prosecuted, this could be an incentive for their commanders to delegate them to the dirtiest orders, aiming at impunity.” Also, “Summaative Essay Pg 2,” states that “ Child soldiers have been responsible for some of the most brutal acts in wartime such as rape, mutilation, and mass killings of innocent people,” First of all I would like to direct you to the second piece of evidence. Child soldiers are responsible for man unthinkable actions. These actions change the lives of many people. I believe that the commanders benefit most of all from child soldiers not being prosecuted. If child soldiers are not prosecuted this gives the commander, and the children, reason to think these crimes are okay. And they're
“Compelled to become instruments of war, to kill and be killed, child soldiers are forced to give violent expression to the hatreds of adults” (“Child Soldiers” 1). This quotation by Olara Otunnu explains that children are forced into becoming weapons of war. Children under 18 years old are being recruited into the army because of poverty issues, multiple economic problems, and the qualities of children, however, many organizations are trying to implement ways to stop the human rights violation.
Many people believe this and I recognize why, but on the other hand, child soldiers should not be locked away and actually be put into rehab so they become less of a danger. Many citizens also think, child soldiers should be locked away since all of their actions as an illegal soldier were indeed, illegal. This would make sense if they chose to join as an illegal soldier, but what they didn’t choose though was whether they were forced into doing all of these illegal crimes with drugs and alcohol stuffed in them. So why lock them away for doing something they had no control over doing? Finally, it has been said by many people that child soldiers are exact replicas of child criminals. For example, “Child soldiers are no different from child criminals. Child soldiers have been responsible for some of the most brutal and violent acts in wartime. In Sierra Leone child soldiers committed acts of rape, mutilation and mass killings of civilians” (INSERT author). To reinforce what was said before, these kids had no control over what they were doing! They were just trying to defend their drugged, abused, and unprotected bodies from getting injured in battle. Imagine you were a child soldier in battle. They drugged you up before hitting the fields. You see a large man with a gun bigger than yours. Do you fight back, or just stand there and let him kill
These kids are inexperienced at using a weapon so this can be dangerous or deadly to themselves and others. Child soldiers are not perpetrators because they have the choice to kill others which means they are criminals, but if they are forced to then are victims. Children shouldn’t be forced to become a soldier be given drugs before a war. But they should be given amnesty because they are only kids and they need pardon for being forced to do something. In conclusion. Child soldiers are victims because they are being drugged, injured or killed, and can cause
Children were forced to join if they do not have an education, been adopted, or their family is poor. People in the past lost many children in a war than the modern death today. Kids are being killed in the battle each time they enter a war. There appears three hundred thousand and more today of child soldiers is active in conflicts around the world. Forty percent of the armed forces, including national armies, militias, gangs, terrorist, and special forces in the world use children In Iraq. Young children were taken from a camp on the northern side of Iraq during the year early in 2002 where people use their own children as soldiers, where the people allowed children to be in a war without questioning by different Country and
The “Land of the free” is not so free after all. Human trafficking is the third largest international crime industry after illegal drugs and arms trafficking . Human trafficking is like modern day slavery; it is defined as the loss of freedom to another 's control by force, fraud or coercion. The United States turns out to be the #1 destination for child sex trafficking. I chose this topic because it interested me the most out of all other topics. When finding a topic to do research on, none of the topics left me asking myself so many questions. The fact that i barely knew anything about human trafficking, made me realize that there might be many people out there that are like me. People who probably think that human trafficking rarely happens,
The Truth: Impact of Combat Deployment on Children and Families Did you know that nearly one-third of military children score as “high risk” for child psychosocial morbidity, which means a lack of ability to function normally in social groups. This rate is 2.5 times higher than the national average. My goal is to educate you on the impacts deployment has on military children and how military resiliency training can help families stay strong and supportive of each other during stressful times, reducing the psychosocial impacts on military children. Allow me to share some facts and information from the Military.com website regarding the impacts of deployment on military children and families and how resiliency training can lower the effects.
The quote is from the same article it states, ¨For instance, many believe that child soldiers are mere replicas of child criminals; child criminals are prosecuted. Over the course of the past decades child soldiers have been responsible for some of the most brutal acts in wartime, such as rape, mutilation and mass killings of innocent civilians. ¨This shows that they should be held accountable because they are committing brutal and disturbing crimes, traumatizing many people and just to think they are kids purposely doing
Child abuse refers to lack of care or any type of emotional, physical or sexual mistreatment that results in emotional damage or physical injury to a child or a youth. In most countries, children are considered to be anyone below 18 years of age. Child abuse can occur directly by harming a child or indirectly by failing to prevent the child from any form of harm or injury. Child abuse can occur either in the family set up, in the community set up or in an institution such as a school. Also, children can be abused by adults or by other children or by people who know them or people who are complete strangers to them.
There is a lot of tension in the air right now when it comes to the possibility of a world wide war breaking out in the coming years. Many wars have been fought, an unethical amount of destruction has taken place across the world as a result, and some people still think military force should be option one in hostile situations. However others believe diplomacy alone is enough to handle all matters of conflict. The use of military force should be justified based on the circumstances of the situation due the to high price of operating military equipment, the efficient, but deadly, takedown precision, and because of the possibility of civilian casualties. The government often employs private military contractors (PMCs) to supposedly cut down
