Carrie Bauer holds the director position at Hamilton’s Academy of Grief and Loss in Des Moines, Iowa. Like any social worker, Ms. Bauer’s journey to attaining her Bachelors of Social Work is quite a story. Her education and previous work experience have gotten her to the position that she is currently in. However, as she looks back, she expresses some things she wishes she could change. Now that she has landed a position that she loves, she gets to use her social work degree to assist families through an extremely difficult time. With many programs available at Hamilton’s, and a very small staff, Ms. Bauer keeps very busy as she coordinates everything. She is truly grateful for everything she has accomplished and looks forward to informing future social workers about the opportunities that the grief option brings.
Journey
The journey to becoming a social worker is not one that happens overnight. Many years of difficult decisions get theses amazing caregivers to the ultimate goal. In addition, years of studying and exposure of the field allow these workers to be accurately prepared for their future careers. Ms. Bauer’s education, work experience, and difficulties have all brought her to the remarkable position she is in today.

For Ms. Bauer, the plan didn’t always include becoming a social worker. Nursing had always been her ultimate dream growing up, and she spent many hours working in a nursing home trying to achieve this goal. She began studying nursing at the University of Northern Iowa. After a year of college, she found that she didn’t love it as much as she once thought. This led her to the decorated social work program.
