A border wall prohibiting immigrants to come into the United States should not be built because it negatively affects the environment and it is a complete waste of money. Denying people of a better life simply because they are not native to the land is a cruel act. That is what the first settlers who came to America did, there is no difference except for the fact that European settlers were violent and killed many Native Americans. Most foreign immigrants who come to this country today are arriving here in search for an improved quality of life and a secure future for their children. Trump’s desired wall will come along with a plethora of expenses including economically. The cost of the wall is estimated to be about $21.6 billion but that may be an underestimate (Felbab-Brown 2017). President Trump had originally stated that Mexico was going to pay for the wall but that idea was quickly shut down as Mexico declined, leaving the United States to pay for it. Homeland Security still is not certain about how the wall will be like appearance wise, but they do know that it will be more than 25 feet tall at at least six feet deep to prevent tunneling (Roche 2017). It will take up a significant amount of space hindering animals from traveling in their habitats and getting their basic needs like food and water. The wildlife is blocked and they can’t migrate making their habitat smaller and they run the risk of not finding mates and becoming inbred. Furthermore, border walls cause flooding. This was seen when the Bush Administration placed a wall around the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument area, which like the border, has a similar dry terrain (Roche 2017).
