Manta rays, humpback whales, and dolphins are all gentle giants of the sea. These playful creatures enjoy leaping out of water, creating an unforgettable experience for the tourists of Hawaii (Saito). On the other hand, jellyfish and sharks cause fear in beachgoers because their attacks can lead to painful and life threatening injuries. Swimmers in Hawaii are often victimized by box jellyfish. The stings hurt quite a bit and cause an unpleasant burning sensation. Some people even suffer from a severe allergic reaction to the toxin and are hospitalized (“Dangers in Hawaii”). People may also be hospitalized from shark attacks. Three to four shark attacks occur each year in Hawaii, usually resulting in only the loss of an appendage. However, numerous shark sightings as close as twenty yards away from shore to as far as out at sea have been reported. Jan TenBruggencate’s article, "A Shark Bites off Left Arm of Teenage Kauai Surfer,” tells the story of thirteen-year-old Bethany Hamilton who fell victim to a shark attack in October of 2003. While surfing in Hawaii, a shark estimated to be 12 to 15 feet long bit into Bethany’s surfboard and took a majority of her left arm. Other major shark attacks include Joe Thomson, 1985, who lost his right forearm, Michael Coots, 1997, who lost the lower portion of his right leg, and Hokuanu Aki, 2002, who lost his left foot. Each victim had to fight with the shark to break free and were lucky to escape with minimal

When she won that award she said: “In my mind, I see a line. And over that line, I see green fields, and lovely flowers, and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line, but I can 't seem to get there no how. I can 't seem to get over that line. And let me tell you something. The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there”. As opportunities are the start points for anything exposure to occur, there needs to be more complexed, less sexualized, and versatile roles for African American women are not taking on roles that negatively depict who they
In life, some people may feel the need to lean on the shoulders of others, however in some cases where one is scared, the guidance of others may become ones dependence on them. This can have both positive and negative effects, depending on the circumstance of those involved. In the case of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Ophelia becomes more or less dependent on the protection of the men in her family. This eventually drives her to madness upon Polonius’s death. Through examining how Ophelia’s dependence adapts to the changes in the play, it can be seen that Ophelia is dependent on the men in her life, and when they are removed from her as per the events of the play, she cannot adapt to guide herself.
Surfing has come a long way since it was first conceived (roughly 1500 years ago). From the Polynesian “watermen” and Hawaiian Kings, to the European takeover in Hawaii and surfing's American debut in the early twentieth century and all the way through present day, surfing has had a rich history. Over the decades, surfing has fit in to a number of roles in society, but whether we surfers are seen as beach-bums or heroes (as of late), we still surf only because we love it, because the ocean’s calls us, because nothing else on this planet can create the sensation felt by riding a wave.

The woman’s struggle for equality has been a long, hard process since the 1850’s and still persists into modern times. Women were brave enough to branch away from the societal norm of being a submissive female. Unfortunately, they were often ridiculed for their actions or dismissed (Donnaway). Although African American women would have an even tougher battle ahead of them. An African American female born into slavery around 1797, Sojourner Truth fought for the cause and made a lasting impact as an activist. (Butler). In 1851 Truth made a huge impact on the African American woman’s struggle with her speech entitled, “Ain 't I a Woman?” by describing her own struggle in a way that also explained all of their struggles. The speech made
Dear Mr. Dinsmore, I understand that you are a busy man, so I will get directly to the point. I am writing this letter to request for the removal of Katie Hopkins’ outrageous article, entitled: “Rescue boats? I'd use gunships to stop migrants.” Although I admire the masterful use of emotive language, figurative language and, description that make anyone who reads work feel repulsed, I feel strongly that her excessive use of offensive descriptions and the message implied in this article are not something that should be published. Incredibly, Katie Hopkins, in conjunction with numerous other offensive and indeed racist statements, actually implies that Syrian migrant are vermin.
In 1977 Irene Pepperberg, a recent graduate of Harvard University, did something very bold. At a time when animals still were considered automatons, she set out to find what was on another creature’s mind by talking to it. She brought a one-year-old African gray parrot she named Alex into her lab to teach him to reproduce the sounds of the English language. “I thought if he learned to communicate, I could ask him questions about how he sees the world.”

Bethany Hamilton is an example of dealing with change in an optimistic way. In October 2003, Bethany was attacked by a shark while out surfing in Tunnels beach, Hawaii. Without warning, a Tiger shark attacked her surfboard, dragging her back and forth and then disappearing into the ocean. Bethany was able to compose herself to use her right arm to swim back to the shore. She was later taken to hospital with severe injuries, where her left arm was amputated. She came through her recovery with things that were important to her, such as her family and her Christian faith. Despite the trauma of the incident, Hamilton was determined to return to surfing. Just 10 weeks after the accident, she returned to the ocean and went surfing again. She adjusted to the change by using a custom made surfboard and changing her surfing style. Bethany taught herself to surf with only one arm and she also began surfing competitively in competitions again. Hamilton claims that the loss of her arm was a blessing in disguise.
