In the United States, we have a huge problem with bee health. They are dying at alarming rates and every time we think we have found a new breakthrough in science, we see the numbers of bee deaths continue to fall in what some call biblical proportions. The two biggest arguments, or reasons, that this is happening is Colony collapse disorder and the use of insecticides and pesticides. Which can also be one and the same because some say CCD is the outcome of over using these neonicotinoids. The reason why this is such a big problem for me, and should be a huge problem for anyone who eats anything grown in the united states, is because bees are responsible for pollinating over fifty percent of US crops (30% world crops). As well as 90% of our wild plants. While other countries are having the same issues with bee deaths, it is not as bad as the United States. I really got into this assignment and found two huge pieces of information, one from CqPress, and the other EBSCOhost. I read every word and learned a lot more than I already knew. I also did additional research on every author to see if they were knowledgeable, or qualified to be talking about this topic. As far as the other resources are concerned, they are much smaller. However, I chose them because the information that they provided was important and different. Such as, one offering information on the kinds of plants you can grow year-round that provide pollen for bees. What do you think when you think of bees? I think of honey, pollination, and soon, new life. According to Walt D. Osborne, “Bees are vital for the pollination of more than 90 fruit and vegetable crops worldwide, including almonds, peaches, soybeans, apples, pears, cherries, raspberries, blackberries, cranberries, watermelons, cantaloupes, cucumbers, and strawberries,” (Osborne 9-11) but each year a large percent of hives have vanished due to many different factors such as stress. Most people would declare that the average honey bee is insufficiently important to the world because bees are pests to home owners everywhere, but bees are extremely important to earths’ survival than any other pollinator in the world; they help pollinate most of the world’s agriculture; yet in the recent years bee populations have plummeted rapidly. I am writing this paper to create awareness that the agricultural society ought to stop or lessen the spraying of pesticides/ insecticides on crops, unnatural diets and overcrowding in the hives.

On the contrary, President Obama “unveiled a plan aimed at stopping the rapid decline in bee and butterfly populations” (“On May 19”). His plans are to reduce the death rate of bees which in turn will help out the agricultural production. He also plans to clear land in order to give the bees a bigger environment in which to repopulation and will ensure that no bees are harmed in the process (“On May 19”). The president sees the devastation that the decline could cause and is trying to combat the issue. To most, the honeybee can be an annoying insect that has a powerful sting. Yet, the honeybee is so much more than just another insect. The honeybee is arguably the most vital component in the development of our food crops. With roughly 90 percent of our food crops dependent on the pollination of our honeybees, our food system, agricultural development, and diet rest on the work and well being of these buzzing insects. Unfortunately, since 2006 there has been a major decline in the population of honeybees, and has gotten progressively worse because of colony collapse disorder. The first reported increase of CCD was documented in November 2006 in Florida. By February 2007, several states began reporting major losses associated with CCD, ranging from 30% to 90%. A little over a half decade later in 2012 the attention paid towards CCD has grown substantially with more research being done as CCD continues to get worse. The main culprit for CCD, as research has suggested, is the use of pesticides on our food crops. With major corporations such as Bayer making millions and millions of dollars in profit each year in the distribution of pesticides, it is no wonder that nothing is being done to stop this practice despite evidence linking the use of pesticides and the drastic deterioration of the health of honeybees. With the continuation of the use of deadly pesticides and the vital role bees play in the pollination and development of our food crops, both the environment and our economy will be effected directly and face the potential for catastrophic results.
What can we actively take part in to stop the collapse of bee colonies? Bees are such a vital part of our everyday agriculture production, however, colonies are diminishing before our eyes. Colony Collapse Disorder is a massive decrease of bees in hives and it is greatly affecting our crops because bees are not distributing the necessary amount of pollen to crops in order for them to grow the maximum, most nutritious produce possible. There are many solutions that may help CCD, such as banning neonics, urban beekeeping, and interbreeding honey bees with African killer bees. The most effective way to decrease CCD is by interbreeding honey bees with a stronger specie of bees labeled African killer bees.

In my class we were asked to pick an issue to research about, so I chose colony collapse disorder because I believe this an overlooked epidemic. Much of the food we eat is dependent on honey bees for pollination. Our ecosystem depends on the survival of the honey bee. If this trend continues to spiral downward, honey bees will disappear from the world. In Europe and even in China honeybee populations are decreasing. This has an impact on everyone in the market. It effects how they food gets to the dinner table and how much it cost to put it there.
