Bad Children Yelling, crying, not paying attention, not doing a task properly, these are only some of the characteristics that are used to define a bad kid in society, but they are wrong. Kids cannot be judged based on actions that they cannot control; doing so will cause negative consequences in their future. When a child is labeled a “bad kid” it is hard for them to step out of that category and is basically being sentenced to being that stereotype for the rest of their child hood. Children are easily influenced and when society keeps telling a kid that they are not good they are bound to believe it even if the reason why they are being labeled bad is for something they cannot control. Majority of those kids were suffering from undiagnosed emotional distress, mental or physical delays and the negative connotation of what they were going through only added to the problem. Imagine being a child and not being able to focus in class. No matter how much effort was put into trying to focus, giving every bit of energy to trying to complete the task but just not being able to, to make it worse, no one acknowledges the effort that is put in to focusing, the reward is being categorized as a bad kid. That would discourage an adult from trying to do better even more a child, so why was it being done. Some of them could not help getting distracted or just did not understand what the teacher expected. Schools are now doing their best to improve their teaching strategies and the main reason why is because “no two kids are alike, not in their behavior, in their potential to learn, or in the way they will respond to a particular instructional approach” (Smith). With the education system doing their part to help kids instead of stamping them as a bad kid and disregarding them in the class room a better understanding of what a bad kid is not has come to life. If a kid who can fully comprehend what he is doing and is choosing to do the bad thing with sheer disregard of the consequences of his or her actions is a bad kid. Demeanor wise bad kids and good kids have plenty in common. When a child is bad, adults need to teach them what is acceptable and what is not, “if your child does not know a good behavior, he or she is likely to return to the bad behavior” (“What You Can Do to Change Your Child’s Behavior”). Families may consider their kids, bad kids if the child’s behavior “doesn’t match the expectations of the family” (“What You Can Do to Change Your Child’s Behavior”). There are many causes on why a child or teenager may misbehave. There could be issues at home, with family, other kids, peer pressure, and the list goes on. This can affect family, friends and their own lives in a negative way. “Understanding why children engage in bad behavior is critical to curbing it”, illustrates Harvey Karp, M.D, a pediatrician and author of the book and DVD “The Happiest Toddler On The Block”. In that case, there is a lot to be learned about the cause of misbehavior.
Initially, I define the two concepts of mistaken behavior and misbehavior, the first as an error in judgment and action made in the process of learning life skills. Mistaken behaviors occur at three levels which are: experimentation, socially influenced, and strong unmet needs. Teachers who use guidance see self-ruled life skills as difficult to learn, and they recognize that children are just at the beginning stages of a lifelong process of learning these skills. In the process of learning any difficult skill, children, like all of us, make mistakes. These teachers recognize that when children experiences conflicts it is because they have not yet developed the cognitive and emotional resources for more mature responses. The second concept being misbehavior is the conventional term applied to conflicts that the child is involved in, resulting in consequences that often include punishment and the internalization of a negative label such a “naughty”. The complexity of teaching self-ruled life skills leads some adults to the misconception that young children know how to behave, they just choose to misbehave. When conflicts occur, teacher who focus on misbehavior tend to label the child’s character and attempt to shame the child into better behavior.
They will only give “I said so answers” when a child asks why some rules are made. For instance, they don’t not don’t explain why going to neighbors house is not a good idea, but only insist because they said so. As a result, kids always struggle with moral reasoning. They are unable to tell how their behavior may affect others or process why doing something is unsafe.
There are many different opinions on the topic when do kids become adults. There are reasons to believe it has to do with maturity, age, or when they become completely independent. It has been researched that individuals’ brains develop differently at different ages/ at different times in their life. Overall, I believe that kids become adults when they reach the age of 18 due to this age group getting different freedoms, living on their own, and having to prepare themselves by having bigger responsibilities.
Kids in general learn from the people in their environment. If they see something good that someone else does, they too will do the same thing. They are not able to control the way they think yet because their cognitive learning skills aren’t as strong as they are when you become an adult. If a child sees someone doing something bad instead of good, the same reaction as the first example will take place and that child will exhibit bad behavior. However, the most clear and abundant effect of childhood trauma appeared to be behavioral problems. This was also the issue that often got covered up the most with “he/she is just a bad kid.” Like what was mentioned before, no kid is a bad kid. However, because the behavioral problems are what normally catches everybody’s eyes its normally what is caught first. Then you have the learning and emotional problems. Many people will often say that the child is slow or that they are sensitive, but many times there is so much more to the problem. There is a much larger problem lying in the background that often causes all the rest of the problems and it is not something that can just be brushed away with words like “lazy, slow, and sensitive.” The main problem must be directed head on that way we can potentially stop these negative effects and labeling that come from childhood

Around the world hundreds of thousands of kids are being beaten and sexually assaulted, however many people do not understand just how many kids are going home, if they even have a home, afraid for their life. One out of every five girls are a victim of abuse, and one in every eight boys are a victim of abuse (David Finkelhor). Abuse does not just stop at the bruise of the child, the pain on the surface is what we can see and is all we think the child is going through. However fear can last months, years, or even a life time, and can lead to life threating problems even as they become an adult. The children that get abused are not just living their life in fear but they no longer have a chance to be a child anymore, because of this; people that commit the crimes of physical and sexual abuse should have a greater punishment, because no child deserves to not have a childhood as a result of another person’s actions. Currently in the United States, a punishment could last one year up to twenty years in prison depending on the state, how old the child is, and how much damage has been done (Sandra Norman-Eady). However, they do not account for any mental damage to the child, just by the amount of physical damage.
