The use of animals in research has created a diverse range of attitudes, as some individuals support the use of animal testing and others are against it. Sometimes people do not have enough background knowledge on this topic to be involved in a discussion. Animal testing dates back to around 400 years ago, when one of the first famous researchers William Harvey was curious to discover how blood circulates around the body. The modern era of animal testing began around 150 years ago, although the conditions were quite different; the animals suffered severely as there were no anesthetics (Understanding Animal Research 2013). Animal testing has contributed to many lifesaving cures and treatments. The Government of Australia’s Animal Welfare Committee …show more content…
Recent developments and breakthroughs on animal testing have changed the way society now lives (Malin 2014). In the 1910s blood transfusions were discovered, blood transfusions can save a patient’s life and limit severe blood loss during surgery, bunny rabbits were tested on in order for the discovery. In the 1930s anesthetics were discovered while testing on guinea pigs, an anesthetic is an injection, which causes the loss of sensation and pain. In the 2000s the cervical cancer vaccine was introduced, cervical cancer is a nasty type of cancer that is usually incurable when diagnosed (Malin 2014). A survey put forward by Malin (2014) has stated, critically ill patients suffering from chronic diseases who are in need of medical support or breakthroughs show a positive stance towards animal testing, comparing to the general public who are against it. The patients that were interviewed stated that they have had great improvements in their health due to scientific progress on animal testing, but at the same time there have been many failures, animal testing has caused to patients (Malin 2014). Malin (2014) states that patients with chronic diseases are more willing to sacrifice themselves to test possible breakthroughs in …show more content…
Society is now beginning to see the positive impacts of medical research on animals. These impacts include, medical breakthroughs and cures for diseases (Corwin 1999). However, as Corwin (1999) states there is still concern for animal testing, woman are more likely to express concern for animal research than men. Suggesting gender comes into consideration with beliefs relating to animals in research. Corwin (1999) states that men are more likely to support the use of animal testing than women do, as men lack affection. Comparing to women, they consistently express affection towards animals and concern for ethical relations (Corwin 1999). This research put forward by Corwin (1999) relates to the previous research by Schuppli (2014), as they both state women are affectionate compared to
The information that animals have provided scientists over the past decades has changed society, and is still changing society for the better. Millions of lives have been saved with the use of animal testing and many more will be saved with continued research. However, there are many who dismiss this monumental achievement completely and oppose the use of animals in laboratory research. Though many find this practice to be
Point of view: Web. 14 February 2016. The article provides specific examples of illnesses and diseases which have been cured by animal testing that both humans and animals have benefitted from. This supports my topic of animal experiments being used for medical advancements. Pointing out that law often requires that products be tested before being sold to the public, George and Wagner additionally help prove my claim that product testing is a purpose of animal experimentation.
Testing animals is used to develop medical treatments, determine the toxicity of medicinal drugs, check the safety of products intended for human use, and other biomedical, commercial, and healthcare roles. The earliest recordings of animal studies date back to Aristotle, who discovered the anatomical differences among animals by analyzing them (Introduction). Advocates of animal testing say that it has enabled the growth of numerous medical advancements, tests to see if new products are save for mankind, acquisition of new scientific knowledge, and because it is accurate (B). Opponents of animal testing say that it is cruel and inhumane to try out on animals, many animals die from the animal testing, it’s unethical, animals don’t have a say in it, the accuracy is in question because they are testing animals and not humans, and the toll of animal testing is high (B). Through the pros and cons of everything, it is bad to test animals because animals are very different from human beings and thus make poor test subjects and are unreliable, the cost and upkeep of it is expensive, and because there are alternatives to animal testi...
Animals are used as a part of experimentations in order to accomplish new openings. A few individuals think that it is satisfactory, while others contend that it is not moral to sacrifice animals for science. Estimated, that fifty to one hundred million of animals are used for tests in the world. Despite the significance of experiments, the quantity of animals and purpose of research are not under any control. Animals testing should be banned under a few circumstances; we can enhance the situation by using alternative ways such as replacement, reduction, and refinement according to International Society for Applied Ethology.
Law and Animal Experimentation: A Critical Primer,” the author, Stephen Latham, begins his writing with expressing his views and thoughts on the reform needed to benefit animals while being experimented on. Latham describes the current system as being majorly flawed and having many gaps that could be completely modified to improve the current system in reference to the United States animal testing laws, standards, and regulations. Latham argues that “Even proponents of medical research on animals can see obvious ways in which the regulatory structure could be changed to benefit animals” (S35). Furthermore, the author achieves the purpose of stating his views while justifying himself in the attempt of achieving rational reform extremely well. Latham accomplished his purpose thoroughly because he provides detailed evidence and description of that evidence while explaining and supporting his thoughts of reform relating to the subject of animal
According to the California Biomedical Research Association, almost every medical advancement in the last 100 years is a direct result of animal testing and research. The use of animals has become standard procedure in a wide range of testing and experimentation, including product toxicity testing, biomedical and veterinary experiments, drug development and testing, and education. Major advancements in treating and understanding chronic conditions such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, malaria, and tuberculosis, have been achieved due to animal research. Also, the development of pacemakers, cardiac valve substitutes, and anesthetics are also direct results of the testing and observation of animals. On the other hand, many people believe that animal testing is cruel and inhumane. In many laboratories animals are subjected to force feeding, food and water deprivation, physical restraints, and infliction of pain. Because the animals cannot protect themselves, many people argue that exploiting animals to better the lives of humans is wrong and should not be permitted.
Every year approximately 100 million animals are killed as a part of scientific research in the United States alone. Animal testing is a highly controversial practice in the modern world. There are records of animals being used in biological and medicinal research as far back as 384 BCE with the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle. Many people believe animal testing is unethical as it is bringing harm to animals in order to benefit humans. Ever since the beginning of this practice, animal testing has been used for a variety of purposes, all of which are inhumane and unethical.
Animal testing is a controversial topic with two main sides of the argument. The side apposing animal testing states it is unethical and inhumane; that animals have a right to choose where and how they live instead of being subjected to experiments. The view is that all living organism have a right of freedom; it is a right, not a privilege. The side for animal testing thinks that it should continue, without animal testing there would be fewer medical and scientific breakthroughs. This side states that the outcome is worth the investment of testing on animals. The argument surrounding animal testing is older than the United States of America, dating back to the 1650’s when Edmund O’Meara stated that vivisection, the dissection of live animals, is an unnatural act. Although this is one of the first major oppositions to animal testing, animal testing was being practiced for millennia beforehand. There are two sides apposing each other in the argument of animal testing, and the argument is one of the oldest arguments still being debated today.
Hundreds and millions of animals are killed everyday due to animal testing. The number of animal deaths in labs have halved since the 1970’s. An animal dies in a Canadian lab every 16 seconds! The contemporary scale of animal deaths due to animal testing is unacceptable! 17-22 million animals are tested on each year and at least half are put to death. 2.5 million animals are killed due to animal testing at the Great Britain Zoo every year. Animal testing essentially involves harming or killing the animals, every year so many innocent animals are put to death on behalf of our a...
Animals have held an important spot in many of our lives. Some people look at animals as companions and others see them as a means of experimental research and medical advancement. With the interest to gain knowledge, physicians have dissected animals. The ethics of animal testing have always been questioned because humans do not want to think of animals on the same level as humans. Incapable of our thinking and unable to speak, animals do not deserve to be tested on by products and be conducted in experiments for our scientific improvement. Experimentation on animals is cruel, unfair, and does not have enough beneficial results to consider it essential.
Hundreds of millions of animals die every year from animal testing in the United States. Innocent animals are used everyday in laboratories for biology advancements, medical training, curiosity-driven experimentation, and chemical, drug, food, and cosmetic testing. They are used to provide information to make better products that are safe for human use. Although animal experimentation has some benefits, the negatives outweigh the positives. Animal testing is killing off innocent beings for the possible human benefit, and with modern technology, there are alternative ways to test products that leave animals unharmed.
Save a Life Every year millions of animals suffer from animal testing. These animals suffer cruel abuse at the hands of humans, the very hands that are suppose to be compassionate and be their voice. These animals are treated like trash and disposed of when testing is complete or die from the cruel nature of the test. It is time to take a stand against animal experiments and tests, it has been proven to have no benefit to humans and there are alternatives that are less costly and do not require inhumane acts of cruelty on animals.
Imagine walking into your home and seeing a mouse roaming around, your immediate thought is to get rid of it. You are either going to kill or put it outside, and then it will be a chain reaction. The animals you would kill in a heartbeat to save your home or because they're disgusting could save millions of lives. I am not happy that we have to test on animals just to make sure we get healthy. I understand that we need to test on animals, because it is unethical to test give experimental drugs on humans. Yes experimenting on humans would give you the most accurate representation of how a drug would work in a human body. Testing of experimental drugs can lead to more deaths, when all we are doing is trying to save lives.
For many years there has been controversy whether or not animals should be tested on between scientists and animal right supporters. It is very debatable if animals should be tested on when a cure for a disease could be found from testing on animals. From my own personal view I have a huge heart for animals, but if we can not find other alternatives, and is possible we can find cures for diseases, then animals may be used for research, but only for medical reasons.
For many years now, animals have been used for testing and experimentation. Many organizations like PETA and the ARF (Animal Rescue Foundation) strongly oppose the topic of animals being experimented on. Many people are against animal testing as a whole because not only does it harm animals, but many times they may be killed. There have been many countless years and protests against testing, and they deserved to be heard and listened to. People have begun to realize that not only does animal testing harm and kill animals every year; it has been pretty much useless.
