On paper a test to administer to high school seniors to graduate seems like a great idea, but in reality it is not. As I have entered into my senior year of high school, I have had a surprisingly abundant amount of work thrown at me. Senior year has only just begun, and I have already had to start applying to colleges, studying for both the SAT and the ACT, and keeping up with regular homework. If seniors were given another test to take to graduate we would only be forced to study more. Senior year is hard enough trying to figure out how to take on more adult responsibilities in a few short months with application deadlines, scholarship finding, and trying to decide what high school seniors finally want to be when we grow up. Most students like myself already have a tough workload with having those last AP classes, maintaining a high enough GPA to scrap by, rushing to make sure SAT and ACT scores reflect our intelligence enough and the biggest stressor of all waiting around to hear which colleges sent acceptance letters. I know as a senior I’ve done my time. I do not want to do any extra work that has no correlation to earning my diploma because I have just spent three other years breaking my back over mandatory standardized tests, mandatory core classes, mandatory attendance, all put in place to create a system to graduate. Senior year has been hyped up to be one of the best years of our lives. Seniors should not have to worry too much about our past but to look forward into our future through applying to colleges. We have worked too hard our first three years because in reality, colleges make decision on our first three years anyways. Yes keeping up grades, doing well on tests, continuing to go to school are still very important, but if you spend all of your time on school work then you will miss all the fun that is to be had in your last year of high school. On top of looking mostly at our first three years, in order to get into colleges almost all of them want an applicant to have taken the SAT or ACT. These tests show our level of intelligence and already are stressful enough to make sure we score high. For example the college admittance department at Ohio State will not meet all 10,000 applicants. It is easier to scan over the standardized application, look at their test scores and cumulative GPA, and maybe an essay if the applicant is lucky enough to have gotten to that stage.
Seniors have to make ourselves stand out and that's enough pressure. Having to take another standardized test to move onto the next level of schooling would also provide another wall for students that may not be the regular A+ student. Some students do not do well on standardized tests. Lots of students excel in only a one or two subjects so if they were forced to take a test on something they do not do well in then they are not going to do well. These students try their best to get to college and having another standardized test could crush their chances at getting out of any situation they may be in. The fact that high school’s could also be creating more problems for colleges by making yet another number for college admittance offices have to look at. Colleges all around the US and the world look at millions of applications. Yes - they do want great students to come to their colleges, but they do not want high school’s to bump up the amount of numbers that colleges have to look at to make decisions. So in conclusion high schools seniors should not be made to take a standardized graduation test simply because of the fact that their is simply too much to do in your last year of high
school.
Students simply do not care about their results on standardized tests. Many students either “Christmas Tree” (pick random answers, named because people sometimes make shapes) or just select one answer and continue with the same answer the entire way down (Tests that count). One time I heard a teacher at my old high school tell a new teacher that their job is to teach to the test and nothing else. I did not really know what she meant, but I knew something about what she said sounded very wrong. I thought why are they just teaching us how to pass the test instead of just teaching us what we need to know? Later I found out that whether or not I graduate depends on passing the test. The idea of standardized testing to say whether or not students graduate is a bad one. Not just bad for schools, principals, and teachers, but it can mean the end of a student’s future before it begins. That means not only does schools suffer, but everyone in our communities, states, and country suffers. It used to be that students had to take standardized tests every year. The results of these tests said what school districts would get more money or less money for the next school year. And it would also tell schools and teachers if some students needed to be put into higher level programs such as gifted and talented or advanced placement courses or if they were having problems and should be put in special education.
After graduation of my high school, I’ve decided not to attend college. I spent over three months preparing for college admissions. Over three months of studying for the SAT and writing essays for colleges. But, all this hard work was blown away in just a week. The week before the May 1st, the decision day, I had made my decision not to attend college. I have decided to return to my country and start working. Of course, there was a strong disagreement from my parents, but I didn’t hesitate. For the past years, I have worked in many different kinds of places and I have faced the true reality. This made me want to attend college and brought me to Concordia College.
After high school, there are many different opportunities that open up for everyone. Some people have the chance to go to a prestigious college right after they are done with their high school career. Others might just want a break from school and possibly take a year off. There are no right or wrong answers to what someone does after they finish high school. It all depends on the person's situation or what they feel is best for them. However, there may be some more benefits to taking a year off than going straight to college.
College is thought of as what every parent wants for their child, so they can go off andmake something of themselves. For the most part, this is true. Specifically the writers Jack London in The Law Of Life, Stephen Crane The Open Boat and Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Fin. Each explores the relationship between humans and nature but with slightly different methods. Mark Twain uses nature in a realistic way, Jack London in a naturalistic way and Stephen Crane constitutes a combination of both.
Every day, more and more attempts of banning books and taking away the rights of our First Amendment get violated. The challenging of a book is the attempt to remove or restrict materials, and the banning is the removal of these materials. I believe that books should not be banned for these reasons.
Sometimes students question themselves if college is really worth it? That question has many answers that only a student can answer and decide for him or herself. For some students college can have a positive, life-long outcome. However, there are many obstacles when it comes to college. A student has to be very dedicated in school, and they have to know how to manage their personal life, school and work. College seems like it has more negative effects than it does positive for some people. For the following reasons college is not worth the cost because it is very difficult to find jobs after graduating or they find a job that is not in their field, some students who are not academically prepared wind up dropping out of school and wasting their money and some students struggle to balance school life, personal life and work life. As a result these students end up dropping out of school.

There comes a time in someone’s life when they must get a job to support themselves or their family. For those who don’t have a college degree, a minimum wage job is the way to go. A federal minimum wage is the lowest hourly, daily or monthly compensation that employers may legally pay to workers. However if minimum wage is so low that someone can barely make an income, to support themselves or a family. Minimum wage is based on federal decisions. Some states minimum wage is more than the next. For example Florida’s is $7. 79 while Connecticut’s is $8.25 per hour. Georgia has the lowest minimum wage which is $5.15. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. Minimum wage should be increased because poverty will be reduced, it will be good for economic recovery, and provide more for families. However minimum wage raises are opposed by those who believe it will create more unemployment.
As a senior in high school, I have had more than enough exposure to standardized tests. The ACT, PSAT, ITBS, and countless others have tracked my scholastic progress for the last nine years. Each test takes weeks of preparation for just a few hours of actual test taking. Yet these tests only measure basic subjects such as math, science, and English. What these tests fail to track is students’ abilities to problem solve, empathize, and be honest. Skills that are vital parts of a functioning society. Creating a test that treats the student as an individual would yield better results, and would create a better learning experience for all.
Almost every high school student will take it: the standardized test. Tests like the SAT and ACT are used to measure how well a student will do in his or her college life, but these tests are not always accurate. There are many different types of students and most of the high scores and low scores correlate to certain groups of students which is why some argue these tests are biased. Standardized tests, especially the ones that measure college success, are not as effective at ranking a student’s academic ability as many people believe. Standardized tests prevent students from proper learning in the classroom and they cannot equally measure every kind of student’s intelligence.
This is one the biggest stress level that a high school student will go through in their junior and senior year. While taking the test students know that if they do not get a certain score on the SAT or ACT, they would not get into college or university they want. Having that state mind is not healthy for young teenagers. According to Where College Admissions Went Wrong, “Students today still spend months and sometimes even years of grueling work to secure a spot, spending thousands on test prep” (Wong Atlantic). Having high school students to spend money for tutors to do better on the test is ridiculous because some student still would not do well. Also with low income students are not able require that type of help to may get a small amount of help. Universities are trying to downgrade their choices or limiting their choices by requiring high school students to get certain score. In today’s society, most of students are not getting accepted because they have high G.P.A but a low standardize test score. Students required both to be high because it is competitive and puts a lot a pressure to on them. For example, Where College Admissions Went Wrong stated, “The intense competition, it fuels undermines students’ well-being; pressures applicants to fine-tune their test-taking skills and inflate their resumes; and distorts the purpose of higher education” (Wong Atlantic). Standardize test give away the higher education to student and defeating the purpose that education is to gain knowledge, not for being a competitive sport. There are colleges and universities that do not have SAT and ACT as required for admission. What makes a good person good? According to WikiHow, "We should learn to define our own morals ourselves. One of the simplest ways to do so is to love others, and treat them as you would like to be treated. Try to think of others before yourself. Even doing small things daily will greatly enrich and improve your life, and the lives of others around you." This quote shows us what we need to do in order to be what society thinks as, “good". In order to be a good person, you have to do good and moral things in your society consistently. However people might think that by doing one good thing once in a while will automatically make you a “good person”, but in reality it doesn’t.

In my sophomore year of high school, many subjects have weakened my motivation to learn. For example, AP World History was great until the exam came into place. It was enjoyable learning about history all over the world, but then we had to spend many weeks preparing for the standardized test. It was terrible because we were cramming everything we learned to perform well on the test and to pass the requirement for AP credit.
