This month when everyone is reflecting on the time their father taught them how to fish or how he worried when they went to prom, a few thousand kids will never know what these memories are like because their dad is in jail for a plant. A plant that is recreationally legal in four states and our Nation’s Capitol, a plant that has been medically proven by government patents (6630507) and by many patients across the nation that need it to help their genetics, a plant as diverse as an apple. Not only does it contain natural medicinal value, it also substitutes non-biodegradable plastics, cotton, and paper. Thousands of fathers sit behind bars for this super plant, and this month we would like to honour a few close to our heart. One of the longest …show more content…
Lance had a detention hearing on May 10th, which could have freed him until his sentencing, but despite a rally and a courtroom full of supporters, the judge denied his release, claiming he’s a flight risk. One of the fucked up things about our judicial system, was how Vince Lombardi mentioned things that had nothing to do with evidence actually presented during the trial. One thing wrongly presented by the prosecution was how Lance was operating a “so called” medical dispensary, which wouldn’t be legal under current law, which was not the case since the hearing was in May and the law didn’t take effect until June. During his trial, they did not prove he broke any current state laws. His new attorney did point out the present ongoings with the 9th district and the pending decision for the prosecution of medical marijuana cases in medical states. Section 538 states, no federal funds will be used in the prosecution of medical marijuana facilities. Even this didn’t deter Prosecutor Vince Lombardi, who simply said we can revisit it then, clearly a man with no forethought with his place in history. Lance needs your help as he is scheduled for sentencing on June 3rd at 10:30. He needs as many people as possible to come to his hearing and stand up for him in the courtroom. Another freedom rally is scheduled before the hearing, so show up at 9:00 with your “Free Lance” signs! He is facing 5-60 years, however, prosecutor is recommending 10. Lance needs your support, he needs you to write a letter to Judge Leighton, asking him to be lenient on his sentence. You can e-mail your letter or questions to psm103_17@yahoo.com. If you would like to send Lance some mail to help cheer him up, his address is: Lance Gloor #44270-086, FDC SEATAC PO Box 13900, Seattle, WA

On the typical day, over 90 people will die at the hand of opioid abuse in America alone (National). In fact, as of 2014, nearly 2 million Americans were dependent and abusing opioids. The Opioid Crisis has affected America and its citizens in various ways, including health policy, health care, and the life in populous areas. Due to the mass dependence and mortality, the crisis has become an issue that must be resolved in all aspects.
Every year, 2.6 million people in the United States suffer from opioid abuse and of that 2.6 million, 276,000 are adolescents, and this problem is only escalating. An individual’s physical and emotional health suffer as well as their personal lives as they lose employment, friends, family, and hope. Opioid addiction begins with the addictive aspects of the drug. People easily become hooked on the relieving effects of the opioids and suffer withdrawal symptoms if they stop using the drug completely because their nerve cells become accustomed to the drug and have difficulty functioning without it; yet the addiction to the drug is only one aspect to the complex problem. The stigma about opioid addiction has wide-reaching negative effects as it
Legalization of marijuana in the United States has received much attention and controversy in recent months. The federal government outlaws the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes despite proven research studies that have discovered the plant’s potential to treat the lives of many Americans affected by disease and chronic pain. Medicinal use of the marijuana plant dates back to 2700 B.C. in China. Emperor Shen Nung discovered its’ healing properties and recommended marijuana for a variety of ailments (Mack and Joy 14). Today bias views and law plague the advancement of marijuana in present day medicine. Strict approval processes are limiting the research necessary for such advancements (Medical Marijuana Research News). Despite federal and state illegalization, twenty-one states over the past decade have made advances to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes (“State Medical Marijuana Laws”) . It is time for Texas to acknowledge the benefits and eliminate the stigma surrounding medicinal marijuana. Medical marijuana should be legalized in Texas because of its’ medicinal benefits associated with many chronic diseases and the potential revenue the state could benefit from during this time of recession.
Almost everybody on Long Island, and probably all around the world, has been prescribed a drug by a doctor before— whether it was to knock out a nasty virus, or relieve pain post injury or surgery. However, what many people don’t realize is that these drugs can have highly addictive qualities, and more and more people are becoming hooked, specifically teenagers. But when does harmlessly taking a prescription drug to alleviate pain take the turn into the downward spiral of abuse? The answer to that question would be when the user begins taking the drug for the “high” or good feelings brought along with it—certainly not what it was prescribed for (1). The amount of teens that abuse prescription medications has been rapidly increasing in recent
A steep rise in the past ten years is shown in the diagnoses and medicating childhood disorders and more specifically bipolar disorder. An initial dose is given to a child to stabilize a psychological disorder. I turn this one drug cause the need for more drugs due to side effects. New medications are then used in order to reduce new side effects. The problem is the use of numerous medications in childhood diagnosed bipolar disorder. Many issues arise due to a lack of research on childhood medication use by the FDA, difficulty in proper diagnoses of bipolar disorder, and over medicating children. The video, “The Medicated Child”, explains the many issues faced in proper diagnoses of childhood mental illness and proper treatment to include medications.
Ever since marijuana’s introduction to the United States of America in 1611, controversy of the use and legalization of the claimed-to-be Schedule I drug spread around the nation. While few selective states currently allow marijuana’s production and distribution, the remaining states still skepticize the harmlessness and usefulness of this particular drug; therefore, it remains illegal in the majority of the nation. The government officials and citizens of the opposing states believe the drug creates a threat to citizens due to its “overly-harmful” effects mentally and physically and offers no alternate purposes but creating troublesome addicts hazardous to society; however, they are rather misinformed about marijuana’s abilities. While marijuana has a small amount of negligible effects to its users, the herbal drug more importantly has remarkable health benefits, and legalizing one of the oldest and most commonly known drugs would redirect America’s future with the advantages outweighing the disadvantages.
In the United States, many would believe that all individuals have a right to health care. These citizens believe that everyone should have access to health care and that everyone should have an equal opportunity to get the care they need for themselves and their family. The United States of America has been built with many documents that can be interpreted to support the belief that health care should be a right for everyone.
A pregnant women diagnosed with cancer is a very rare case in medicine. Yet, this case still prevents itself in the field of medicine. Approximately, 1 in 1000 pregnant women are affected by cancer (“Cancer During Pregnancy”). Conflicts that pin maternal health versus fetal health have come to an interesting point in our society. The pregnant woman legally has the right to accept treatment that will harm the unborn child. Yet, it becomes a moral issue whether she owes it to her unborn child to refuse treatment in order to avoid fetal harm and deliver a healthy child. For the sake of argument, this paper will predominantly deal with pregnant cancer patients that if they refused chemotherapy may die, but if they received chemotherapy in the hopes of curing or slowing the cancer, their unborn child would be born healthy. This document will argue that the woman has the right to accept and should accept chemotherapy
Engineers are developing new systems to use genetic information, sense small changes in the body, assess new drugs, and deliver vaccines.
The American Medical Association's Council on Scientific Affairs should be commended for its report, "Marijuana: Its HealthHazards and Therapeutic Potential." Not only does the report outline evidence of marijuana's potential harms, but it distinguishes this concern from the legitimate issue of marijuana's important medical benefits. All too often the hysteria that attends public debate over marijuana's social abuse compromises a clear appreciation for this critical distinction.
Psychiatric Interviews for Teaching by the University of Nottingham displays to the audience the process and the realities of a personal interview with the patients. The process begins with “taking the history,” in other words, finding out the patient’s history of the ongoing illness. During the interviews, one starts to realize whether or not the patient is aware of his/her sickness. The video for Mania and Psychosis, both males believed that they were not ill, on the other hand, the lady in Depression knew she was sick and wanted help from the doctor. The harsh realities are displayed upon the actual doctor and the patient themselves. For example: after seeing the three videos, the young man in Psychosis seemed normal to me; however, he believed that the secret service of England was after him. The young man is roughly two years older than I am. His demeanor presented a very
It’s impossible to fix a leaking faucet without fixing the pipes first. You can try to mop up the water, but the problem won’t go away until the leak is stopped at the source. Likewise, the current opioid epidemic that is taking over lives will not come to an end unless the source- unneeded opioid prescriptions for teens- is stopped. A plethora of teens receive prescriptions for minor injuries, but doctors over prescribing these medications can put teens on the road to a full blown addiction. The current opioid epidemic is a problem that plagues the lives of thousands of people every day, and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is taking steps to end the problem.
Today in this country nearly one in every four Americans suffers with some sort of mental illness. The thought of that can be shocking to some, but others may brush it off as just another statistic left aside for the next to worry over. But, few really take into consideration that a mental illness can become the source of reasoning behind so many horrible cases ranging from depression to murder to the worst things one can think of. A mental illness isn’t just a simple illness, there are varieties of illnesses that can affect a person, such as; anxiety disorders, depression, schizophrenia, OCD also known as obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, eating disorders, and the terrifying list continues with so much more than just these examples. Mental illnesses can become developed before birth, during adolescence, early adulthood and even be hereditarily developed. Away from the fact that anyone at any age can develop a mental disorder, the actions these disorders can drive one to do are horrendous. Besides the outrageously mind boggling amount of undiagnosed people who live in the U.S. alone, most doctors do not even know how to identify many mental illnesses specifically for what they are. The kind of effects or reactions one can experience because of the specific illness can be agonizingly, horrific especially if ones doctor cannot specify the problem correctly. More research must be done to increase mental illness awareness and diagnose those who are struggling to live a normal life. Ways in which we can increase the awareness to help, and learn can actually be quite simple.
