As a kid growing up, I would watch movies about how parents would always say they have to save up money for their kids’ college education. I never thought about it much because I was still a kid myself, but now as a freshman in college, I understand why those parents had to start saving up money. College is not cheap at all. Depending on your major, you need a certain amount of years to graduate and get your degree. Some people are lucky to have financial aid they do not have to pay back, but what about those who have to pay tuition out of their own pocket? They must work multiple jobs to get that money, or even take out student loans. Some people don’t go to college because it’s a waste of their time and money so they’d rather not go. Making college “free” may seem impossible and “dumb” but there is a “possible” in impossible, and it is not dumb because there are many people out there who are serious about their education and their future. According to the article “The Case Against Free College” by Matt Bruenig, Bruenig states “Without a dramatic overhaul of how we understand student benefits, making college more or entirely free would most likely boost the wealth of college attendees without securing any important egalitarian gains.” He believes that our economy will gain nothing if college was a low cost or free. But on the other hand, there are so many good things that can benefit us as an economy. For example, if college was free and students had the ability to achieve their goals and they were able to use their brains to actually solve the missing puzzles such as helping to help find a cure for cancer. There are so many more benefits if college was free but we will never know unless we make it
