For the past year I have watched my younger sister struggle to support herself and her now 11 month old baby. She makes more than minimum wage. She has struggled to the point where she was evicted and now lives with me. I have also experienced struggling on low pay. When I was 18 I was kicked out of my family’s house, and I was only making $8 an hour. There were days where I had to choose between paying rent and getting my electricity shut off, just because I couldn’t work enough hours to pay all of my bills. It can be very scary to only make minimum wage and have to support yourself. There are changes that need to be made so that every person can live properly with any job.
In response to the Great Depression, the New Deal was a series of efforts put forth by Franklin D. Roosevelt during his first term as United States’ President. The Great Depression was a cataclysmic economic event starting in the late 1920s that had an international effect. Starting in 1929 the economy started to contract, but it wasn’t until Wall Street started to crash that the pace quickened and its effects were being felt worldwide. What followed was nearly a decade of high unemployment, extreme poverty, and an uncertainty that the economy would ever recover.
Unemployment is rising and the entire global economy is falling. The story has become all too common. If there is a negative direction available to follow, we're definitely taking advantage of the opportunity. Americans became too accustomed to the period of inflation through the 1990s, and the ongoing recession is affecting most everyone. The Big Three automakers (GM, Ford and Chrysler) have made massive cuts to their workforces, and the entire national job market has been upended. My personal life has been greatly distorted due to these events, after Delphi (contracted by GM) outsourced most of their jobs and shut down 21 of their 29 plants in the US. In previous years, anyone would be capable of earning a comfortable wage by working for GM right out of high school. Now that these jobs have disappeared, union wages are no longer available. Unemployed individuals are desperate and working for minimum wage, and are therefore required to drastically change their standards of living. My dad is working seventy hours a week, and we're still barely able to pay rent. The so-called “American dream” has been transformed for many. It was once a goal to obtain what you need to be happy, but it is now just being able to manage to find a job capable of supporting your family. The number of undocumented workers in the United States has increased since the rise of our economy. An undocumented worker is a person in a country, like the United States, without the right documents to be proven to be allowed in the country. Many reasons are blamed for the increase of these undocumented workers. Undocumented workers increased because the change in law of the United States made it impossible for foreign workers to go to the country (Zoltan). These laws made a chain of problems that the United States is still suffering today. One example of a problem is the decrease of American jobs. The problems of the United States caused by undocumented workers can be solved by supporting Mexico and other countries to make more jobs in their own countries, to reduce numbers of undocumented workers in the United States.
The living wage is more and more being called a movement because the current federal minimum wage laws does not provide enough money for an individual that works a full time job to be able to support a family. Making them feel like they should not have to raise a family in poverty. Thankfully, President Trump is defunding sanctuary cities, so I won’t spend time on this, however the amount of people on welfare is way too high. While creating more jobs should decrease the amount of people on welfare, this is still not enough. This is not politically correct to say, but there are a lot of lazy people in this country who don’t want to work, and who just want to live on welfare. There are two things that can help stop this, one is everyone most take a drug test every month before they are approved for welfare, and two is that you must show that you have an applied for a least six to eight jobs every month.
