GMOs? For or against? Did you know GMOs cause cancer? This is a relatively common and reoccurring statement that nowadays floods the media regarding GMOs. A statement which clearly represents the direction of people’s perception of GMOs today. GMOs has been around for nearly 50 years. It is something that has emerged itself within our lifestyles and become something that appear in our daily lives, whether it’s on the shelf in grocery shops or on your plate right know; GMOs can be found almost anywhere. However, although the production of GMOs have certainly increased over the years, opinions on it has differed. Some people have come to believe it is dangerous for our health, while other people has stated the exact opposite. Something that
has sparked many debates and discussions regarding the topic. Overlooking these discussions it has been quite clear what the main arguments are based upon. For instance the two most popular are ethics and agriculture. Two general topics with a lot to back them up. For the ethics argument, people have been divided. Manipulating and modifying certain aspects of genes have had both negative as well as positive thoughts. The negative side has stated things such as for example: If we have the right to modify and animal? And if yes, what superior right would that be? Who is it that say we can go against natural evolution? Is it really right to artificially change and animal/organism to our own benefit? While the positive side has stated that modifying the DNA is justifiable as long as we in a clear way strongly benefit from it. So basically this main argument has been hinging on whether altering DNA is right. Moving on to agriculture. Within the agricultural argument things like ending starvation and benefiting farmers have been discussed. The ending starvation part has been based upon the mass production of GMOs, and if we're able to produce more food we could possibly have a chance at ending starvation. Especially considering the amount that GMOs would provide, since we now would have a larger quantity of food that is both cheaper and better to produce. The against side has however stated that this mass production of GMOs could be dangerous, since we haven’t truly seen the long-term consequences of consumption of GMOs. Which could for example refer to this source which states that we don’t know future long term consequences of GMOs since they never have been properly tested. So we’ve heard people's opinion of GMOs, but what does a farmer’s perspective on the story? Well, in this source a farmer was interviewed with his thoughts regarding the topic. He stated that he had tried modified crops for his animals but they didn't seem to be attracted by it since they rather ate the conventional crops. This made him consider genetically modified wrong, since he from his own experience knew that the animals would only eat the modified crops if they were forced to. Something that led him to considerer GMOs morally wrong since it would only work if we went against the animals will, mentally breaking them. Something that led him to state the following when regarding his work for a GMO free production “I feel a moral and ethical responsibility to educate people about the subject. And also for the benefit of my granddaughter’s generation. I see so many people struggling to have kids or kids who have food allergies. We have to educate and motivate the masses.” So, do we have that right? Alteration of aspects of nature for our own benefit?

Iowan farmer Reg Clause suggests you may not in his column, “Say ‘no’ to GMO labeling.” Reminding readers that general election day has come, he attempts to convince us that a certain law should be voted against. The proposed legislation would mandate all foods that contain genetically modified organisms, also know as GMOs, to display a warning label on their packaging. Many people in the United States are repulsed by the process of creating GMOs, while some argue that GMOs can be used for agricultural advancements such as drought issues or nutritional deficiency. In an article entitled “We’re Having the Wrong Argument About GMOs” by Caitlin Dewey, she attempts to make her voice heard in the widely controversial argument about GMOs. In this article, she interviews McKay Jenkins, a journalist that has spent many years researching GMOs.
The term GM foods or GMO (genetically-modified organisms) is most commonly used to refer to crop plants created for human or animal consumption using the latest molecular biology techniques (Whitman, 2000). These plants have been modified in the laboratory to offer desired traits such as increased resistance to herbicides or improved nutritional content. Also, genetic engineering techniques have been applied to create plants with the exact desired trait very rapidly and accurately. For example, this is done by the geneticist isolating the gene responsible for drought tolerance and inserts it into another plant. The new genetically-modified plant will now have gained drought tolerance as well.
In this day and age Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) have become a topic of large interest in the media. GMOs are defined as an organism whose genetic structure has been altered by incorporating a gene that will express a desirable trait (Dresbach et. al 2013). Often times these traits that are selected are either beneficial to the consumer or producer. Currently, GMOs are being created at a higher rate than ever before and are being used in the foods that we eat. This has created a large amount of debate on local, national, and international levels about the safety of genetically modified foods to human health. There are many angles that have been taken from different groups about this issue. Some believe it is harmful to our health with one source stating that, “mice eating GMO corn had fewer and smaller babies (Jagelio 2013).” Without testing on humans how are we to know these harmful effects aren’t impacting our health and reproduction. Other groups see GMOs as being both beneficial and having no impact on human health. These individuals site that , “Since GMOs were introduced into the food supply almost 20 years ago, there has not been one documented case of any health problem in humans, not even so much as a sniffle, linked to GMOs (Entine 2013).” They have also found GMOs to be beneficial to human health. Dresbach et. al(2013) found, “The biotechnology of gene splicing allows for the opportunity of creating plants that will produce food that is more nutrient dense.” With so many different views that all cite different information about GMO’s impact on human well-being, the question remains how GMOs affect human health?
My first encounter with Genetically Modified Organisms or GMO’s had me not wanting to eat anything. I had an empty belly for a dramatic amount of three days because my mother had passed along her knowledge to me. Of course what she told me wasn’t much, just that they were bad and unnatural. After those three days passed I decided to forget about what I knew but not too long after that my Honors Biology teacher, Mr. Bradley, taught us more about Genetically Modified Organisms.
