Do you play a team sport? Such as football, soccer or baseball? Playing a team sport doesn’t just let you play something you like to do everyday but it also gives an incredible bond with your teammates and you guys become a family. Some people may disagree and say that team sports doesn’t help build character. In the following essay I will show you the pros and cons of why team sports is or isn’t a good thing. By the way did you know that even though some children are too shy to play team sports, team sports develops good character because it relieves stress and boosts a child’s confidence.

about that because when you play a team sport, you perform everything as a team and you don’t have to perform things solo. Another example that shows that some children are too shy to play sports is, Kids don’t like to work with other kids. in another article I read said that kids don’t know how to work well with other people and they can’t make new friends. They get too shy to even talk to new people. Even though some children are too shy to play sports, team sports develops good character because it relieves stress.
Kids go under stress and they don’t even realize it. Stress doesn’t necessarily have to do with school, it can be home problems, social problems and personal problems. Stress doesn’t only happen in kids, stress ranges from preschoolers to adult hood. Preschoolers stress about them being away from their parents while they’re at school. Another example that shows that it relieves stress, playing sports helps you relax, your stress seems to just melt away when you get distracted and you don’t have to worry about whatever is going on in your life. Now, you could also argue and say that playing sports will just add more to your plate when you have to stress about your personal issues and you also have to add on sports. yes, this is true but research says that most sports help relieve stress rather than cause it. If your child is too shy to play a sport then you shouldn’t not force them, It might just cause them to break down and have a hard time trying to deal with
it. Some people will argue and say team sports doesn’t help build good character it just makes you cocky and inconsiderate. Then, they might try to use examples like the professional football players that blow off money like crazy, or like Michael Vick who got caught dog fighting. A player's’ attitude doesn’t depend on him, it depends how how the coach shows them to be humble and how to be considerate of others. Another example that shows a confidence boost is that sports shows some morals for student athletes to follow. Children who play in team sports must have a good attitude, without a good attitude you become uncoachable and the coach won’t want to have you on the team. Fighting fear plays a huge role in being a team sport player, fear happens to be a major component that holds a lot of children back, it isn't always children it can be an adult as well. A coach must always appreciate a players hard work even if it may not be his best. Even though people have proved that team sports develops good character, there is still a couple of people who disagree. There was a college where two football players got into a fight in the locker room after practice. The fight led into one of the other guys getting his face broken into pieces. the result of that ended with the guy who caused the damages had to pay him $6,000 but he smiled and said it wasn’t a problem since he was considered “rich”. the coach wasn’t too worried about the rumble because he claimed that little fights always happen in the locker room. The coach stated “ little rumbles usually happens when the same player happens to make the same mistakes, and the whole team has to play for it.” In a way people considered it bullying and others considered it a “lesson learned”. Some professional athletes don’t have the greatest records either. Some not all a lot of pro athletes happen to work with charities and donate money to help out as much as they can. Some athletes don’t have time or room to screw up because they need to set a good example for all of their fans who are children. So it is clear that although some children are too shy to play sports, teams sports develops good character for two main reasons. Keener talks about how playing on a sports team as a child can teach the kid very important characteristics, like: teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship. Hawkins also argues that student-athletes are devoting 50 to 70 hours a week to sports and cannot handle a full-time academic course load during the sports season. The NCAA points out that graduation rates for all student-athletes are rising. Graduation rates among women student-athletes are around 80 percent for many sports and exceeds the rate for women students overall.
One of the many benefits of playing sports is the children will build character. Building character is important because with character they will obtain new friends and develop different skills. Playing sports at a young age can build character in many ways, “Playing sports at a young age enables children to participate in social interactions and build skills such as teamwork, leadership, and responsibility as they learn to work with others to achieve a common goal,” (Aspen Institute). This is a benefit because they will build character from learning how to deal with wins and losses from playing sports. Also, they will develop different skills. Developing different skills will build character because, “numerous positive developmental indicators have been associated with sport participation, including improved self-esteem, emotional regulation, problem-solving, goal attainment, social skills, and academic performance,” (Holt). This shows how when children play sports that some of them acquire different skills than others. Participating in a sport at an early age can be essential to the overall growth process during a child’s upbringing. Whether the participation is through some sort of organized league or just getting together amongst friends and playing, the lessons learned from this can help teach these kids and provide a positive message to them as they develop. There is a certain point, however, when organized sports can hinder progress, which is when adults get too involved and forget about the underlying reason to why they are helping. While adult involvement is necessary, adult involvement can sometimes send the wrong message to children when they try to make participation become more than just about fun and learning. According to Coakley (2009), “organized sports are worth the effort put forth by adults, as long as they do what is in the best interest of their children and put that thought ahead of their own agenda” (Coakley, p. 151). This is a valid argument because once adults put themselves in front of the children and their values, it needs to be re-evaluated as to why they first got involved in the beginning. Partaking in organized sport and activity from a young age can be beneficial to the overall development of children, as long as decisions actions are made in the best interest of the children and not stemming from ulterior motives of adults.
Some schools force students to participate in organized school sports. However, I believe that schools should not make this a requirement. Some students may have medical conditions, family situations that don't allow them to participate in organized school sports, or they simply may not have the time.
Are high school sports beneficial or not for students? I personally believe if a student is in a high school sport they’re forced to prioritize between school and their sport, and at a young age I believe the student would decide to use his time to improve in his sport instead of school. Which in the long run would affect his academics, unless they decide to stay up late and work on their homework to keep up with both school and their sport. But, even like that in time the lack of sleep would catch up to them, and cause them to do even worse in both academics, and sports. High school sports are like the lotto in my opinion, many play but only a few get rewarded for their work. Therefore, high school sports cause more negativity than positivity.
Participating in team sports is important not just for health reasons, but also for your healthy intellects and emotions. Playing sports that is in range of the player’s interest helps relieve stress and maintain their mental health. There are two main factors going into this problem, one is that the children are not getting enough exercise, and two is that they do not a have a healthy diet. The diet can be fixed by having healthy options at school for lunch and talking to parents about providing a healthier diet.
