This book, I Dared to Call Him Father: The Miraculous Story of a Muslim Woman’s Encounter with God, is, as the subtitle indicates, the story of how an aristocratic Pakistani woman, a lifelong Muslim, became a Christian in her fifties. Bilquis Sheikh was born in 1912 to conservative Muslim parents. As she grew up, she did not reject her Muslim faith, but acquired a disdain for anything spiritual or supernatural. If she could see it and explain it, she would believe it. Bilquis’ family was well known, hosting people from all over the world and often visiting London or Paris. Her husband was the Minister of the Interior, but they had divorced five years before, and feeling “the shame of rejection,” she secluded herself in her family’s ancestral home in the village of Wah. She lived with her servants and four-year-old grandson, and for the most part only visited with other family members.

Didion displays her resignation as she writes about the unharmonious relationship between her husband and her family. Her husband explains to her even though he likes her family, he still feels uncomfortable and uneasy during their visits because she tends to “Fall into their ways, which are difficult, oblique, deliberately inarticulate” (636). Even Didion’s family shows unsettlement as she writes “My brother does not understand my husband’s inability to perceive the advantage in the rather common real-estate transaction known as ‘sale-leaseback,’ and my husband in turn does not understand why so many of the people he hears about in my father’s house have recently been committed to mental hospitals or booked on drunk-driving charges” (636). Didion uses these contrasts of her two families to display the dissonant nature between her husband and her family in Central Valley, California. In her contrast and comparisons, she uses a discrete tone such as “What could the Canton dessert plates mean to him? How could he have known about the assay scales, why should he care if he did know?” (6...
Families provide people with an atmosphere in which to live, grow, and develop. A family culture is established by the parents and instilled in the children during their upbringing. A healthy family is a family which follows a set of strong morals, stays loyal to one another, cooperates, and works together to avoid conflict. An environment where there is openness amongst family members is ideal because minds that are open are more susceptible to avoiding conflict than minds that are closed. If conflict gets the best of a family, it has the potential to increase hostility and create remoteness between family members, however, if a family resolves conflict, it can strengthen and enforce the family relationships.
