Quotation From Rudi Volti, 2014, “Society and Technological Change”, page 5 “When technology is seen as a combination of devices, skills, and organizational structures, it becomes natural to think of it as a system.” Argument The purpose of this section was to define society, culture and technology. Thinking of technology as a system wraps these ideas into a cohesive package. If technology is a system, specifically one that allows us to achieve goals, then it follows that society and culture interact with this system. For instance, in “Culture,” written by Joseph R. Gusfield, he states “The origins of [culture] lie in the concept of cultivation, distinguishing that which is grown under human control, [...] from the products of nature.” From this perspective, technology and culture are mutual necessary for each other to function. Without technology, a means of achieving a specific goal, there would be no way means of cultivation. Without culture, something that is transmitted from generation to generation, there would be no need for technology. Using the definition society from the powerpoint, “societal organization is an adaptive mechanism through which individuals cooperate to their mutual benefit,” we can interpret society as a guide of technology. Supposing a society at one point in time values profit above environmental protection then they will use manufacturing techniques which produce more at the expense of the environment. ] This statement can be interpreted as a belief because it differentiates the place of human from beast. Specifically it contains the conception that learning is uniquely human. It also explicitly states the belief that school is a place of learning, something that implicitly diminishes other forms of learning outside of school. It can be seen as a value because it places judgement on children who do not go to school, comparing them to animals. Furthermore it emphasizes the value of going to school as vital to the process of education. As a norm, or “rule that specify behaviors appropriate and inappropriate to a particular social situation”, it clearly announces that children should go to school. Along these lines, it implies that adults in the society where this statement was made are expected to be educated. Question What technologies can all cultures and societies agree upon and benefit from and why? If there aren’t any universally accepted technologies, discuss why not.
Society is mostly based on the technological advancements built within a community. In the “New World”, Soma and the controlling of reproduction are just few of the many examples in the book. These technologies show that technology can shape a society. The theme being that technology can shape and control any society. Societies won’t function without advanced technology and if those technologies are present than they become a huge portion of the society.

The concept of sociotechnical systems was created in the 1960’s as a part of organizational development research by E. Trist and F. Emery. Ranging from a small system between you and your phone, to the interaction between human behaviors with massive technical infrastructures society has developed in hopes to boost performance and quality for both the societal and technical side of the system (Fischer).
Historically, in the relationship between human culture and technology, cultural evolution has lagged behind the pace of technological innovation. Technology is the human solution to fulfilling human needs. As these needs change, new technologies will supplement the old ones; inevitably changing the culture which created it, resulting in a co-evolution of technology and culture; and impacting the future of their culture. The disparate rate of cultural vs. technological evolution has consequences which cloud the prospect of the future of the human race unless we change the historical blueprint and try to thwart our disposition towards ignoring the responsibility we have today for the world we will live in tomorrow.
Technology in all of its forms, and in recent times with its rapid improvement and advancement, seems to push itself upon us and our culture, and the same can be said for the rest of the world. Cultures that have never been exposed to technology are now using it in small forms, or have adapted to it quite fondly. These cultures realize the supposed importance of technology in their lives, or may enjoy the simplicity of a new tool that frees up spare time and can get objectives accomplished faster and possibly in a better way than previous endeavors.
“In this chapter we survey influential theories of culture and technology,” states Murphie and Potts (p. 11). The authors analyze the relationship between culture and technology by introducing two positions: technological determinism and cultural materialism. The definitions of technology and culture have changed throughout history. As society changes, as do the meanings of the two terms. For technology, Murphie and Potts mention two definitions that are currently accepted.
According to the lecture presented by Hutchinson in module four, technology is explained as a system as opposed to our everyday electronics. Many individuals today think of technology in the terms of electrical appliances and the everyday uses of electricity. However, we see that technology is much bigger than that. In the book, Ways of Social Change, technology is understood in three ways. First, technology includes knowledge; we must know how to operate certain things, we must know the skills used for operation, and understand routines. Hutchinson simply puts it as knowing “how” to do things. Secondly, we must understand technology as a technique; it is simply knowing the “why” of how we do certain things the way we do. Human culture and technology are continually co-evolving in a dynamic relationship. All technologies (See Note 1) develop in a particular cultural context as the result of changing needs or constraints. But once developed, a technology changes the culture that gave it birth. When a technology spreads to another culture, the cultural context affects the speed or way in which the technology is adopted and how it is used. The diffusion of technologies to other cultures changes those other cultures as well. The changes in culture that one technology creates may then influence the development of another or different technology.
Most of my generation or the people that’s close in age, doesn’t have a clue as to what the first television set, computer or phone looked like back in the beginning of the technological stages. Honestly, I don’t blame them! In fact, I actually think the history of technology isn’t quite interesting. I mean who cares how technology was created or who was the first person to invent it?
