I’m going to begin this discussion with a subjective standpoint and than I would like to bridge my position objectivily that supports public health and tracking disease. In 1966, I lost my grandmother to breast cancer and it was discovered because she fell down some stairs and needed an x-ray to rule out any broken bones. It was advanced and too late for treatment. I never got to meet or know her, but placing that aside she has saved my life through our bloodline. Knowing what she died from has saved my life because of this knowledge when I was thirty-six I got a baseline mammogram, now five years later I will get another this year. This knowledge is power and I have a preventative framework in place along with nutrition and exercise
While the moral backing for public health in its current state may be sound, what many researchers fail to understand is that the many moral failings of its predecessors that color the legacy of public health internationally and at home. As discussed in the chapter “Colonial Medicine and its Legacies” within the textbook Reimagining Global Health arranged by Paul Farmer, before the conception of global health there was international health which sought to distribute health as a good horizontally across international, political lines. Under the framework of international health, public health workers became agents of a cold war enmeshed in the fiscal, geopolitical, and territorial struggles between two hegemons rather than the holistic value of community health. While international health as a framework has largely been abandoned, much of its rhetoric can be found within our current framework of public health such as the enumeration of certain parts of the world as "1st world", "2nd world",
Cancer is a deadly disease that millions of people die from a year. Many loved ones are killed with little to no warning affecting families across our world. My family happened to be one that was affected by this atrocious disease. This event changed the way my family members and I viewed cancer.
Public health may be defined as “a social and political concept aimed at the improving the quality of life among the whole population through health promotion, disease prevention and other forms of health intervention”.(1) The purpose of public health practice is to improve the health of society rather than individuals and reduce health disparities between individuals, groups, and communities through organized effort of the communities, individuals and organizations. As Marmot points out: “creating a fairer society is fundamental to improving the health of the population and ensuring a fairer distribution of good health”.(2) Besides this, the public health field is expanding to tackling new and contemporary risks: obesity, sexually transmitted
As you exit the bus, another passenger next to you starts to cough, and then you hold the handrail as you exit the bus. Since you’re late getting home, you take a shortcut through a field to get home quicker. These three simple acts just exposed you to bacteria, viruses, and insects that could cause illness or even death. Infectious diseases, also known as communicable disease, are spread by germs. Germs are living things that are found in the air, in the soil, and in water. You can be exposed to germs in many ways, including touching, eating, drinking or breathing something that contains a germ. Animal and insect bites can also spread germs.1
Health issues throughout the human lifespan are always hard to deal with. In this essay, I will give examples of different health issues that occur throughout the lifespan of a human. The seven different stages of a human’s lifespan include: infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood. By the concluding paragraph of this essay, you will have gained knowledge of some of the health related issues of a given person throughout their lifespan.
Instead of waiting for a condition to arise in the human body, people should practice preventive care to maintain ideal health and prevent illnesses from occurring in the first place. Preventive care includes such things as immunizations and vaccines, routine physicals, regular medical checkups and periodic colonoscopies.
This generation is debating if flu vaccinations are good or bad. There is a ton of mixed emotions for this topic. Starting with how vaccines can affect you positively, and negatively, and lastly, the important ones you should take.
Yes, this country was founded on liberty and freedom of choice, there can be no denying this. The primary source of debate against vaccinations as an assault on liberty stems from parent’s opinion that this is in some way the government trying to tell them how to raise their children as children in many states must have current vaccinations to attend public school. With respect, the government can have authority as to how someone raises their children. The government has laws detailing what constitutes child endangerment and abuse and failure for parents to remain well outside of these lines can result in parental incarceration and the movement of children into the foster care system. Federal law defines child abuse as "any recent act or failure
Although many people get vaccines when they are very young, it is important that everyone makes sure that they are up-to-date on all of their vaccines whether they are teens or adults. According to the CDC it is never too late to get vaccinated, whether you missed a vaccine or did not get all of the required booster shots. Vaccine preventable diseases have not gone away even though many do not infect the large numbers of people that they once did. It is important to make sure that you are protected against these diseases as some can make you very sick or even kill you. It is also important that you do not spread illnesses to your friends and family.
One of the most frustrating things about my grandma’s death was that she waited so long to visit a doctor. Learning that breast cancer is one of the most curable cancers makes me so selfishly upset. If she had been less resistant about getting regular check-ups and taking care of her body, I believe she would still be alive. It’s not effective to think about “what ifs” because I can’t change what happened; however, I wish she were still here.
Many people come to the United States of America in order to live freely and make choices based on their personal morals. Considering the fact that America is known for being the “land of the free”, people should be able to choose whether or not they want to get vaccinated. People should have the right to reject vaccinations for whatever reason it may be, whether it’s religious beliefs, health concerns, or lack of belief in the vaccination systems. Personally, Vaccinations have benefited me and my health, and I choose to get vaccinated. I choose to get vaccinated because I strongly believe in a way it helps build my immune system and keeps me from getting sick or catching diseases. However, people have different beliefs than mine. Therefore
Those who actively pursue denying the rights of others while trying to further their cause lead to a hatred against their movement. Vaccines, while an important aspect in maintaining proper health they should not be absolutely mandatory. The choice of vaccination should be left to the parents, as it is their right to nurture and care for their kids as they see fit(Anthony). Furthermore, a governmental mandate on vaccination causes many issues, it denies rights to the parents, it denies right to the grown adults and it taxes those who don’t comply. This strategy is not a very American approach, it is a strict mandate, and order then to conform. This goes against the American concepts of individualism(Anthony), this concept is Communist. There are also many circumstances that mandatory vaccination neglects, this includes the civil liberties granted to all citizens by the first amendment, and the equal protection granted by the 13 amendment(US Constitution). There are many reasons why the idea of mandatory
The South contributed to the emergence of public health strategy in the United States by demonstrating the need for non-passive government presence in times of economic and social hardship. The South was able to have implement public health strategies during the Civil War, but their destitute state after the war proved difficult in maintaining successful public health strategies.
Recently the number of parents who are intentionally delaying their children’s general vaccinations is increasing. The controversy that is causing the number of delayed vaccinations to go up is based on the fact that there are negative articles connecting them to autism and other similar diseases. When parents are researching vaccinations and they read those negative articles, those articles make them believe that vaccines cause autism. Vaccines are important because they protect humans from preventable diseases and getting them could save human lives. Vaccines are important throughout life no matter what some research suggests. Parents are now more likely to intentionally delay vaccines because of negative press, even though vaccines
Education is one of the greatest determinants. Relatively simply, the more schooling people have the better their health is likely to be. Though closely linked to income and occupation, the evidence indicates education exerts the strongest influence on health. This has been demonstrated in multiple facets over the past forty years. For instance, further formal education displays a frequent correlation with lower death rates; less education the opposite. In addition, studies show higher levels of risky health behaviors such as smoking and obesity, to be associated with less schooling (Freudenberg & Ruglis, 2007). As such, finishing secondary school has become a useful measure of educational attainment due to its influence on health.
