Are Women Athletes Paid Equal?

Women athletes must be treated and paid equally as men in sports because they are well recognized and play under the same rules and conditions as men. Equal pay in woman’s sports is more a myth than a reality. 150 years ago, sports used to be something that “went against feminism and softness” (New Statesman), but in the late 1800s and early 1900s, women began to show interest in sports and even formed athletic teams. Discrimination is like dust; it is everywhere and difficult to get rid of. However, the discrimination that marks women’s participation in sports has not stopped them from major accomplishments. If women and men play under the same rules and conditions, why aren’t they paid equally?
In soccer, although women are very well recognized, they are not treated equally as men, even though they play by the same conditions. The United States Women’s National Soccer Team has a major objective other than winning championships. This team has faced pay inequality over the past few years, but none of the team members had raised their voice. Women having less income than men was an irrelevant issue for the U.S Soccer, until two years ago when the team won the 2015 World Cup. The team’s captain, Carli Lloyd, stated, “It’s about treating people the way they deserve to be treated, no matter their gender” (Lloyd, The New Yorker), expressing her discontent with the way the …show more content…
