Pit bulls: Good or Bad?
What do you think of pit bulls? Pit bulls are seen as dangerous dogs by society, but are they really that bad? Others think that pit bulls are perfectly fine and are like any other dog. There have been people attacked by pit bulls causing injury or death. Other people are perfectly fine with pit bulls being family pets. Before I start talking about this subject, think about your opinion of pit bulls and why you think that.
Pit bulls are sometimes dangerous. An example is of a two-and-a-half-year-old boy named, Jayden, that got attacked by three pit bulls. The pit bulls jumped over their back-yard fence and jumped on the boy. They took his head in their mouth and started shaking their head. In the article, ‘Troublemakers’

by Malcolm Gladwell, stated, “Jayden was straggling behind, and, as his father’s back was turned, a pit bull jumped over a back-yard fence and lunged at Jayden.” Pit bulls have also killed some people. In the article, ‘Troublemakers’ by Malcolm Gladwell, stated, “…dogs known to have seriously injured or killed human beings, and, as a result, pit bulls have been banned or restricted in several Western European countries, China, and numerous cities and municipalities across North America.” Many places don’t trust pit bulls, so they have them banned. I have heard of pit bulls turning on their owners , even after being with them for three years. Sometimes you just can’t trust these kinds of dogs, even if you’ve had them for a long time. Some pit bulls aren’t even dangerous.
The same article says, “Most don’t bite anyone.” Why should you be afraid if most pit bulls don’t even bite. Other dogs are also very violent it’s not just pit bulls. In the same article it says, “ …and the dog that recently mauled a Frenchwoman so badly that she was given the world’s first face transplant was, of all things, a Labrador retriever.” No one would expect a Labrador to do something so violent because they are seen as family dogs that are gentle and kind. Many of the dogs that attack people are not raised properly. In the article it says, “In many cases, viscous dogs are hungry or in need of medical attention.” It then goes on to say, “ In about a quarter of fatal dog-bite cases, the dog owners were previously involved in illegal dog fighting. The dogs that bite people are, in many cases, socially isolated because their owners are socially isolated, and they are viscous because they have owners who want a viscous dog.” So, some dogs are viscous because they just don’t know how to act around others because they are not social. Another reason is because their owners just want them to be viscous.
The article says,” It was a textbook dog-biting case: unneutered, ill-trained, charged-up dogs, with a history of aggressive behavior.” So, this means that this pit bull attacked because of all these reasons. Sometimes it’s not the pi bull’s fault, but the owners fault for not treating them right. Some pit bulls are also violent because
they used to be fighting dogs, so they think that they are supposed to be violent. So, many things contribute to dogs attacking and even killing people. People have so many different opinions on pit bulls. Pit bulls have killed people and have been banned in many European countries. Pit bulls have turned on their owners even after being with them so long. On the other hand, a Frenchwoman had to get a face transplant because of a labrador retriever, so other dogs also attack people severely. Most pit bulls don’t bite anyone. Many pit bulls attack people because of how their owners treat them and how they are raised. Do you still have the same opinion or has it changed after reading this?
Pit bull terriers have a long track record of attacks against people and animals. A 1987 study of a particularly savage attack against a child was documented by four doctors in the hopes...
Pit bulls, the most dangerous dog to ever live. People like to train Pit Bulls to fight other dogs until they are either hurt or dead. The owners that train the dogs are usually the ones that make the dog turn out to be vicious and dangerous. “Each year, 1.2 million dogs are euthanized, approximately 40% of whom are Pit Bulls”(Moore). Pit Bulls don’t know better to understand which is right from wrong since they’re being raised up to fight and protect. Pit Bulls aren’t good family dogs due to the power of their strength and that they could attack at any moment.
Pit bulls, like any other dog, grow into their temperament. The way the dog is raised rounds out their character and general temperament. According to the “American Temperament Test Society: Pit bulls pass temperament tests 84.1% of the time, which ranks them slightly better than golden retrievers (83.8%) and cocker spaniels (81.7%), and well above miniature schnauzers (78.6%),” (The Biting Truth). Myths have generated atrocious attitudes towards this breed for years. The nature of the dog to be a protector to children and the bulky build of pit bulls makes them a very easy breed to target. These opinions ...
Many people associate a negative connotation with the dog breed “pit bull.” These dogs are thought to be dangerous and problematic. However, much of this can be attributed to the mass amounts of negative media attention that pit bull breeds receive as opposed to other breeds of dogs that can be just as dangerous. For example, The National Canine Research Council did a four-day study on dog-bite repo...
Pit Bulls are not born with an aggressive nature as they are born like any other breed, and like any other dog, a Pit Bull will be loving, smart, and loyal, unless it is trained otherwise. The aggressive nature of a dog comes from the dog’s training. If a dog is trained to be loving and loyal, it will have a good temperament, however; if a
Pit bulls are believed to have originated in the late 1700’s, when the terriers, typically small dogs bred to catch vermin, were crossbred with bulldogs, a stockier dog whose duty was to catch stray cattle. This produced a dog with a high prey drive with a medium-sized, stocky build and powerful jaws. Contrary to popular belief, the dogs were originally used in the sport of bull-baiting, where dogs would attack the cattle - not other dogs. Since the sport was executed in a pit, the dogs were dubbed ‘pit bulls’ and that name has stuck since. When the sport was banned in 1835, the people who relied on these dogs for an income turned the dogs against each other.
In 18 August, 2011, the source of this event is from Herald Sun. A four-year-old lovely child named Ayen Chol was mauled and killed by a pit bull cross while she was playing in her home. The vicious pit bull escaped from a neighbour’s yard and mauled Ayen in a sudden attack. The dog rushed inside the house and set upon Ayen and some other children who were watching television. Ayen’s mom tried to beat the dog away from the children with a table, but she failed. Then the dog turned on Ayen and the vicious injuries caused Ayen’s death. Dr Cam Day, who is the RSPCA’s Queensland pit bull expert, has claimed that American pit bull terriers are ‘head, shoulder, feet and everything else above other breeds’ in terms of their capacity to injure and maim. If the government doesn’t ban pit bulls, these tragedies would continue to happen and children’s lives would be threatened all the
When most people today see a pitbull they see it as a monster who could snap at any moment. Something that they should protect themselves and their family from; but that is not necessarily true. Is any one man or woman exactly like the last? A human being’s personality along with their capacity for violence is molded by their past and how they were treated growing up; pit bulls are no different. In today’s society pitbulls are unfairly discriminated against because they are favored among street gangs and dog fighting rings, leaving a staggering number of loyal and loving dogs homeless or mistreated.
Just the sight of a pit bull instills apprehension and even fear in some people, who believe the dog may attack them for no reason and not let go. Many communities have placed this ostracized breed under severe restrictions; some municipalities have implemented bans outlawing ownership of the breed. Today’s society regards the pit bull as the most vicious and unpredictable of all dog breeds, whereas admirers of the pit bull believe this misconception stems from irresponsible owners and the inflammatory and negative publicity concerning this breed.
Daily Progress Staff. “Pit bulls: vicious or victims?” The Daily Progress 07 July 2008. 15 December 2010
...ociated Press published an article “Pit Bulls are A Danger to Society,” yet this year, the same publisher issued an article “Attitudes and Laws Against the Pit Bull Soften – The Big Story” in which the Pit bull advocates hail the changes as recognition that breed-specific laws discriminate against dogs that are not inherently aggressive or dangerous should not be discriminated against or victimized. The debate puts millions of pit bull owners up against a relatively small group of activists against the breed and challenges the notion that Pit Bulls that are well-cared for had any history of aggressive behavior in the first place, closing the argument by again stating what the Canadian Encyclopedia explained, that their actions were just a park of the cycle of favorites and least favorites that has always been and always will be in the history of ownership of dogs.
This is a myth. First off there is no breed named pitbull. It is simply a term grouping dog breeds like the American Staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier together. Any dog who resembles the appearance of these 2 breeds is categorized as a pitbull. 2nd it's how you raise them that makes pitbulls, or any dog aggressive. The media makes the pitbull seen as a “tough” dog, and this attracts the bad owners to the breed. A dog who is abused and neglected is going to think all humans are bad because it has never been treated kindly by a human. Imagine you are tied up to a tree, in someone's backyard. The only human contact you get is when your owner comes out to feed you once a week. The nextdoor neighbor throws rocks at you and shoots you with a bebe gun when you bark. Your were never given a pat on the head or never got your belly rubbed. Are you going to react to humans the same way as the dog who was treated like family? Of course not. You have never had a positive experience with humans. It doesn't matter whether the dog chained to a tree is a Pitbull, Rottweiler or golden retriever, they are all going to react the same way to humans. According to PETA, dogs who are kept outdoors are 3 times more likely to attack then house dogs. I agree dog bites need to be regulated, but murdering innocent dogs is not the way to go. Since 2003 more than 450 people, many
Roughly about 30% of all dogs are pit bulls that are taken to shelters which depending on the area that figure can raise up to 60%. Not every pit bull rescued were a part of dog fighting but John Goodwin, of the Humane Society, says most of the dogs have scars and marks to show for their fights. The fate of these dogs remain to a judge that determines whether the fight dogs need to be euthanized. Since these dogs were trained to be aggressive and attacks other animals 9 times out of 10 they are to be put down. The dogs that haven’t been a part of dog fighting fit into a family and shows no sign of
Even though pit bulls are the majority of dog attacks anybody hears about, they are loyal and caring dogs. All they want is the love and approval of their owners. They will do anything that they are told to do. Their strength, stamina, and speed fuel the passion they have for their owners. Pit bulls are not vicious by nature; they are good guard dogs fueled by the love for their family; and, they are definitely loyal friends. They have a lower temperament than many other well-known breeds; therefore, they are not vicious by nature at all. They are very strong guard dogs. Pit bulls are known to be a scary breed, so people stay away from them. They have an amazing amount of speed and stamina that they can use to chase predators away, too. Pit bulls are the best friends anyone could ask for. They are loyal and loving creatures that just want to please their family. They are good dogs to train to be around children. If the children are a part of the dog’s family, then the dog will protect the child at all costs. Pit bulls are a good breed to have as a family
Contrary to that popular belief, dangerous animal behavior is the function of inherently dangerous dog owners, not inherently dangerous dogs. One fact that supports this is that pit bulls are the dogs most often shot during drug raids (TELLINGS v. Toledo). Besides the pit bulls that are owned by drug dealers for status symbols and protection, many pit bulls are owned by people that breed them for fighting. These poor dogs have a very slim chance of living a normal and happy life. This is not the fault of the dog, but the fault of the owners that should not have the dog, or should care for them better.
