Are you distracted by technology? You might not realize it but getting distracted by technology happens a lot more then people may think. How many times do you find yourself scrolling through Instagram in class because a notification popped up? Or doing research for a paper and google somehow knows you need new shoes. Causing hundreds of Nike shoe ads line the sides of the website. Although it may seem harmless, technology is distracting especially with the ease of access we have. Even with self-control the ads, apps, and other distractions always seem to find us. Advertisements are a huge distraction today. With google getting better at tracking activity on shopping sites, it makes it almost impossible to escape them. Facebook, twitter, and Instagram have all integrated ads into the user interface. Simply looking at current events can turn into shopping for a pair of shoes. Escaping the distraction takes multiple ad blockers and lots of self-control. Sometimes that’s not even enough. Tristan Harris’ “How Technology Hijack’s People’s Minds” talks about how technology influences over two billion people every day. Today, technology companies who have systems with advertisements, news feed, and recommended videos are determining what people do with their time and what they are looking at. Some examples of where ads can be found are on the television, the radio, billboards, and public transportations. With the constant contact there is no wonder that ads have an influence in today’s culture.
According to The Huffington Post, people are on their devices for, on average, about eleven hours and fifty-two minutes a day. That is almost half a day and a lot longer than most people sleep or work. People have not yet realized how they or their families are being affected by this constant use of technology. As a result of technology increasing, children are experiencing health problems, school issues, and social problems. First and foremost, health problems due to the increase in technology usage is becoming a bigger issue than one might think.
