Over the past year, positive psychologists studied the basic emotions of the brain: sadness, madness, happiness.
Happiness is the most popular emotion, but are other emotions necessary? Positive psychologists argue that there are other emotions that are more important in life than happiness. Experiencing other emotions are important because both emotions can create happiness. Negative emotions are as equally important as positive emotions because negative emotions help the thinking processes and promote growth and improvement.
Negative emotions help our thinking process. When we are stuck in a dangerous situation, the brain triggers an immediate flight or fight response. Our flight or fight response is the human instinct that strikes the fear of death. Fear plays a crucial role in our awareness by tipping “us off to the presence of danger” ( Begley ). Fear helped our ancestors evolve to help them battle dangers in order to survive. Fear makes us more aware of our surroundings. A person’s brain kicks into survival mode. Negative emotion can also be toxic. Examples of unhealthy negative emotions are depression, anxiety, guilt and anger. These emotions promote destructive actions and behavior. When children develop negative behavior they lead to doing destructive actions. If the children continue to do the destructive action, it leads to negative consequences. Negative emotions can lead to serious health problems. Building emotions of rage and hatred in the mind affect the body process. Content feeling of negative emotions can take an effect on the body forming high level of stress, anxiety and high blood levels. Negative emotions stop us from thinking and behaving rationally and seeing situations in their true perspective. When the negative emotion overrules a person then he tends to listen only to his inner voice, on which he has no control. Negative emotions should not be prolonged for a longer time and when it happens, the problem becomes more entrenched. Negative emotions, if not handled with patience and appropriate measures, it can lead to big disasters of any kind, for example, expressing anger with violence.
People push being happy on society as a total must in life; sadness is not an option. However, the research that has conducted to the study of happiness speaks otherwise. In this essay Sharon Begley's article "Happiness: Enough Already" critiques and analyzes societies need to be happy and the motivational affects it has on life. Begley believes that individuals do not always have to be happy, and being sad is okay and even good for us. She brings in the research of other professionals to build her claim that extreme constant happiness is not good for people. I strongly agree that we need to experience sadness to build motivation in life and character all around.

All of our emotions play a big role in our lives. Even though it does not feel like it at the moment, negative feelings can be a good thing.If we never become sad, angry, or scared we would not be able to appreciate the true value of happiness, we would only focus on ourselves and happiness, and we would become less alert to threats and dangerous situations around us.
Fear influences people to make irrational decisions and take extreme measures. Often times, these actions are done to protect one’s reputation. Fear causes people to lie and manipulate to those they care about in order to escape what they are scared of most. Fear of failure has caused higher levels of anxiety, and has made society put blame on each other, rather than owning up to their mistakes. Fear can also cause one to forget one’s true identity and lose one’s values. There are two options that one can take when being faced with a fear: run away from the fear, or go through it and learn a valuable lesson in the end that will make you a stronger person. Fear is a harmful emotion that everyone has to go through in order to succeed.
“There is nothing to fear but fear itself” (Roosevelt). “Fear is a chain reaction in the brain that starts with a stressful stimulus and ends with the release of chemicals that cause a racing heart, fast breathing and energized muscles, among other things, also known as the fight-or-flight response” (Layton). Fear affects the brain and can help people or make them in a worse situation than they were in the first place. Fear most motivates/influences people during times of crisis by clouding judgement and becoming a weapon of power.
In the words of Bertrand Russell, “Fear is the main source of superstition, and one of the main sources of cruelty. To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom” (Russell). Fear causes many problems in our lives. Fear influences many of a person’s actions and decisions. However, people usually regret the decisions or actions they made out of fear. Also, these actions and decisions can cause problems for those people in their future. Fear is a harmful emotion, for it clouds people’s judgement, disables them from taking action, and causes them to make decisions that they will regret later.

One controversial topic may be that people cannot express their emotions effectively online. Online environments are also complicated to have interactions and establish a presence.
