Are Children Smarter Because Of The Internet?
After numerous years of study and experiments completed by physicians, educationalists and researchers. The outcome is overwhelmingly positive in favor of having children use the internet. Technology endorses that students can take on some of the responsibility for their own learning and can take personal action to focus on thinking as a vital element to their education process. Research suggests that the internet does make children smarter because it allows children to have higher self confidence, build fine motor and cognitive skills, increase visual memory, and use trial and error to problem solve on their own.

Hence, children are more relevant to feeling worthy, deserving and entitled to assert their needs and desires. The internet is also producing more deeply engaging children because they have the ability to be more absorbed in obtaining knowledge than traditional textbook learning can provide (Wilson, and Dr. James Bower, 2011).
Another important skill learned because of the internet is cognitive skills– these skills are associated with thinking and knowing they are required for children to understand language and numbers, to reason and problem solve, and to learn and remember. Although the term "cognitive skills" encompasses a broad array of competencies, research on the effects of computer use on cognitive skills has focused on the development of a specific set of visual intelligence skills crucial to the use of computer technology: spatial skills, iconic (or image representation) skills, and visual attention skills. Computer applications of many kinds, and especially computer games, are designed in ways that emphasize visual rather than verbal information processing. Consider popular action games with their rapid movement, imagery, and intense interaction, plus various activities occurring simultaneously at different locations on the screen. Studies indicate that children who play such games can improve their visual intelligence skills—skills that may provide them with "training wheels" for computer literacy down the road (Greenfield, 2000). Does the internet make us smarter or dumber is a question that has been asked more frequently, especially when referring to my generation. In Nicholas Carr’s article “Does the Internet Making Us Smarter or Dumber?” he adamantly believes that the internet is in fact making us dumber with its various distractions, hindering cognitive development, and affecting our knowledge retention. He supports his belief with studies such as the one conducted at a university where students were divided and only half were allowed to use their computers during class while the others were not (Carr,22) . The outcome showed that those who did not use the internet did better on the tests (22). After reading this article it made me ask the question myself and I believe that the internet is making me smarter in certain ways and dumber in others.
McClellan’s (2005) article reports that according to Johnson’s study, computer games are essentially brain exercises that improve the psychological fitness holistically because they require continuous focus, strategic decision-making, and creative thinking. We have found that not only is the internet making us a more productive society but it is also making us a more analytical society. Through the internet we now have much quicker access to information that at one point was tedious to obtain. People are also growing to have much shorter attention spans but are using the short amount of time we have to focus to get more work done. Along with shorter attention spans we have also gained more analytical minds. Studies have found that due to the way our minds work now we need mental breaks and the internet provides one of the quickest and most simple ways to achieve these breaks. Technological advances have given people more opportunities to use their intelligence in different ways.
