Recommended: Conclusion on why athletes are good role models

Assignment 3: Athletes aren’t role models-Really?
Many famous athletes aren’t exactly angels. Take a look at Tiger Woods and John Terry (Chelsea footballer). Both are extremely successful players of their respective sports. Unfortunately, they are also prone to giving up to their hormones and desires. Tiger Woods allegedly had sex with at least 10 different women during his marriage. John Terry had an affair with his best friend, Wayne Bridge’s wife. Both players are now divorced.
With all these scandals about athletes going on, it is not surprising that people are calling athletes bad examples to the younger generations. However, I think that we have once again overlooked the good things that these people have done.
I feel that Ms Raina Kelley, the writer of the article “They’re Not Role Models” in Newsweek, is generalizing the behaviour of all athletes worldwide. All the athletes named in this article have one thing in common: They …show more content…

We all care about our favourite athletes. If no one cared, there wouldn't be press conferences about the scandals. The TV networks wouldn’t broadcast it. Mr Teitelbaum wouldn’t have written his book if he didn't care about athletes- he wrote an entire book about their failures and mistakes.
At the start of the article, the writer says that she has never heard of an adult saying that an athlete was his/her role model. Steven Gerrard says that his role model was Kenny Daglish, a former footballer. Kobe Bryant, an NBA superstar says that his role model was Michael Jordan. Unless the writer is indirectly saying that athletes have “a social IQ less than a ten-year old child”, then it is obvious that many young adults and aspiring individuals have looked up to athletes as role models because of their drive to succeed and their willingness to help others in

There is just something attractive about the thought of being in good physical condition and being talented in sports. These athletes are the ones that propose questions over whether athletes should be considered role models or not. A role model can be defined as a person whose behavior, example or success is or can be emulated by others, especially young people. Who would want their child looking up to someone who has been convicted of domestic violence or has a drug addiction? It is an argument of opinion that cannot be settled.
