If people did just as they pleased without any regard for others, life would probably get pretty chaotic. Law is one of society's most basic and necessary institutions. It establishes a person’s duties and obligations. The law also sets penalties for those who violate the rules. It helps teach us right from wrong. One of the earliest known written set of laws was composed by Hammurabi. Today my speech will cover who Hammurabi was, what his codes were, examine some of his most important and influential laws, and finally I'll discuss the significance it had moving forward.

Sicily was a self-governing colony in Magna Graecia, which was in Southern Italy. Plutarch wrote about Archimedes in his book Parallel Lives, which he said Archimedes was related to King Hiero ll, the ruler of Syracuse. Archimedes spent most of his life in Sicily, near Syracuse except for his journeys to Alexandria. He never held any public office but he was faithful to his lifetime of research and experiment. At times, Archimedes became so immersed in his work that he would forget to eat. He used every surface available to do his work on, including oil on his skin to ashes from a fire. Many of Archimedes’ discoveries were put to the test during the Roman conquest of Sicily. His mechanical tools and machines were used, including the legendary catapult which he is credited for making. This was all for the protection of Syracuse.

A lot of the very basic principles and core subjects of mathematics, physics, engineering, inventing, and astronomy came from the innovations, inventions, and discoveries that were made by both Euclid and Archimedes.
Archimedes discovered Density when he was set on a mission to figure out if a craftsman had given the king a pure gold crown or had defrauded him with silver instead. Archimedes pondered this when he was in a pool. When he slipped himself into the pool he realized that some water had spilled over. Archimedes then had an epiphany and realized that the amount of water that spilled over was equal in volume to the space that his body took up. Archimedes then applied this epiphany to differentiating whether the king's crown was silver or gold. Archimedes put the Craftsman's crown and a pure gold crown of the same mass in two tubs of water. He observed that more water spilled over the sides of the tub when the craftsman's crown was submerged.

His Elements is one of the most influential works in the history of mathematics, serving as the source textbook for teaching mathematics on different grade levels. His geometry work was used especially from the time of publication until the late 19th and early 20th century Euclid reasoned the principles of what is now called Euclidean geometry, which came from a small set of axioms on the Elements. Euclid was also famous for writing books using the topic on perspective, conic sections, spherical geometry, number theory, and rigor.
