When referring to archaic writing, it is clear to see the recurring archetypes and symbols throughout plots and situations. Understandably, certain patterns involving such motifs have continued through centuries, resulting in various works based around the same monomythic template with slight variations. All the big movie titles we love, Aladdin, Shrek, even, Sharknado contain more than traces of these archetypal patterns, consisting of a hero, a mentor, a dark figure and so on. Prime examples of this archetypal plot structure, with their own unique adaptations, may be found within the two poetic narratives Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Aside from their completely disparate backgrounds and morals, both works include and follow the monomythic journey, as perceived by Joseph Campbell in The Hero with a Thousand Faces, as well as in the secondary works of others who have helped to further our understanding of this analytical method. This generalization, however, is shifted when one dissects further into these two pieces of literature. and valor while also upholding cultural values; however, the inspiration behind this behavior by the protagonist may vary from story to story. In Beowulf, the protagonist upholds these traits primarily for his pride and pleasure. On the other hand, in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the protagonist fulfills these characteristics in order to stay true to the code of chivalry, not simply to further his own ends. When looking deeper into these two poetic narratives, one finds that the shift of paradigms becomes more obvious to the reader, supporting the idea that varying backgrounds influence writings and their overall meaning. As the standard introduction in writings based on the monomythic template, the protagonist resides in, or is aware of, a people or society that is being threatened or provoked. Here, the reader is introduced to various archetypes that initiate “the call” to action for the protagonist--the reason behind the journey. In Beowulf, the protagonist Beowulf becomes aware of an issue occurring across the North Sea in Daneland. As a notable brute in his homeland, Beowulf egotistically believes he can alleviate the dilemma that has transpired across the sea and pursues “the call”. By this point, Beowulf has encountered a plethora of archetypes seen throughout other pieces of literature, including the herald, the threshold, the threshold guardian and the devil figure. Similar to this, in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the Green Knight enters Camelot in search of a worthy knight to partake in a game originally conceived in the mind of the narrative’s devil figure, Morgain. Initially, the offer does not receive any response until Sir Gawain stands to take the place of King Arthur, thus accepting the call. As protagonists, it is almost obligatory to respond to the call however the motives behind their actions differ. As a thane domiciled in a world revolving around brute strength and Norse culture, Beowulf acts primarily for self-fulfillment and glory towards his manhood; supporting the idea that individuals from this culture often emphasized the significance of defending one’s honor and reputation, resulting in strong, boastful characters. Unlike Beowulf, residing in the romantic age of chivalry and proper edicate, Sir Gawain pursues his journey to display the high cultural values seen throughout medieval Europe. As both poetic narratives progress further into the monomythic plot structure, the themes and conflicts become more prevalent and understandable to the audience.
Although arguably different at first glance, the conflict in Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight would be the strong internal conflict that the protagonists experience throughout the entirety of each narrative. Beowulf simply disregards all advice presented to him in hopes of swaying his egotistical nature, which in turn results in his demise. Sir Gawain, on the other hand, dishonors the code of chivalry and Camelot by showcasing the true coward that lay beneath his facade. Synonymous in general, the internal conflicts the protagonists experience result in divergent resolutions and emotions for each
character.
The archetypes that permeate many different stories all originate from Joseph Campbell's Hero With a Thousand Faces. More specifically, in the medieval story, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, a variety of different archetypes are especially necessary to the theme of the story. An understanding of three key archetypes—the temptress the magic weapon, and the task—reveal the essence of Gawain’s role within the archetypal quest motif.
Over the course of the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Sir Gawain faced situations that influenced his character which can be taken and analyzed for a teenager today. A teenager typically faces the issue of blending in and accepting who they are in high school, and by viewing Gawain’s experiences and changes, we can use it to adapt along with our peers in school. Initially, he is seen as a humble and unpopular knight amongst every other at the round table in Camelot. However this changes after engaging in a violent game with the Green Knight. Gawain gained fame over the course of a year, and as a result it had changed his initial outlook on his loyalty to the chivalric code, as well as his values on life.
Many would agree that although there are many stories about heroes, they all seem similar in some way. Joseph Campbell wrote many books about this theory of a "hero cycle" that every hero story follows. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, this pattern is clearly exemplified and it shows the numerous steps in Joseph Campbell's idea of the hero cycle.
There are many parallels that can be drawn from the three temptations and hunting scenes and the three blows exchanged by the Green Knight. All of these scenes are interlocked together in the way that Gawain's quest is told and his trails he endures leading up to his meeting with the Green Knight to fulfill his promise made the year before.
Most poems written in the early 9th century to the late 14th century were about immortal things trying to take over a countries civilization. In every society, there are demons or monsters that the members of that society are fearful of. In those types of poems, a hero usually comes along and saves the day. In the poem Beowulf, we see that the hero, Beowulf, is religion protection and a hero to his society. In the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, we see that the villain, the Green Knight, is envious and dangerous to his society. I am going to discuss the difference in fears from a villain’s society and values in a hero’s society. In Beowulf, those fears in society are seen in that monster. Grendel plays a significant role throughout his society. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, those values are respected and praised in that hero. The fear of Grendel in Beowulf symbolizes the weakness in society throughout the poem and the values of Sir Gawain in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight symbolizes the strength and bravery throughout the poem.
Though often extensive detail may be condemned as mere flowery language, in understanding Sir Gawain and the Green Knight one must make special emphasis on it. In color and imagery itself, the unknown author paints the very fibers of this work, allowing Sir Gawain to discern the nuances of ritualistic chivalry and truth. His quest after the Green Knight is as simple as ones quest toward himself. Through acute awareness of the physical world he encounters Gawain comes to an understanding of the world beyond chivalry, a connection to G-d, the source of truth. He learns, chivalry, like a machine, will always function properly, but in order to derive meaning from its product he must allow nature to affect him.
Across different tales of male heroism and chivalric bravery dating back to the 14th century, chivalric literature has been centered on a hero who sets off to conquer a task but is then encumbered by several games and tests. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is no exception, by matter of fact; it is even a prime example of such a tale. In each specific story, these games and tests all serve different purposes, whether to prove the protagonist’s worth as a hero or to serve as some sort of plot filler. Their purpose in each specific story’s plot is not in question, what is in question is chivalric literature 's particular obsession with the employment of games and tests in its storylines. Why is this a common trend and what is its greater purpose in chivalric literature in general? These games and tests are of importance to the story as they serve as a driving force of the storyline and backbone. They are integral to Arthurian legends; the storyline would not be able to function without them. They offer further exhibitions into the story 's plot and the protagonist themselves.
The greatest part of these studies have involved the middle-English text Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Extensive work has been done on this alliterative four-part poem written by an anonymous contemporary of Chaucer: feminists have attacked his diatribe against women at the end, or analyzed the interaction between Gawain and the women of Bercilak’s court; those of the D. W. Robertson school seek the inevitable biblical allusions and allegory concealed within the medieval text; Formalists and philologists find endless enjoyment in discovering the exact meaning of certain ambiguous and archaic words within the story. Another approach that yields interesting, if somewhat dated, results, is a Psychological or Archetypal analysis of the poem. By casting the Green Knight in the role of the Jungian Shadow, Sir Gawain’s adventure to the Green Chapel becomes a journey of self-discovery and a quest - a not entirely successful one - for personal individuation.

Each story told about epic heroes who went on a long journey to face or conqueror someone or something. “Beowulf” is a poem about a young man, Beowulf, who slays a monster and his mother with his bare hands to protect the people he loves. As the years go by Beowulf becomes king and a dragon begins to stir. In response to this, Beowulf fights the dragon with a sword and one loyal companion. Beowulf’s life comes to end, but so does the dragons. From this epic poem you can see that good does triumph over evil, but sometimes it comes at a cost. Along with “Beowulf”, “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” was another popular poem. This poem was about a squire, Sir Gawain, who chooses to take on a game proposed by the Green Knight instead of his uncle, King Arthur. He took on the game because he believed King Arthur’s life was more valuable than his own and that King Arthur should not risk his own life. As a result, Sir Gawain became a knight because of his loyalty and bravery. Both Sir Gawain and the Green Knight’s and Beowulf’s characters share the same quality of courage, the desire to protect people and the involvement of supernatural beings.
Although Gawain and Beowulf share many similarities, their characters are almost complete opposites. Both aim for some sort of fame, one more than the other; differing in the way they attempt to achieve this success. Gawain remains true and looks to humility to guide him, whereas Beowulf is very prideful and selfish, loving nothing more than boasting about his virtues. Regardless, both go through tremendous changes throughout their quests, dealing with repercussions, and many challenging obstacles along the way.
Beowulf is an epic poem that describes the heroics of a man with superhuman strength and bravery to go with it. The poem starts with a journey across the sea to defeat an enemy that has plagued the land of Herot for twelve years. The poem ends with Beowulf’s final deed of defeating a dragon that was plaguing his own land, but with the defeat of the dragon also comes the death of Beowulf. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a poem of bravery by one of King Arthur’s knights. Sir Gawain takes up the deed of playing a Christmas game with the challenging Green Knight. The Green Knight takes a blow from an ax at the hand of Sir Gawain, and in one year and one day, the Green Knight is to reciprocate the action to Sir Gawain. While Sir Gawain was heroic in his deed, Beowulf shows a certain selflessness in his bouts makes him a better hero than Sir Gawain.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight fit in with the concept of a romance; it has all the elements that would make one consider the text as so. The tale holds adventure, magic, a quest and an unexpected reality check that even those who are considered “perfect” are also just humans. The author used this story as a way of revealing faults in some of the aspects of knighthood through the use of intertwining chivalric duty with natural human acts; thus showing to be perfectly chivalrous would be inhuman.
The narrative artistry of Sir Gawain and The Green Knight can be attributed to the fundamental elements of chivalric life and the exploration of classic mythological elements that allows the narrative to bridge the gap between Christianity and Paganism, and allow its readers to find their own spiritual interpretation with in the text.
