Hero’s gives us hope that there can be a choice other than the selfish one, that there is a reason to take the more difficult way. Why do we need superheroes? Because without them society is lost in despair. Kurtis Mathews explores the creation of the archetypal hero and societies frequent demand for them.

Storytelling is what connects us to our humanity. It is what links us to our past, and provides a glimpse into our future.

into modern man, heroic and omniscient figures have played an important role in the development of mankind. The heroic archetype can be defined as a primitive mental image inherited from the earliest human ancestors, and is supposed to be present in the collective unconscious. Jung believes symbols from different cultures are often very similar because they have emerged from archetypes shared by the whole human race. For Jung, our primitive past becomes the basis of the human psyche, directing and influencing present behaviour. Carl Jung developed the theory that humanity has a shared collective subconscious. You can best define this as being how we collectively understand the world. Enshrined within this concept is the idea of archetypes, figure, scenarios, storylines that are a shared feature of the stories we tell one another. Joseph Campbell, in collaboration with Jung, advanced this idea to include the archetypal representation of heroes. He surmised, that all hero’s conformed to a standard trajectory, a path that led to the same destination. He called this, ‘the hero’s journey.’ King Arthur was born a prince but had to live in the country under the guidance of Merlin and the care of Sir Ector. Arthur grew up in shame of his birth, never knowing of his royal lineage. Although Arthur was small and scrawny he had learned the value of knowledge that knowledge was greater than brute force. The potential to rule with justice and compassion what would become the greatest kingdom ever known. The sword was magic, Merlin explained, and only he who was fit to rule England could pull it from the stone. The fluke of all flukes, scrawny Arthur pulled the sword out and took his place as the King of England, probably because hundreds of men before him loosened the sword. Arthur’s life perfectly fits the hero’s archetypal mould. Arthur’s magical birth and working class upbringing hiding his true lineage. Possession of a supernatural weapon and the help of a powerful wizard. Arthur was also aided by the Knights of the Round Table throughout the duration of his rule. Arthur possesses all traits of a warrior king and proves himself to be worthy through defending the people of England from barbarians. Juxtaposed with the traditional Arthurian legend, the film Batman Begins illustrates that’s society still heavily relies on the classical hero archetype in modern contemporary literature. It can be seen that we are essentially looking at the same hero, however the individual has been modernised to the current time. Batman Begins tells the story of an orphaned boy transformed by the murder of his parents into a crime fighting beast. The Wayne family were outing to the cinema when it ended in tragedy for young Bruce Wayne. Walking homeward, Bruce, his father, Thomas, and mother, Martha, accidentally ventured into Gotham City's notorious "Crime Alley" and were accosted by a mugger. Not content merely to rob the wealthy family, the hoodlum - whose identity was "never determined" - shot Dr. Thomas and Martha Wayne dead before fleeing into the darkness. As he knelt beside his parent's bodies, Bruce swore to avenge them. After the police arrived, Bruce was comforted by Alfred Pennyworth who helped arrange matters so that Gotham's Social Services would not take Bruce into care. In this way, Alfred enabled Bruce to realize his dream of becoming a crusader against crime. Bruce embarked on a journey that took him to every continent as he sought to learn all the skills he would need to keep his vow. He studied criminology, forensics, and criminal psychology, and learned from man hunters and martial artists, mastering every fighting style. In time, Bruce forged himself into a living weapon to wage war on crime and injustice. On his return to Gotham, Bruce stalked street thugs as a plainclothes vigilante. Beaten by the very people he intended to protect, he barely survived his first night out. As he sat bleeding in his study at Wayne Manor Bruce knew that he had to first strike fear in the hearts of his foes. Just then, a bat crashed through the study window, giving Bruce the inspiration he needed. Establishing a secret headquarters in the caves beneath his mansion, Bruce became Batman, a Dark Knight to protect Gotham and its citizens from vice and villainy. Alfred Pennyworth remained his confidant, tending to injuries and offering sage advice - whether requested or not! Batman became an urban legend, a cautionary tale that sent shivers through the city's underworld.
This Caped Crusader found a friend in Captain James Gordon a Gotham cop who didn't approve of Batman's methods, but appreciated the results of his nightly crime fighting. Batman's Rogues Gallery grew to include a host of bizarre criminals, such as the Joker, Catwoman, Two-Face and the Penguin. As his enemies increased, help arrived in the form of another young boy left parentless by brutal crime.
Similarly to the Arthurian legend Bruce was not raised by his parents and was raised by a wise old man. Although Batman does not possess magical weapons his gear is highly advanced military technology and the mastery of all martial arts. Although Batman doesn’t have the Knights of the Round Table, Bruce maintains a fleet of high-tech and high-powered vehicles, chief among the Batmobile, Batcycle, Batboat, Batplane and Batcopter and a supersophisticated Batcave headquarters (The man lives in a cave) which can be compared to the knights; as both aid the hero.
Bruce Wayne is commonly referred to as the Prince of Gotham, which is similar to the King of England. Both are powerful and wise men with strong political and moral agendas.
Both seek out evil: Gotham would have been destroyed if Batman had not defeated The Scarecrow, The Joker, Bane, and many
more. King Arthur and his knights of the round table protect people and followed their “honour code”. Similarities Cont. Both changed along their journeys: Batman became the strongest force in Gotham in which all the evil villains had to deal with. King Arthur became a great man, but changed once he found out Lancelot was sleeping with his wife Guinevere. Both of their stories include romance: Batman’s relationship with
An archetype is a universal symbol. It is also a term from the criticism that accepts Jung’s idea of recurring patterns of situation, character, or symbol existing universally and instinctively in the collective unconscious of man. Archetypes come in three categories: images (symbols), characters, and situations. Feelings are provoked about a certain subject by archetypes. The use of the images of water, sunsets, and circles set the scene of the movie. Characters, including the temptress, the devil figure, and the trickster, contribute to the movie’s conflicts that the hero must overcome in order to reach his dream. However, to reach his dream, the hero must also go through many situations such as, the fall, dealing with the unhealable wound, and the task. By using archetypes in the movie, the viewer can obtain more than just the plot and better understand the true theme of the movie: to never give up on dreams.
Likewise, the old Batman (Bob Kane's incarnation) contains many similar elements. While he is orphaned when a criminal murders his family, he is also wealthy. In the first comic series he is depicted as the victim of the unrestrained greed of the poor—suggesting some biased assumptions about class differences (remember Odysseus is actually the King of Ithaca). As a result of his traumatic past, he becomes a"dark knight" to pursue criminals at night, the ideal time for crime, and dresses as a"bat" to induce fear in the
An archetype in literature is defined as a typical example of a certain type of person. A character in a poem or play can be placed into many different archetype categories. Archetypes help a reader to gain a better understanding of who a character in the work is on the inside. This deeper insight into the character allows the reader to follow the flow of the story easier and more effectively. There are many different archetypes that can help advance the story.
We always called this brave hero, Batman. Few knew his real identity, and they have reframed from sharing this information with the public, even as police commissioner, I James Gordon, never knew his real identity.
In origin, a hero is an archetype character that refers to protectors, warriors, or god-like man who protects humanity. For instance, Hercules was a hero in Greek mythology. In modern culture, heroism is recognized as an extremely popular trait that a character can possess. In this case, Bat Man, also referred to as The Dark Knight, is indisputably idealized as a hero. Unlike most superheros in comicbooks culture, Bat Man is a simple human being with absolutely no superpowers. Regardless of that, he as a simple human being still exhibits the courage, intelligence, talent and the necessary skills in fighting crime and defeating potentially hazardous villains seeking to either rule the world or cause destruction. In detail, Bat Man’s real name is Bruce Wayne. Bruce was 10 years old when his parents were murdered which fundamentally change his perception about the world. After his parents’ death, Bruce inherited a multibillion dollar company that his father created before his birth, which explains why he has the most advanced technology to help him fight crime. While growing up, Bruce trained himself to fight and had been working out. One night, he came to the conclusion that Gotham city is falling into the hands of criminals. For that reason, he convinced himself that it should be his obligation to prevent it, although he needed a hero identity to hide his real identity
Archetypes are designed to be universal and original models after which similar ideas are patterned. They include, but are not limited to images, recurring themes, symbols, ideas, character types and plot patterns. Archetypes can be expressed in myths, dreams, literature, religion, fantasies and folklore. They are an effective means utilized to evoke strong associations, emotional or physical, to the reader or audience. Carl Jung, a psychiatrist and analytical psychologist, created the term ‘archetype’ and claimed that they could also be applied to literature. Jung recognized that there were recurring and universal patterns in many stories regardless of their cultural or historical period. As a result, he hypothesized that the human conscious contained a collective unconscious relatable to most people. In literature, it is important to recognize archetypal patterns because they hold special symbolic meanings that are representative of universal ideas similar to how the image of a mother represents love and sacrifice and how the color white represents purity and innocence.
Batman was created after Detective Comics (D.C.) wanted a new super hero to follow-up after Superman. In May of 1933, Bob Kane and Bill Finger created Batman. Bob was born on October 24, 1915 and died November 3, 1998. Bill was born February 8, 1914 and died January 1974. Bill always loved comics as a child and still when he went to high school at DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx New York. He and Bob went to the same high school but never socialized because they were in different classes. Bob meet Bill when Bill was working as a shoe salesman. They worked on many comics together for kids comic books and local newspapers. When they found out that Detective Comics (D.C.) wanted a new super hero they went to work. One day Bob came to Bill with a character, Batman. Bill liked the idea but said it looked too much like Superman. The original illustration had a Robin style mask and red outfit. So Bob took a Webster’s Dictionary and found a picture of a bat. He added bat ears to the mask, giving the full mask a more mysterious look. He changed the colors to black and yellow and added a cape that was cut like bat wings. When writing the comics Bill made Batman’s personality a...
Somebody who had established higher power in their community. Somebody who tried to run from fate, and has the moment of recognition and understanding of their destiny. Batman. Even though he is considered the strong and powerful superhero of Gotham City, Batman's characteristic features show that he relates strongly to that of a "tragic" hero. In the beginning, the Batman is presented at a higher state of appreciation, even though the police see him as a vigilante. Despite his wealth, Batman, otherwise known as Bruce Wayne, is easily relatable to audiences, which makes it easy to sympathize and empathize with the character. Batman is in a constant battle within himself, trying to be the good guy, while defeating the bad guys. His morals prove true when he admits that he won't kill any of the many villians that cause destruction for Gotham City. But, because of this moral, sometimes the villians end up escaping and doing more harm then good. In the end, this interal chaos and internal battle is seen interally and externally through Batman. At the end of the most recent Batman series, The Dark Knight, his exit at the end of the movie is, in essence, his figurative death. Bruce Wayne wants to keep Gotham City safe. And with the "Batman" gone, villians will be least likely to continue to destroy and conquer. As an audience, we cling to the edge of our seats and feel dismay for our beloved superhero and what is to become of
An archetype is a human experience or symbol that is universally known and accepted. Archetypes can be images or stories passed on through history. Carl Jung, a prominent psychiatrist in the early 1900’s, used archetypes in his theory about the human psyche and how humans can recognize these symbols because they reside in the collective human subconscious. Some common examples of archetypes are The Hero, The Mentor, The Mother, The Villain and many more. Archetypes like these can be seen in everyday things like books, tv or movies. In The Complete Stories by Zora Neale Hurston there are many different archetypes in each story but three prominent ones are The Trickster, The Devil or Evil, and The Hero. In the novel The Trickster archetype
Batman is a hero during the night that protects the people of Gotham city to the best of his capability and is willing to sacrifice everything, even his true identity. Then there is Bruce Wayne, who is a very rich, spoiled playboy that does not care about anything other than him and the luxurious lifestyle he lives. The ideological struggle between Batman and Bruce Wayne is very important in this book because everyone at some point struggles between who they actually are and who they want to be. The way Frank Miller portrays the struggle in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns is truly a work of
Archetypes are part of a theory of “collective consciousness” proposed by Carl Jung. According to some, “the archetype has no form of its own, but it acts as an “organizing principle” on the things we see or do” (Boeree). There quite a few of these archetypes that can apply to media such as movies and pieces of literature. There are even archetypes present in video games, just as there are in literature. Examples of archetypes can be seen in the Pokemon video game series.
Gotham Thomas and Martha Wayne are killed before young Bruce Wayne's eyes. Even though the hopeful Gotham City Police Dept. criminologist James Gordon & Harvey Bullock, appear to understand the case rapidly, things are not all that basic. Motivated by Bruce, Gordon promises to find the criminals. At the same time, young Bruce watches this war that would one day compel him to look for his own efforts against the evils in Gotham and he’ll appear as ‘The Batman’ as he’ll get ready for the coming wars.
Bruce Wayne was a poor kid from a poor city. His family was killed and he decides to fight crime, similar to Spider Man. Only Batman, some how got extremely rich to own his own cave, custom Bat Mobile, and have some sweet gadgets. I don’t know a lot about Batman, but I know enough that money doesn’t grow on trees. Besides, even if he did get the money reasonably, there would be other flaws. For example, there is no way he built his car him self. He had to have had a body shop customize it. And if this were the case, it wouldn’t be too hard for Joker or someone to find out...
For Batman, he is a famous person with high social class. His image is a successful businessman and on the other hand he is a hero to save the city. He is very strong and well body shape. When he catches the thief, he acts independently. He will not ask for help and refuse the others involve although he gets hurt. He is very clever and very calm. He will first plan before he takes action.
After the hearing, Bruce planned on killing Joe Chill at gunpoint like how his parents were killed, but a blonde female reporter who worked for Carmine Falcone (Tom Wilkinson) killed Mr. Chill before he could get the chance. Shortly after the death of Mr. Chill, he told his now older childhood friend Rachel Dawes (Katie Holmes) what he almost did After realizing what he was about to do, Bruce Wayne disappeared and traveled the far east where he was mentored in martial arts by Henri Ducard (Liam Neeson) who is late revealed to be Ra’s Al Ghul. When asked what he sought, Bruce answered, “I seek the means to fight injustice. To turn fear against those who prey on the fearful.” When Bruce returned to Gotham he had a plan to save it with the help of Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman) and one of the very few uncorrupted cops in Gotham, Jim Gordan (Gary Oldman).
