Such statements invoke multiple questions on the mind of a person as he or she tries to find the reason behind them. Nevertheless, the narrator’s concluding expression appears to give much insight into his mind and resolutions. The statement "Gazing up into the darkness I saw myself as a creature driven and derided by vanity, and my eyes burned with anguish and anger (Joyce 21)" prompts the reader to see the narrator from a different perspective. His failure to find a gift at the marketplace makes him realize the vanity in his mania for Mangan's sister. Foremost he arrived late at the marketplace, failed to get a gift for the girl he loved, felt that the merchants ridiculed him, and finally ended up in a dark room (Joyce 20). All the occurrences left him with a feeling of disparage and a sense of vanity in his efforts. The theme of escapism is evident in the last statement of the story as the narrator comes back from the fantasy world. According to Vance, escapism occurs when one engages in imagination to get distracted from the reality (150). In Araby, the narrator’s infatuation with Mangan’s sister symbolizes the light in his dark life. “She was waiting for us, her figure defined by the light from the half opened door… I stood by the railing looking at her. Her dress swung as if she moved her body and the soft rope of her hair teased from side to side…the light from the lamp opposite our door caught white curve of her neck, lit up her hair”(Joyce 4). The narrator is hiding while gazing at her from his window, compelled by her appearance to continue watching her. He illustrates her as if she is the only light in the street, therefore she is the only light in his dark life. The way the narrator describes Mangan’s sister comprises her to seem like she has an encompassed radiance around her and that theres only darkness behind her. The short story “Araby” by James Joyce is told by what seems to be the first person point of view of a boy who lives just north of Dublin. As events unfold the boy struggles with dreams versus reality. From the descriptions of his street and neighbors who live close by, the reader gets an image of what the boy’s life is like. His love interest also plays an important role in his quest from boyhood to manhood. The final trip to the bazaar is what pushes him over the edge into a foreshadowed realization. The negative connotations associated with the city of Dublin are used to illustrate the narrator's state of hopelessness. It is only through his illusions that he is able to catch a glimpse of light amidst the darkness.
The boy is haplessly subject to the city’s dark, despondent conformity, and his tragic thirst for the unusual in the face of a monotonous, disagreeable reality, forms the heart of the story. The narrator’s ultimate disappointment occurs as a result of his awakening to the world around him and his eventual recognition and awareness of his own existence within that miserable setting. The gaudy superficiality of the bazaar, which in the boy’s mind had been an “oriental enchantment,” shreds away his protective blindness and leaves him alone with the realization that life and love contrast sharply from his dream (Joyce). No longer can the boy overlook the surrounding prejudice, dramatized by his aunt’s hopes that Araby, the bazaar he visited, is not “some Freemason affair,” and by the satirical and ironic gossiping of Mrs. Mercer while collecting stamps for “some pious purpose” (Joyce). "Araby" is a short complex story by Joyce that I believe is a reflection of his own life as a boy growing up in Dublin. Joyce uses the voice of a young boy as a narrator; however the narrator seems much more mature then the boy in the story. The story focuses on escape and fantasy; about darkness, despair, and enlightenment: and I believe it is a retrospective of Joyce's look back at life and the constant struggle between ideals and reality.
