I have always been enamored by business: The allure of working hard and reaping the rewards of it has stirred within me a passion of which I have never tired. This fervor has influenced me to apply to the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where I believe I can be a valuable asset to the college while it in turn prepares me to face the challenges and opportunities that both the domestic and international economies present.
Though my high school classes have given me a solid foundation in many of the basic principles of economics, I have been left yearning to glean more knowledge about the business world. Wharton’s remarkable academic record makes it my first choice in attaining greater insight into the inner workings of business. Wharton’s courses in business management are especially appealing to me, for they will allow me to develop the leadership skills I have developed over the years and channel them into the business realm.
Because of my affinity towards business, I invest a significant amount of time reading articles from a variety of sources with topics such as...
While other children watched their favorite cartoon or played their favorite video game, reading business articles and watching the fluctuations seen in the stock market enthralled me. Renowned leaders in the business world have always been of interest to me, specifically Warren Buffet. My favorite quote by Buffet is “It’s better to hang out with people better than you. Pick out associates whose behavior is better than you and you’ll drift in that direction.” By attending CMU, I would personify this quote. Growing up, my parents have instilled into me, many essential values, such as working hard and “being the best me I could be.” I have always expected a lot from myself, but high expectations from my parents and close friends, have increased my work ethic and lifted my goals and aspirations even higher. For that reason, I hope to challenge myself through the prestigious Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Science’s economics curriculum. The undergraduate economics program would prepare me for a vast array of careers. Jobs in policy, law, and business are all possible, or if one desires to go to some sort of post graduate school, that is also possible. By having such a top-notch education, I would surely be closer to achieving my goal of receiving my MBA from Tepper. In making all this possible, a wide range of classes must be made available. Classes that are available in just about any economics curriculum, like Intermediate Economics, are also available here, but classes like Behavioral Economics and Global Electronic Markets are what makes CMU unique. Another attractive aspect of CMU is the jointly administered economics degree by Dietrich and Tepper. I feel this will make for a solid foundation in the field of econo...
An interest in business and agricultural studies has always taken some form throughout my life, whether it was running a farm in seventh grade, building a mentoring program during freshmen year or acting as the treasurer for National Honors Society. At first I was learning to grow a variety of fruits and vegetables and then determining how to sell them in order to achieve a net profit. Later I studied how to successfully construct a budget for a new mentoring class at our school and this year I have studied the complex theories of economics and management taking place on a worldwide scale. These experiences have built my passion for Applied Economics and Management at Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Sciences. This specific college has the classes and professors that demonstrate the same interests I am looking for in college. Although I have already gained a great amount of business knowledge, my studies have also taught me about the endless approaches and lenses in which you can view a business problem. Whether it be to delve into the mind of the consumer and understand what mak...
Penn as an institution is powerfully driven by a nonpareil dedication to medical research. As a firm believer of a well rounded education, I feel pragmatism, community service, and research should accompany an education, and Penn I perceive follows the initiative through wholly.
While studying at the University of Washington, Smith decided to take time off to work as an engineer for Boeing Enterprises. During his tenure, he recalls rows and rows of engineers sitting at their desks, reminding him of the assembly line. Seeing this unattractive future, he decided to switch to a Business orientation and eventually enrolled into Harvard Business School in pursuant of an M.B.A. (Smith).
With the aid provided through the Chevron International Reach Scholarship, Calvin College Honors Scholarship, and the Van Beek Business Scholarship, I could once again see a light at the end of the tunnel. In August 2012, I had the opportunity to pursue my college degree at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Amidst the culture shock, homesickness and diversity, one thing that stood out to me was the business dynamics in the United States. After extensive conversations with students and professors in the Business Department, I realized what my mother had lacked in the formation of her business—a Business Plan. In that moment, it occurred to me that there are infinite opportunities for improvement in the business sector in Nigeria, in which individuals would rather “wing it” than plan
Education has always been a primary concern for my parents, who taught me that if I need to succeed in life, I have to be educated. Following their guide, I have always valued and tried to get the most of any educational opportunity I have had. Having grown up in a business family, I have always been interested in focusing my career in the business field. My Mother and Father own their own company, and they are constantly talking about business, which has inspired me to follow their path. When my parents retire, they want me to carry on their legacy. For this reason, I have decided to pursue my studies in the field of Business and Leadership at Marylhurst University. I want to pursue a well-rounded education at this established university where I also can have life experiences in the outside world, which will ultimately help me to become a successful leader in our family business.
Over the year big businesses have taken control of the world’s economy, but success didn’t come easily. As Razor Suleman said in his article, “Success in a business happens because of successful employees, successful business managers.”(1) Something that I learned as the time pass is that when we grow we pick up things from the world; things that stay with us and make us who we are. When I was a child , I remember dreaming about having my own marketing company. A company where I, as the business manager, could take control of it and do wonderful things. My inspiration came from my parents. They are probably one of the best non degreed business manager. Being so close to them gave me the motivation to want to become a business manager.
On the first day at my new job right after graduation, the Vice President asked me why I became a structural engineer. My answer was “I want to contribute to society and my local community using my strengths in numbers and analytical thinking.” This answer has never changed to this day.
My interest in business grew over the years. Gradually, I found out new things about how businesses ran and how different people work together and play different roles in a business. Over my high-school years I have taken several elective courses that I found interesting. I took a business course in Grade 10 where I learnt about the basic fundamentals of business. During that course, I learnt in detail about the basics and different sectors of business. Apart from school, I tried to explore how businesses worked in real life. When I had went to buy my guitar I was amazed at the store. Steve’s Music Store was a massive place where a large number of people worked, attending customers, keeping track of the equipment, maintaining storage, etc. I met and talked to the manager of the store to describe my awe at how he managed to run this huge business with so many people working together, each playing a different role. Watching TV programs like ‘Dragon’s Den’ or ‘Undercover Boss Canada’ inspired me even more. I was fascinated at how people came up with innovative ideas and how they manage all the people who are working in their business.

Among all the programs available, I firmly believe that the Master in Finance program at Princeton University will be the ideal preparation for my career because of its strong emphasis on quantitative techniques with practical business problem solving. Often times, I can’t help but wonder what my life would be like if I haven’t been exposed to the world of business; a wonderful career that changed my life completely. I have taken interest in business career because I love calculating numbers and interacting with people; But most importantly, my fascination in business came from my grandfather. He taught me many valuable tips on how to be a successful person, and most certainly how to run a business. He was not only a successful businessman, but also a respected individual. One of the businesses that he owned was a company called “Wu Long Tea Factory”. The main thing that they produce is tea of course, but they also have products such as cakes, candies, and all kinds of stuff. By being the production manager’s assistant of this company, I was able to experience everything that was going on in the factory. Even though that was the background I grew up in, my biggest fascination wasn’t in being a manager in a factory; it was the finance part that got me all excited. Often times I can even see myself sitting in my office and work on clients’ financial profiles and statements. I also took extra math classes and participated in many of the competitions in order to prepare myself to succeed in this particular field. Other things that I also did to get me well prepared are joining school activities, applying internships, and having jobs. I believe that all my hard work will pay off, when I see myself as a successful businessman.
