From the time I was little, I remember listening to Selena. On the car ride to my grandma's house, on our way to Spokane to run errands, and even helping my mom clean our house. There is one song in particular called “Como La Flor” that I used to listen to over and over again to the point of my mom taking my tiny 7th generation Apple Nano iPod away so she could have peace and quiet. The lyrics of the song are nice to listen to and the meaning is even better. This is one of her most popular songs and one of the songs that really kick started her career as a musician. The song itself is about heartbreak and learning how to face your feelings, and move on from someone you love. The lyrics of the song start by saying “Yo sé que tienes un nuevo …show more content…
Her husband Chris was a member of the band before Selena and him got together and they later began secretly dating, they were eventually caught and her father kicked him out of the band and forbade them from seeing each other. In the process of not seeing each other, this song was made and with the lyrics “Con tu adiós, te llevas mi corazón porque no sé si pueda volver a amar porque te di todo el amor que pude dar” meaning “with your goodbye, you take my heart because I don't know if I can love again, I gave you all the love I could give.” When Selena and Chris got caught dating, her dad threatened to have the band Because Chris was her first and only love, she felt that she would never love someone as much as she loved him, so the lyrics match her true feelings. It’s one song I can really listen to any amount of times and still want to hear it more and more, even in times like cleaning my house or my room. This is one of my favorite songs and the lyrics are …show more content…
And I gave the best that I could, and I tried to be the best role model, and the best person that I could, and I tried to help out.” It’s odd, I remember my third grade teacher showing us that quote on our little projector and it became a quote I think of often. She wanted to be known as a role model, as someone who gave her all and tried her best in everything she did and that she was. You can look back on videos of her performances and she has some of the most uplifting stage presence I've seen in my almost 18 years of existence. Her most memorable and one of my personal favorite performances was her last concert at the Astrodome in 1995. She was a person who loved what she did, she helped bring Mexican and American music together and she performed with everything she had. Her personality was something that people would want to look back on, she was honest, positive and she was kind and she is the kind of person that people find as a role model. Selena played a big role in my growing up and without her I don’t think I would have as many important memories I have with my family, to me she’s someone I look up to and I hope I can be half the person and role model she was. Her music changed the music industry
My first knowledge of her came from the movie that was produced about her life. This movie included her childhood, her rise to fame, her relationships with her family and her husband, and her untimely death. She was a stunning flower that bloomed very young and kept growing with no sight on stopping. She had a gorgeous appearance. She had big brown eyes, ever changing hair styles, and a petite figure. Her husband was just as cute. A smaller guy but not too small. Selena and Chris fit together like two pieces of a puzzle. I developed a deep admiration for these two people and the things they experienced in their youth. I was always looking to learn more about their lives and what happened in Selena's tragic end that shook the world. After finding out that her widow wrote a book about her life, I was excited to get it and begin reading. I wondered if the movie had been completely valid. What did the movie leave out? How did Chris felt about her death? How does he feel now about all that transpired after Selena's death since this was not a perspective that the audience got to clearly see the movie? So, I went immediately, to buy the
Selena’s death sent “shockwaves” across the Latin community as well as the English-language. Tens of thousands went to her funeral to pay their respect to her and her family. After her death, Selena’s first English album, “Dreaming of You”, was released and became a huge hit. They made a movie of her biography in 1997, starring Jennifer Lopez as Selena and James Edward Olmos as her father. Thousands of people visit her grave, Mirador de la Flor, in Corpus Christi, near the Selena Museum dedicated to her life, fame, and career. Even today, she’s still considered “La Reina de Tejano” and her legacy still lives on.
Selena Quintanilla Pérez was a famous woman Tex-Mex singer. Her life was filled with music, singing, joy, and fame. She had many accomplishments in her musical career. Unfortunately, she lived a short life and her music career wasn't as long as she would've hoped. Shot by her fan club president, Selena died at the age of 23. She may not have had a long music career, but she will go down as one of the most famous woman Tejano singers in history, known as the “Queen of Tejano Music”.

The Tejano music genre is originated from Texas but it may be called Tex-Mex because of its Mexican background. Selena absolutely loved her fans so she went to great lengths in order to keep her fans happy. (Biography 1) The brink of her successful career was short lived due to a traumatic murder caused by the betrayal of Yolanda Saldivar. Selena was a Tejano artist that changed the style of music by uniting a clash of several cultures and therefore leaving a mark in history even after her death. (Texas 2)
Selena was Tejano and female. This caused her to not be viewed as important as male artists. Around this time is when Selena gained fame. After the Mexican-American war, Tejano’s were thought to be inferior to Anglo’s and were often controlled by them as well. At the time Selena became famous, the U.S. was having domestic problems with Latinos. With her being a female and Latina is was not easy for her to gain fame and fans at the time when not many people were into Latino’s. However, with Selena’s amazing talent she was able to gain fame in a male dominated Tejano music business.
These attributes gave her the key to working with the most notable producers, script writers and musical producers in the history of Broadway. Her many shows gave her the opportunity to understand herself as a Broadway actress and her voice stands alone to all of the people who followed. Her voice will live on in theaters and she will continue to remain a pinnacle of Broadway history.
Whenever I play this song, I can’t help but remember my childhood. My parents struggled financially but, that was never an excuse for them. They always took my brothers and I out on small adventures. One of the most memorable memories I get when I play this song is when my parents would take us out to park to have a barbecue, while my brothers and I ran through the park till we became tired and hungry. Whenever I need a break from the world, I listen to this song just to remind myself of those special moments, even though those days won’t ever return, they are memories I will always treasure.
Known as the “Queen of Tejano” and the “Mexican Madonna”, Selena Quintanilla-Perez was the adored Latin singer who sadly did not get to live to see all of the success of her career. One of her most famous quotes is, “We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever but to create something that will (PhilosIblog, 2014).” That is just what Selena did and she made sure that her legacy would live on for years. Selena surely left a her mark in this world with the help of her family, in her short lived 23 years. Selena Quintanilla-Perez is an influential person because of her loving personality, her music career, her determination to succeed in a genre that was only men, and her success with her music that will never stop playing even if she is not here.
...ng to this day, she is one of few who could compete with the men of hip-hop, but she never pretended to be anything but a woman. She not only sang about female empowerment, but she wrote about being a woman from the insecurities that we as women sometimes feel to the nirvana of being in love. Sensuality and femininity were always as important to her which was her strength, and message to get out to women especially those of color.
Not only a great singer, she taught herself how to play the guitar and the harp, and

“You'll never do a whole lot unless you're brave enough to try”-Dolly Parton. Most people only know her because of her music, which is very inspirational, however she has done so much more. She is always looking for ways to give back because she knows what it like to not have much. She loves to help kids in need. Dolly Parton is one of the most inspirational people in the world, and her influence has affected so many people that her legacy will live on long after she's gone.
For me it all started out with Selena. I remember a boy in my middle school class dedicating me "Como La Flor" at one of our school dances in seventh grade. After that Tejano just sort of stuck in my head and all I ever thought of the song was that I had rejected that boy. Selena was quite a Tejana star at the time, and I was shocked with her murder two years later. She was a five star role model for Mexican-Americans to relate to and appreciate. Her songs live on in the Tejano world, as does her sprit and love for the music.
