The periods of 1200-1450 and 1450-1700 were polar opposites for a multitude of reasons but the most important reasons the two were different were, the invention of the printing press, the enlightenment, along with one man, Martin Luther. These three things changed the course of world history and brought upon a period that led to the updating of human nature at a previously unseen rate. They challenged what was though prior to 1450, and helped humanity to develop and expand. Without the printing press, the Enlightenment, and Martin Luther we would be living similar to the people of the time did, 500 years later. The printing press allowed anything to be spread throughout the world with relative ease, and for cheap. Prior to the 1436 invention by Johannes Gutenberg, books were written BY HAND, by the priests and scholars of the time which meant knowledge was limited, and the spreading of news would take much longer. Without the printing press Martin Luther would never had been able to spread his ideals throughout the world. The printing press made it easier for males, and sometimes women to get educated, this still did …show more content…
The Enlightenment challenged what was previously thought to be the way of life. Prior to the Enlightenment whatever you were born into that was it, you were stuck and had no say in if you could receive power or money, you were the king’s subject, but the Enlightenment changed the role of the people from subject to citizen. This switch gave the people abilities that were never seen before 1450. It became a change and with the movement from subject to citizen, questions started surfacing and with those questions came action, and with that action came a new era for human rights. Human rights were improved across the board, from African Americans to women to the citizen. Without the Enlightenment some powers that needed to be changed like that of slavery may never had been
Ever wanted to find out what consequences the printing press had on exploration and reformation? Well, you can find out right here. To start off with, the printing press was invented in the 1450’s by Johannes Gutenberg. The idea was not new because in 600 CE the Chinese introduced woodblock printing. They even did a little experimenting with movable wooden blocks but with 50,000 characters it was impossible to carve. One of the reasons Gutenberg was so successful was that the alphabet at the time was much less than 50,000, which was much more realistic when carving. In about 1455 Gutenberg had about 180 bibles that were over 1800 pages long printed, by the year 1500 more than 20 million books had been printed, and by 1600 over 200 million books were in existence. The big question is though, which was the more important consequence of the printing press the reformation or exploration? Reformation was an important consequence of the printing press. However, an even more important consequence was exploration.
Many of us complain about the tough hours we work or the amount of chores we have to complete, but think about the truly harsh conditions that young girls and women had to work in the textile industry with very little pay and no accolades. Back in the 18th century, when the Industrial Revolution struck, it made it hard for female mill workers to enjoy being employed. Due to the terrible working conditions, the amount of hours worked, and the low wages were a few of the similarities that the female mill workers in England and Japan shared.
The Enlightenment was a great upheaval in the culture of the colonies- an intellectual movement of the late 17th and 18th centuries which emphasized logic and reason over tradition. Enlightenment thinkers believed that men and women could move civilization to ever greater heights through the power of their own reason. The Enlightenment encouraged men and women to look to themselves, instead of God, for guidance as to how to live their lives and shape society. It also evoked a new appreciation and
(Hook) Throughout the history of man, there has been numerous achievements in human communication that have changed lives greatly. (Bridge) One of the milestones in communication was the printing press. (Background Info) In 1450, Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press in Germany. By 1600, more than 200 million books had come off the presses. Therefore, an average person living in Europe at the time could own a book, such as a copy of the Bible. As the number of books being produced increased, the literacy rate increased as well. As a result, people started to read and explore topics such as science, religion, and geography. The printing press led to a major price drop in books, more knowledge learned, and many significant events in history, such as the Age of Exploration and the Reformation. (Thesis) I believe that the most crucial consequence of the printing press was the Age of Exploration.
The modern world is linked through networks of communication and exchange between peoples. These exchanges between regions has changed cultures, economics, and politics. Through time the cultural influence between regions has consisted of many factors and elements but comes down to the spread of religion and religious teachings , movement of peoples, technological and cultural advancements affecting trade and commerce. Beginning with the Middle Ages in the years 1100-1500 , Africa, Asia, and Europe developed and influenced each other in several different ways. Starting with religion. The birth of Islam in the Middle East rapidly spread throughout Afro- Eurasia. Islam was attractive to people who were uninterested in the requirements of Christianity and the Church.
The Enlightenment political thought helped the Glorious Revolution of 1688 in England. James II wanted to strengthen his royal power alone and weaken the militia while raising his own army. The Enlightenment helped the English opponent to come forth and overthrow their king with the help of the Prince William of Orange and his wife Mary. They then reestablished the monarchy and accepted the Parliaments Bill of Rights. With the Enlightenment period, individuals helped get their words out and they learned to questions their ideals and beliefs. With the Glorious Revolution of 1688, the individuals were able to overthrown their king and establish the representative government and that a well-regulated militia under the locals control was best for everyone. The Enlightenment political thought helped the Glorious Revolution to establish a representative government and take control on what’s best for
The Enlightenment itself ignited the changes in perspective that were needed to provoke improvement in society and set new standards for our future. These standards spread rather rapidly across Europe and eventually to America and challenged the old order. These ideas of rational thinking over religion and authority delivered a vast political change throughout the world which can still be felt today. These revolutionary thoughts of rationalism brought on freedom of speech and the demand for equality in society. This was not only the igniter to the French revolution but was also, how many governments including the United States based their modern
The first printing press was created to make books (Mostly bibles in the day) cheaper and more accessible. At this time only nobles and scribes new how to read and write. In result of this press, written pieces became commonplace making the common people needing to know how to read and write. This literacy spread and spread as the printing press became more common and caused the majority of the world’s people to be as literate as it is today which helped to revolutionize the work
The development of printing from movable type medal was invented in 1450. The renaissance was the first time European civilizations had access to printing. The art of printing made an immediate impact on European intellectual life and thought. The printing of books encouraged the development of scholarly research and the desire to attain knowledge. Printing also stimulated the development of an ever-expanding lay reading public, which had a huge impact on European society. Also, without the printing press, the new religious ideas of the reformation would never have spread as rapidly as they did in the 16th century. A primary source from the impact of printing is the Gutenberg Bible. The first substantial book printed in the West. It was the first Bible that had been printed. This is significant because now middle class individuals can not only own books, but expand their knowledge on religion, as well as learn to read. In the middle ages, books had been cost and education rare; only the clergy had been regular readers sand owners of books. Books were hand-written by scribes or monks and many people did not learn how to read in the Middle Ages. Books were also written in Latin, a language in which only the most educated people could understand. In the renaissance, the educated middle class could now afford books having a choice of choosing different languages. The impact of the printing press not
Just imagine having no women’s rights, an over controlling government, someone telling you what to buy and where to buy it, and religious intolerance. Before the Enlightenment, also known as the Age of Reason, these were the norms. During the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe, educated thinkers like Mary Wollstonecraft, John Locke, Adam Smith, and Voltaire questioned the standards of society. These educated thinkers were called philosophers because they believed in bettering their communities by understanding human nature. The Enlightenment promoted freedom for all people and encouraged them to question the social criteria for women, government, economics, and religion through natural rights and a social contract.
The Enlightenment encouraged people to question divine right, the God-given authority rulers claimed to have (Enlightenment, Its Origins and the French Revolution 15). Finally, it made the third estate realize how the taxation was simply greed. It made their eyes open to the fact that they were paying taxes so the state, clergy, and nobles wouldn’t suffer financially.... ... middle of paper ...
The enlightenment idea gave us freedom of independent learning and the ability to express and expand our thoughts. Without the enlightenment being born, the world would not have progressed the way it has. Many people not knowing that the power of knowledge was initiated by the enlightenment idea did not agree with it at first because they did not know how beneficial it would become to the world. Everything we have today such as new medicines, machines, and astronomy can all be referred back to a part of
Enlightenment thinkers have a large influence on society and government. Enlightenment thinker’s ideas have caused revolutions and the birth of governments. Many societies have these thinkers to thank for all of the rights they now have. Without these thinkers putting the ideas of the rights of the people in the heads of the people suffering from tyranny, there may not have been change in people’s rights.
It has been said that the once the type for a page of a book had been set, then the press could do the work of any of the best monks in Europe (Calliope 21.8). The invention of the printing press is considered a great leap forward that allowed the common man or woman to think for themselves. The press allowed the mass production of books and the circulation of books to form their own conclusions. A man in Iowa could buy a Quran and read it, and then from there he could make the decision to convert to Islam.
*Transition- The invention of Gutenberg’s printing press changed everything. In fact, the invention is what brought civilization out of these “Dark Ages” and into the Pre-Industrial Period that is often referred to as the “Renaissance”.
