Some societies are built entirely on traditions. These traditions have affected economies, government, and even literature. The literature is affected by the different traditions and has helped to develop certain writing techniques. Traditions have been around for so long that younger children may not know there existence. How do expect younger generations to know about these traditions if they are not talked about? Children do not know why these traditions happen; they just know what they have done since they were little. For this reason, Tita does know about the tradition that she has to take care of her mother until a man was going to ask for her hand in marriage. Rosaura and Gertrudis never question why they do these so-called traditions.
Laura Esquivel uses magical realism to give the reader a better perspective on these traditions. Magical realism is a literary tool that authors use to fuse two realities in their writing. Magical realism can help the reader understand the deeper meaning that traditions have. Without having the author to just come out and say the meaning of what they are actually trying to

Especially not Rosaura. That took longer than it should have; the batter would not thicken because Tita kept crying. She was so wrapped up in her thoughts that she did not notice that all around her something very strange was taking place. The moment they took their first bit of the cake, everyone was flooded with a great wave of longing”.(Esquivel, ) These lines show that the author used magical realism to show that because of this one tradition Tita uses her emotions to make everyone feel what she feels when they eat her food. If the tradition did not exist, Tita would never have effect the people at her sister’s wedding like that. This one tradition is the cause Tita to uses her magic whenever she has a strong feeling and is

Tita, again, has the responsibility of caring for her.
Magical realism is a genre in which extraordinary events are incorporated into the ordinary world, usually referred to as realistic fiction. In Latin American culture many authors use this type of literature to describe phenomenal events that occur within our ordinary world. Magical realism can be analyzed through different novels, short stories and movies, for example, Bless me, Ultima, by Rudolfo Anaya, “The Night Face Up,” by Julio Cortazar, “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings,” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and the movie Big Fish by Tim Burton. Magical realism is a style of writing used to link the abnormal with the ordinary.
An essential difference, then, between realism and magical realism involves the intentionality implicit in the conventions of the two modes…realism intends its version of the world as a singular version, as an objective (hence ...
Tita’s raw emotion through her crying demonstrates how she wishes to be liberated from Mama Elena, and foreshadows the calamity of those attending the wedding. Wedding cake traditionally represents good fortune. In a surrealistic way, through magical realism, Tita’s tears found within the cake caused the entirety of the wedding party, including the bride Rosaura, to become greatly sickened to the point of vomiting. Her tears also caused the party to start crying, because they felt her sorrow. The cake serves as Tita’s vengeance against the wicked Mama Elena and Rosaura, even though she did not intend the outcome.

In today's society, many young adults find entertainment and freedom in the form of literature. Not the horribly dry and slow writings that our preceding generations found enjoyment in, but instead a new strain of literature. It can be easily observed that book's themes have often changed to better accommodate the current generation growing up, and this principle can easily be applied to the books of modern society. An example of the evolution of books over time is that today books have changed from being a one hit wonder, too a series spread over several years. Some of the modern-day texts that are popular amount the younger generation include series such as The Hunger Games, Divergent, Maze Runner, Twilight, and Harry Potter. Despite the changing format of books, they still have the same goal of trying to teach us important lessons and skills to be applied during our lifetimes. Modern literature often times is what highlights the most important and influential characteristics affecting our society.
In order to see how Magical Realism is found in this treatment, one must first consider at least one of the identifying marks of Magical Realism. Among the characteristics that identify Magical Realism is the feeling of transcendence that the reader has while reading a Magical Realist text (Simpkins 150). During transcendence, a reader senses something that is beyond the real world. At the same time, however, the reader still feels as if he or she were rooted in the world (Sandner 52). After the reader undergoes transcendence, then he or she should have a different outlook on life.
But when Mama Elena left the Kitchen and went to bed, Nacha embraced Tita and told her that she can now cry so that she won’t have to cry at the day of the wedding and she did. Tita kept crying that her tears fell in the cake batter which caused it to be baked longer than it should have. Another is when they were preparing for the filling of the cake. Tita went to the room wherein Chencha and Gertrudis were embroidering a white French silk sheet with delicate pattern in the center of it and an opening designed to reveal only the bride’s intimate parts which is going to be used for the wedding night. Tita stood in there and gazed in the whiteness of the sheet long enough that caused sort of a blindness to her and caused her to be afraid of the whiteness of some other things and reminded her of snow-white images from her childhood but she still prepared the filling of the cake.

Today’s society makes myself wonder, why must I take courses in literature? Literature is a crucial course which adds color to life. It allows me to laugh and dream while it builds suspense for what to expect ahead. It might just be a read but it enables me to feel emotions and allows me to see the world from a different perspective. It allows me to see the social norms in society, along with providing society with a light of guidance. However, reading literature not only benefits one in gaining knowledge, but aids in breaking barriers between cultural norms and stereotypes with the bitter truth which allows others to appreciate past history.
