What is Literature? The definition of “literature” has never been a consistent one. For some, literature can be as broadly defined as the word “rhetoric”; yet others prefer a more definitive interpretation, limited to certain media with explicit qualifications. Literature, and its definition, it seems, are hidden in a dark, nebulous haze of uncertainty. However, the truth is that the definition of literature can be easily derived from modern-day concept, context, and from the word itself.
Whenever there is confusion, in any aspect of life, humans often find ourselves turning to professionals or authority figures for help. The confusion associated with asking such an open-ended
To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic novel written by Harper Lee. The novel is set in the depths of the Great Depression. A lawyer named Atticus Finch is called to defend a black man named Tom Robinson. The story is told from one of Atticus’s children, the mature Scout’s point of view. Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, the Finch Family faces many struggles and difficulties. In To Kill a Mockingbird, theme plays an important role during the course of the novel. Theme is a central idea in a work of literature that contains more than one word. It is usually based off an author’s opinion about a subject. The theme innocence should be protected is found in conflicts, characters, and symbols.
As a precursor, the common understanding needs to be reached that: literature is an art, and has many mediums. Medium is the material or technique with which an artist works (Dictionary.com), for example: photographs, pastels, canvas, paper, ink, etc... There are technical, recreational, and otherwise artistic uses for all mediums. A small child taking pictures of a puppy with a disposable camera, a reporter taking precise pictures of a sporting event, and an artist taking close-up pictures of the dew as it drips off a tree are all different uses of the same medium in photography. Literature can be created with many different intentions and reasons, but the attempt to determine that something is not art based off of the motivation or intentions of the artist is quit meaningless.
In a country like the United States of America, with a history of every individual having an equal opportunity to reach their dreams, it becomes harder and harder to grasp the reality that equal opportunity is diminishing as the years go on. The book Our Kids by Robert Putnam illustrates this reality and compares life during the 1950’s and today’s society and how it has gradually gotten to a point of inequality. In particular, he goes into two touching stories, one that shows the changes in the communities we live in and another that illustrates the change of family structure. In the end he shows how both stories contribute to the American dream slipping away from our hands.
The Testing, a story by Joelle Charbonneau, is a story about a group of friends who get tested by the government to test how they act and how smart they are.. The plot of this story starts when Malencia Vale graduates high school and gets picked to go to a series of tests created by her government to see if she is smart enough to go to their university, but when she finishes the first test she realizes there is more to it than just being smart it is also about how you act under pressure, then as she goes to the last trial to pass into the university she starts to understand the tests are actually about if you have the skills necessary to be a good leader and if you will do whatever it takes, the story ends when she passes the test and

In “Why Literature Matters” the author, Dana Gioia, argues that literature is very important in today’s society. He talks about the decline of reading over the years and the effects it has on different companies and communities. Gioia uses many persuasive techniques, such as evidence, jingoism, and diction, to try and persuade the reader that literature is important.
Literature was a term used to describe written or spoken material. The term was most commonly used to refer to words of the creative imagination including works of Poetry, drama, fiction and non-fiction. Literature was one of the fine arts like music and painting. It was, fundamentals, an expression of life through the medium of language. Literature was composed of books which were of great human interest due to their subject matter and mode of presentation. A proper study of literature involves the study of its history, the biography of the author and the ethos of the age and society in which it was produced. Thus literature becomes a study of history. Literature gives an insight into their mental spiritual and moral condition.
My perception of literature is anything written by an author for the consumption of an audience. By my own definition literature should include literary works from throughout the ages, but for some reason the word literature conjures up images of “Dante’s Inferno”, “Romeo, and Juliet”, and “Gone with the Wind”. After reading how literature is described in “The Norton Introduction to Literature”, I gained a deeper view of what literature is. There are many forms of literature including oral literature, graphic novels, and comic strips. Critically thinking about literature is important to the world because it allows you to explore a story from the point of view of the writer. When not just reading, but thinking about what you read you can gain
In creating a novel, the author must at least know the concept and ideas on literature in order to have a ideas regarding to narrative writing. As we all know, literature can be found everywhere when it comes to regular activities. In fact, Literature is used in our daily basis therefore literature is part of our life no matter what. When studying history, books, documents, and files are used. Those forms are the exact literature itself, it contains in any sorts of languages which contain letters and numbers. Other sorts of symbols are considered to be literature itself. Poems, declamation, oratorical are a form of literature. Pieces, symphony, and movements are also a form of literature to musicians in order for them to understand the very concept of music itself. Painting, drawing, and sketching are also forms of literature which is a language that is only understood by artists and critics.
How do we begin to define an immense subject such as literature? We may refer to dictionaries and find scholars explaining literature simply as any written piece of work, but those definitions do not even begin to scratch the surface of what this entity we call literature truly is. In order to understand the true concept of it you must delve into it yourself. Personally, after reading many novels, stories, and poems, I have come to the realization that literature is not just a boring subject we study in school. Through many stories and the work of Northrop Frye, I have realized how literature has no boundaries because it is built by human imagination and anything can be broken down, even time, by imagination (Frye 80). Literature has allowed me to travel countless miles, experience catastrophic events, and feel a
Literature has many purposes, and opens doors to unique worlds. Through Literature, we discover ourselves and world time and again.
In communication, words are used to convey situations, events and information. Literature is an area of knowledge that teaches us different words and uses of vocabulary to enable us to communicate our knowledge on a subject. We would have no knowledge of certain concepts if we did not have knowledge of the word or its meaning. In this way, vocabulary can also shape what we know. For example, a child can only understand things that can be described in a very basic v...

It is not easy to define literature. Definition of what “true literature” is has always been under a scanner. For different people, literature comes with a different meaning and a whole set of new explanations. All words that appear on paper are not part of literature. General definition of literature for a graduate student means that he is going to study drama, poetry and novel during the duration of his course. Without the support of a strong and good language, good literature is not possible. And by using the word “language” we commonly understand that it is all about correct usage of punctuation, a good command over vocabulary and well-formed sentences to capture a reader’s attention.
