My junior year of high school was not one of the easiest years of my life. As a matter of fact, i think so far, it's been my hardest. Especially because of my AP English class. I had several other AP classes and honors classes, but this one seemed to be my greatest struggle. I am one of the very few people who enjoy and are actually great at mathematics. It is my favorite subject, closely followed by science. I always look forward to going to these classes. I also find an interest in government, which is why I currently take AP Government and politics. Back on the English track, I've never been much of a reader or writer, it's just something that I'm not very well at doing. Last year in AP English, I had a wonderful teacher who goes by the name of Mrs.Stagg. …show more content…
If you ask most students to describe her, they'll most likely say that she's mean and too strict and they prefer not to be in her class.
However, when I think of Mrs.Stagg, I see the perfect figure of a teacher, or at least the closest you'll ever get to perfect. She's headstrong and her way of teaching helps us learn and actually get our work accomplished. When I first started off the year in her class, it was tough. We would constantly receive papers to write and on a 9 point scale, I always ended up scoring around a 4. I tried to find ways to improve but it just wasn't working for me. Around half way through the year, I went up to her and I told her that I could not continue to take this course because I was not improving and having a C- was not helping out my GPA. That day that I went to her after school to tell her the news of me dropping, she looked at me and said “Do you really want to quit.” She was staring at me with a look of empathy in a way. I looked at her and I could not deny the truth from her. I told her that I didn't want to quit, but I didn't know what else to do. I sat with her and had a deep long conversation. Long story short, she told me to never give up, and that I'm not alone in
this. She told me to keep trying and if I fail, to try again until I get where I want. Having this talk with her really hit me and actually brought me to tears. I never really had much support from anyone and knowing that I had her support meant the world to me. I rethought everything, and I didn't drop the class. I continued to take that course and give it my all. I attended a few tutoring sessions and practiced writing papers and reading more. I even did some research online to see how I could improve my writing. By the end of the school year, I was receiving 7 and 8 point papers, because anything is possible. I ended the class with a B+ in the class and thanks to a wonderful teacher, I now know, that if at first you don't succeed, you must stand up, and try again.
As many people have told me before, it is a very different ballgame than middle school’s easy going years. There is much more work, the classes are harder, and the environment is completely different. Many people’s grades may slip and they may cower in fear at the barrage of assignments they receive class after class. Unlike other people, I am confident in my ability to excel at all classes and to sustain exemplary grades. Therefore, while many are trembling in fear at the prodigious assignments and work is bombarding them from all angles, I will be at ease, knowing that whatever obstacle is thrown my way, I will conquer it and be its own
English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
My biggest improvement in this English 111 class was my writing. Writing tasks that were assigned greatly strengthened my overall performance throughout the course, preparing me for the future classes. The environment made me feel at ease, helping me evolve as a student, and as a person. The environment made me feel at ease, preparing me for future classes. Another large achievement of mine that I displayed in the class, was my ability to talk comfortably with the other students. The variety of group activities we did allowed me to openly speak my opinion, leading to a better overall performance with my work and papers. The English 111 class enabled me to have better participation in and out of class and allowed
John Steinbeck and Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK Jr.) have both gone down in American literature as some of the most influential authors, but why? Steinbeck was an influential author throughout the 20th century with pieces in many genres. On the flip side is Martin Luther King, Jr., a civil rights leader in the fight against racial discrimination. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the style of these two authors, it is necessary to compare them on the bases of repetition, tone, and purpose.
During my early education, meaning elementary school and middle school, I was a very average student. I gave an average amount of effort to my grades, and I received above average results. This did not bother me, until the end of my 8th-grade year. At this point in the year, I was filling out what classes I desired to take the following year, my freshman year. I realized that from this point forward, I had to take my education much more serious, in order to get accepted to whichever college I desired. therefore, when planning my classes, I decided to challenge myself more than I ever have in the past, and take multiple honors courses. I assumed because of my grades, that I had what it took to be an honors-level student, but I was very wrong. One teacher, Mrs. Johnson, made me realize the kind of effort, time and energy needed to be devoted to my education.
Throughout this semester, I was able to learn many writing skill and was able to develop as a writer. When I found out that I was scheduled to be in English Composition I, I was very nervous as I have always felt that writing was one of the skills that I needed to improve on. Although I usually received good grades on my essays, I did not like writing them since it would always take me more than five hours to write a one page essay. If I wanted a good grade in English Composition I, I knew that I was definitely going to have to improve on my grammars. The main skills that we learned in this class were writing a clear thesis statement, paragraph structures, and sensory details. Through this class, I was able to attain more knowledge in these areas and gain confidence in my writing skills. The areas that I have improved on over the course of the semester are staying in the same tense, using
In high school, my AP English and Economics courses have been the most challenging, yet rewarding. The number of homework, classwork, and critical thinking honed my ability to focus and converted me
"To be successful, you must accept all challenges that come your way. You can't just accept the ones you like" Mike Gafka. Gafka’s quote summarizes my Junior year as I had to grew accustom to many difficulties, face many challenges, and struggles such as time management as well as how I decided to take three Ap classes during my Junior year. Which were Ap US History, Physics, and English not to mention having a Math 140 zero period class and a Network+ computer course outside of school which made me have a busy schedule. Nevertheless I learned and gain a lot of new knowledge throughout my Junior year.
Peter was my student of focus during observations. He is in a first grade class at the St. Eugene School in Yonkers, New York. Although I do not know the implications of Peter’s IEP due to confidentiality, the cooperating teacher did inform that Peter does have an IEP. After observing Peter’s classroom for almost three full days, I attempted to build an understanding of his performance and engagement in specific areas of reading and language arts. I observed Peter’s writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills.
After reviewing Maxwell’s five levels of influence I would classify myself as being in-between the production and people development levels, but I can also see small indications of being in the personhood level.
I’ve come to learn that is really crucial to have a notepad and writing utensil with me at all times. Sometimes I’m asked to do multiple tasks at a time and by writing them down I know I won’t forget information. Also, during my daily meetings, there are crucial dates and other important information that must be written down.
Which caused me to dread reading and writing even more than I already did because of the way she taught. She would use student’s papers for examples and make it clear who’s paper it was without showing the class the name on the paper. She would then proceed to make a mockery of that student saying things that alluded to calling students stupid. I did my best to avoid having to answer any questions from her, but one day she got me.
Since my freshman year I have tried really hard to keep my grades up. I didn't wait till my junior year to try my hardest in my classes like a majority of students do.. I gave it my all and tried being on the principal's honor roll every year. Last year my hard work paid off because I was on the superintendent's honor roll, which was a huge accomplishment for me. I have also prepared for college by taking multiple dual credit classes. Even though dual credit english is kicking my butt, I have learned so much from Mrs. Dale already. Before her class I did not know how properly write an essay, but I know that by the end of the year I will be able to. By taking her class it will prepare for my for my other college classes in the future.
Struggling is inevitable. In any aspect of life, especially during high school and teen years, challenges are constantly introduced. My personal experience with educational difficulty involves certain teaching methods and particular advanced classes. As an individual with the capability of successfully taking on more school work and challenges, I have taken every possible advanced class offered to me by my high school. This undertaking does not come without a fair amount of difficulty, however, none so difficult that I was unable to keep an exceptional grade average. Prior to taking College-level Chemistry, I had excelled in regular Chemistry. However, my high school had employed a new chemistry teacher whom I had hoped would enable me to learn
Sadly, my next school year was my worst ever. I had poor grades in all of my subjects and I did poorly in many subjects, but there was one class I didn’t mind struggling in it because it peaked my interest. English my junior year was my favorite class even if I did not do as well as I wished. I read books that interested me and I wrote essays on things I enjoyed writing about. While writing has never been a strong subject for me, I have always loved writing. I enjoy writing about things that interest me and that I have a passion for. Intro to composition has changed the way I think about writing, it allowed me to write about what I wanted while guiding me to write more intellectual and specific through constant revisions and one on one conferences with my
