This class was not what I expected it to be. When thinking about an Ap class my first thought was lots of boring hard work, difficult material, and advanced testing. Instead, it was more working hard to expand individual abilities, getting more practice, and digging deeper into our skills. The atmosphere of the class was more laid back, free, and open than I had expected and I believe it paved the way for more improvement.I’ve done these self-reflections multiple time during my time in high school, in which case I would normally have pulled them out of my butt and then hoped for the best. However, this class has changed that because I truly have experienced more growth in my work over the course of the year. On February twenty-seventh, I joined a site called “Minds “, which in essence is a social media platform that seconds as a blogging site. I’ve been a member of the site for a few months now and shared more on my account than I ever would have before this year. For example, I shared a personal poem that I had only Previously shared on Instagram for my loved ones to see; called “ A Blur in Time, A passerby”. I have also shared my thoughts and opinion on interior lockdowns, and the issue of school shootings. I’ve also had the pleasure of sharing different forms of art such as, poetry from class, quotes, and other materials that my subscribers post or remind. The fact that I was able to post these things at all was a big risk for me. Especially because of the fact that I had shared a few controversial topics and my personal writing, on a network where I don’t personally know any of my followers and where people don’t feel obliged to respond
I came into this class under the impression that I already wrote well enough and wouldn’t need to improve. However, as I progressed through the semester I learned that there is always room to grow. The first paper I produced was not at the level I was hoping but after I actively decided to improve my writing my papers became much better. Looking back on my work in the class I wonder how much my writing has changed and where I still have room to improve. Without evaluating my work I can’t hope to become any better. Through this class I have grown much as a writer but there is still more I can learn.
AP Seminar was my first experience in an environment that was completely dedicated to learning, without the fixation on the letter grades that ‘determine’ success. My peers were my teachers. I discussed, debated, and collaborated with peers that shared various viewpoints on thought provoking issues that challenged my own. I learned to ask the ‘Whys?,’ ‘Hows?,’ and ‘What Ifs?’ and dive deeper into discussion. The environment fostered differences in interests, mindsets, and intellect. My attraction drew me to seek an intellectually diverse learning environment that challenges my preconceived opinions and ideas. The first day of my junior year I was extremely overwhelmed by this class; all the essays we were required to write in the first week didn't help much either. However, since the beginning of the year I have learned so many useful and important lessons which have guided my learning throughout this first semester and, I'm assuming, will continue to guide me for the rest of my high school experience and beyond. In addition, I have made many goals which pertain to essays I have written, and I believe I have met those goals.
As the semester finally approaches the finish line, I revisit my past work to compare and contrast how this class has developed me into a successful writer at the college level. Throughout the year my writing style has developed and become broader as I have learned how to incorporate more of my personal views as well as reliable, unbiased information. This portfolio is a representation of how many things I have learned along the way while being an English 102 student.
When looking at not just this class but all of my classes and looking at how I have been approaching them versus how I should approach them it definitely puts my mind in a different perspective because I am a person that “strives for excellence” and if I am able to “ace” a class then I definitely try and do that but a lot of the time that doesn’t mean sitting there and actually learning the information it means
I was taking AP World History, my first AP class. Keeping up my grades in the class was one of my biggest concerns, but surprisingly, it turned out to be a relatively laid-back class without much homework. Throughout the year, the class was mainly notes and document analysis. The only difficult part of the class was the tests. They were long and arduous with several vague questions based on specific parts of the curriculum that we had only gone over lightly. The course became more vigorous as the exam date drew closer; we began writing more essays, the tests we took grew longer, there were after school study sessions, and even a mock
I learned from my peers that I am a better writer than I thought I was and that increased my confidence in my writing ability. This didn’t just teach me about myself; I learned how to write several different types of papers. I improved throughout the semester as I learned how to analyze for rhetorical appeals, research an issue, and evaluate a topic. I am glad that I was able to learn a lot from this class, as well as read my peers work. It was intriguing to see how others write and what topic are important to them. Over the course of this class I have pieced together many things about my own life that before went unnoticed. I am now able to see things in a bit of a different light. Now that I have been introduced to the realm of psychology I understand some of the reasons for behavior around me. I have learned that there is a reason for most everything and a lot of our behaviors and mental processes can be explained through psychology. Studies have been conducted for many years to try and pinpoint the source of our behavior and it is not something that most people think about every day. Having a better understanding of why we operate the way we do will help me to better understand myself and the others around me.
It’s no secret that students are supposed to learn, improve, and grow throughout the course of a class. For true improvement to occur, a student must identify that they have made a mistake, learn from the mistake, and correct themselves for the next time. For me, this semester has been an extremely amazing learning experience. No, I did not have a dramatic transformation in my writing. Yet, the things I have learned in this class have been extremely helpful and have stuck with me like glue. When first given this assignment, I thought the same thing that most self-centered teens think. The generic, “I haven’t learned a single thing this semester. I have always been an amazing writer!” This is generally because most people are inherently selfish.
I believe it is important for any student who wants to do their best in a class to take a moment to evaluate their own work to determine the rate their writing is progressing and how they can continue to advance their writing. When I looked through my own work I asked myself “what have I learned this semester?” and “what do I still need to learn in order to improve my writing?”. Answering both these questions will help me with my last step of my self-evaluation, developing a plan to learn new skills.
I took AP Statistics my junior year of high school and I was the only junior in a senior class. At first, I was really shy because I did not know anyone in the class, but after a few weeks, I had made new friends and was enjoying everyone's company. Usually, I am used to excelling in math with minimal effort, it simply came naturally, however anyone who has taken statistics knows it is not like other math class. It was extremely difficult in the beginning and was trying as best I could to understand what we were learning, but it was like nothing I had done before, however, it was the teachers first time teaching AP Statistics so, she was trying to figure things out just like the rest of us in the class. Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work in see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded. Some of the skills I had shocked me as I didn’t think I had those capabilities in me.
Without a doubt the lessons and exercises on time management were the most meaningful to me. They brought insight into why I seemed to be constantly working yet still never really got anything I wanted to accomplish throughout the day finished. I realized the majority of the activities I had been spending the most time on didn’t reflect my values of hard work and self discipline and long term academic goals to be successful in college. This motivated to completely change the way I managed my time by effectively striking a balance between my maintenance, committed, and free time.
Writing a reflection and a summary of dozens of experiences is very challenging and demanding. I cannot count how many ups I had, yet I cannot deny the fact that I had some downs where I could transform them to ups. The year was full of challenges, excitement, fear and lessons. Each Wednesday I had mixed emotions. Every time I came to school I had the same fear and heartbreaks. In my reflection I am willing to compare between Adan at the beginning of the year and new Adan I became.
Overall my experience of being in Lingleville ISD was a great experience that allowed me to learn a lot not only about the students in the classroom, but also helped me learn a lot about myself. Going in to this classroom I expected to only learn things about classroom management and maybe a few strategies. After spending a few days in this room I learned many other things. I did learn about classroom management but I also learned about content, strategies, organization, lesson planning, and inclusion adaptations. I learned that an inclusion special education student can really thrive being in a mainstream classroom, not only academically but also socially. It was a wonderful learning opportunity to get to be a part of that. My mentor teacher
