When love is fair and unfair
Love is when another person’s happiness is more important than your own, when you are willing to risk your safety and life for that person even though they may not give you their love. The Great Gatsby shows how love can be unfair and dishonest. Anyone Lived in a Pretty How Town” shows how love can be honest and fair. Both selections show how love can either be honest or not taken seriously. F.Scott Fitzgerald, author of The Great Gatsby and E.e. Cummings, author of Anyone Lived in a Pretty How Town” convey a similar theme of love through the use of tone, imagery, and symbolism.

“Noone loved him more by more” she loves her husband even more as time passes by. “Someones married their everyone’s” everyone had someone who they love and loves them back. “ She laughed his joy and cried his grief” she is always there for him. “Noone stooped to kiss his face” she went down with him, because in true love everything that happens to your loved one affects you in every way. The Great Gatsby uses words like “rush of emotion,” determinedly,” and “cool” to express love. “His hand took hold of hers, and she said something low in his ear he turned toward her with a rush of emotion.” This shows the effect Daisy has on him even after five years. “‘I wouldn’t ask too much of her’ I ventured. ‘You can’t repeat the past?’ he cried incredulously. ‘Why of course you can!’ ‘I’m going to fix everything just the way it was before,’ he said nodding determinedly. ‘She’ll see.’”(Gatsby 110) He is determined to get her back because he thinks that she is still in love with him. “You look so cool,”(Gatsby ) shows how Gatsby stood out to Daisy. He was the opposite to everything else around her and wanted him to know that.

Courtly love is a fundamental metaphor of Fitzgerald’s, The Great Gatsby, and, therefore, the elusive Jay Gatsby plays out his role as a courtly lover throughout the novel. Gatsby’s abnormal situation with Daisy reflects the metaphor of courtly love. Many of the characteristics used to define courtly love are reflected in Gatsby’s actions. Every choice that he makes is an attempt to win Daisy’s love, however unworthy of it she proves to be. He and Daisy’s relationship reflects the way that knights had to prove that they were cultivated to win a woman, as well as abiding to the adulterous aspect of courtly love, and being an example of the many times the “white knight” dies for their love.
Gatsby’s dream is to be with Daisy, and since he has accumulated a lot of money, he had his mind set on getting her back. Throughout the novel, Gatsby shows his need to attain The American Dream of love and shows his determination to achieve it. You can tell that Gatsby has a clear vision of what he wants when Nick says, “..he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward-and distinguished nothing except a single green light” (20-21). This green light represents Daisy and being able to have her would be completing Gatsby’s American dream but the light is so far away that it indicates that he could never have

Nothing is more important, to most people, than friendships and family, thus, by breaking those bonds, it draws an emotional response from the readers. Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan had a relationship before he went off to fight in the war. When he returned home, he finds her with Tom Buchanan, which seems to make him jealous since he still has feelings for Daisy. He wanted Daisy “to go to Tom and say: ‘I never loved you” (Fitzgerald 118) Gatsby eventually tells Tom that his “wife doesn’t love [him]” and that she only loves Gatsby (Fitzgerald 121). But the unpleasant truth is that Daisy never loved anyone, but she loved something: money. Daisy “wanted her life shaped and the decision made by some force of of money, of unquestionable practicality” (Fitzgerald 161). The Roaring Twenties were a time where economic growth swept the nation and Daisy was looking to capitalize on that opportunity. Never before have I seen or have other characters told stories of Gatsby showing such feelings, towards anyone or anything. He had always seemed to me just a man who thought nothing personal for the people around him. He had money and he wanted to show it off, or at least that is what was portrayed to me. It was surprising to me to see him feel nervous and worried about what Daisy thought about him.

The novel, The Great Gatsby, is a tragic story of lost love. Gatsby and Daisy are two different people in two different worlds. In their time apart, Gatsby was seeking for the American dream while Daisy was enjoying her riches with Tom. Gatsby is one of a few men who possess the knowledge of the true meaning of love. Love is so powerful and beautiful that Gatsby would do anything and everything to make Daisy his wife. However, love is also a mysterious thing that can turn anything from an everlasting relationship to murder. It turns out that Gatsby, a man with the possession of true love, is the one that suffers the most. Gatsby and Daisy, both represent love in their own unique way. Love could be beautiful but also cruel as the same time.

The green light symbolize the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy. It’s Gatsby dream, hope, and desire to reunite with Daisy. He tries everything in his power to see Daisy. What he mainly does is throw parties to see if Daisy would show up and when she doesn’t, he goes in his backyard to see the green light which is where Daisy and her husband Tom lives at every time. When Gatsby started talking to Daisy it was like he was a brand person. He tried everything in his power to make Daisy to go back with him. That was in the beginning of the story, with that to describe the green light in this situation with Gatsby it was like a rebirth for him and the start of a new life.

This meaning is conveyed by a complex metaphor; broken down, this metaphor slides away to reveal the true social commentary behind it. This poem is an allegory; the speaker uses pronouns with unclear antecedents to mask the true meaning and add poetic flair to the simple belief he or she presents.
Of course, we cannot deny that Gatsby has achieved a great deal in his lifetime, all, apparently, in the name of love. Indeed the narrator of the story, Nick Carraway, describes Gatsby as having “an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person”, and this forms the basis of his opening argument for the greatness of Gatsby. We must, however, examine the reliability of the narrator. Nick says himself that he is “inclined to reserve all judgement”, but then quickly goes on to say how “it has a limit”, that he cannot reserve judgement on everyone, and also that Gatsby was “exempt from my reaction”, following this with how Gatsby “represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn”,...
When people hear the words “romantic hero,” they imagine one of those fake characters from cheesy love stories, holding roses while kneeling below the heroine`s balcony. Gatsby is no better than those fake and desperate heroes because his love is untrue and obsessive. James Gatz, who is also known as Jay Gatsby, is a poor young man who acquires wealth for the purpose of gaining the love of a rich girl named Daisy. Gatsby lives and breathes for Daisy, the “nice” girl he loves, even though she is married to Tom Buchanan. Gatsby`s love may sound dedicated, but it is more obsessive because he lives in his dreams and will literally do anything to win Daisy`s heart. In Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby, Gatsby is not portrayed as being a romantic hero due to his attempts in trying to be someone he is not by faking his identity, by his selfish acts in desperation for Daisy`s love, and his fixation with wealth, proving that love is not the same as obsession.
Gatsby’s love life has become surrounded by ideas from the past. No longer is he able to fall in love with the moment, but instead he is held up on what have and should have been. He spends his time reminiscing on old times and previous relationships while he has also been building up a new life in order to return to the past. The unreal expectations he has for Daisy prove to us that he has trouble letting go of his old romantic ideas. Gatsby doesn’t want to accept and love this new Daisy, and instead he is hoping for the Daisy he knows to come back. But people change and there can be no expectations for someone to continue to remain the same after a number of years. Instead we must let go of the past and embrace the future for everything it could be.
Love has a crippling effect on every character in this novel, especially J. Gatsby. Love can indeed be a good thing at times. But F. Scott Fitzgerald shows us that love can sometimes do more harm than good. Love can complete your life, or, love can destroy it.
