When you hear the term “phobia,” most people think of spiders or clowns. No one considers phobias and disorders that aren’t socially common. One example of this is Agoraphobia, especially considering the idea of society. Agoraphobia is generally defined as an anxiety disorder related to fear in uncomfortable, usually social, situations where it may be hard to escape.
Seeing that Agoraphobia is presented as an anxiety disorder, it can be included in the research and studies to see if anxiety disorders have any connection to genetics. Studies show that anxiety in itself can be genetic, including a child’s more likelihood to develop a disorder if a parent had one themselves. Anxiety is predominantly overlooked because it’s something everyone deals with now and again. However, dealing with an anxiety disorder is far more difficult and more complicated than those who are uneducated in this subject might think. With Agoraphobia, a misconception is that it is the counterpart of claustrophobia, or the irrational fear of restricted or limited space. While it is true that some diagnosed with agoraphobia may fear large and/or open spaces, there is more to it. Some more opinions include people being hermits, extremely introverted, or just not wanting to leave the house. These opinions and misconceptions can negatively impact those who are agoraphobic and their families. The effect the disorder has on their lives varies between individuals but it usually causes the person the hide or straw away from some or most public events or occasions, some may even avoid all public confrontation. These changes in behavior can cause disconnections with family in a range of ways. For example, someone who commonly plays poker with his cousins on saturdays might skip a week, and then the next week, and then just not attend at all. Even more so, that individual might not attend other family gatherings like holidays, weddings, and even funerals. Anyone close to the person might begin to conclude that they no longer like them or wish to be acquaintances, which might cause tension and
