The theatre theorist I have chosen as the foundation for my solo theatre piece is Antonin Artaud. After viewing a short video of Artaud’s theory in action I was instantly attracted to his ideas regarding theatre and thus decided to explore his work further in depth. Artaud had “expressed disdain for Western theater of the day, panning the ordered plot and scripted language his contemporaries typically employed to convey ideas.” I found his work terrifying in a way but it was also very refreshing to see theatre that swayed away from speech and instead used other aspects to bring about meaning and purpose in a dramatic work. Born in Marseille, France, on September 4, 1896, Artaud worked as an actor also participating in the Surrealist Movement in Paris as a writer. This was a cultural movement that began in the early 1920s, and it is best known for its visual artworks and writings. Here he constructed the idea of a Theatre of Cruelty. Although Artaud eventually parted ways with the ideas of surrealism, this movement helped to shape his later theories on the Theatre of Cruelty. I found that through this I would be able to gain a certain reaction from the audience, a feeling of discomfort that would echo on later as an incredibly eerie idea. Aiding in the development of concentrated professions such as scenic design has been a plethora of talented, skillful, intelligent and highly driven individuals. Among these influential fountains of creativity have been John Lee Beatty, Eugene Lee, Boris Aronson, Ming Cho Lee, Jo Mielziner, Tony Walton, Robin Wager, John Napier, Santo Loquasto, Heidi Landesman, and Julie Taymor along with many more.
In each and every culture theater exists. However, they are not always portrayed in the same way and could take up many different forms. What differ them from others is influenced by the convention of what governs them. What happen on stage depends on the conventions of the theater. Convention is define as “Rules governing a given style of theater, such as fourth-wall verisimilitude or bare stage. These rule should not be violated, but often are, as when actors “break” the fourth wall by delivering a line directly toward the audience” (Altshuler and Janaro 208). The condition governing the staging and performance are known as theatrical conventions, in which what the audiences agree to accept as what is real (Altshuler and Janaro 173). In comparing an Elizabethan and a modern theater to each other there are many differences and similarities between the two. As an audience we are manipulated from the moment a film begins. In this essay I wish to explore how The Conversation’s use of sound design has directly controlled our perceptions and emotional responses as well as how it can change the meaning of the image. I would also like to discover how the soundtrack guides the audience’s attention with the use of diegetic and nondiegetic sounds.

Martin Esslin, an established drama director, scholar, and critic, approaches his analysis of drama by drawing on his practical experience as a director of plays. Esslin implicitly assumes that drama is the most elite of the artistic genres when he directly declares the purpose of his book, which is to answer the question "why should those concerned with art resort to drama rather than any other form of communication?" Esslin then immediately poses another question that he seems to take as a prerequisite for the first question: "What is the underlying, basic nature of dramatic form and what is it that drama can express better than any other form of communication?"

I’ve learned to appreciate the beauty of how theater is more than a mere performance, but rather an artform with nuance and depth. My knowledge on theatrical styles has expanded and some of my favorites we have studied in class are Brechtian and Chinese theatre styles. I grew up participating in musical theatre, but never had the opportunity to truly learn the history and details of the craft. After studying RENT, I am inspired by the various possibilities for theater beyond acting, singing, and dancing. Theater can be used for activism or as a form of commemoration. Theater is relevant by communicating issues to the world. Theater is so much more than a dramatic presentation. Utilitarianism is “a normative ethical theory that places the locus of right and wrong solely on the outcomes (consequences) of choosing one action/policy over other actions/policies.” (Utilitarian, 2017) which essentially means that this looks past one’s own personal interests and toward the interests of others. Bentham also had his own “Principle of Utility” which focuses on the role of pain and pleasure in human life, approves or disapproves of an action depending on the negative or positive outcome and the amount of pain or pleasure, generally speaking this means the consequences of one’s actions, making pain equal to negative or evil actions or consequences, and pleasure

The name most associated with excellence in theatre is William Shakespeare. His plays, more than any other playwright, resonate through the ages. It may be safe to say that he has influenced more actors, directors, and playwrights than any thespian in the history of the stage. But what were his influences? During the Middle Ages theatre was dominated by morality, miracle, and mystery plays that were often staged by the church as a means to teach the illiterate masses about Christianity. It wasn’t until the early sixteenth century that Greek tragedy experienced a revival, in turn, inspiring a generation of renaissance playwrights.
Theatre as we know it now was born more than two thousand years ago and has gone through many streams until it reached the current modernity. Among these streams is the avant-garde theatre. This theatre achieved a break in the traditional theatre and became the forefront of a new experimental theatre. Therefore it is necessary to ask how this theatre started, what impact it had on society and if this type of theatre is still common in our modern era.
