There is no better observation of human behavior combining both comedy and tragedy than a person of winning (or almost winning) a lottery. Money gained by chance does not seem to mesh well with human nature. In Chekov’s The Lottery Ticket the situation with Ivan and his wife is no exception.
There is elation that part of the number is correct. While high on that emotion both Ivan and ____________ describe their dreams of the future this money will enable; however, both realize that their dreams might not the same. Ivan even believes his wife is too unattractive to enjoy the money and that he can do better because he still has his looks. Then we see suspicion and resentment over things that “might” happen.
